3. A mushroom by any other name is still tasty
It's a freak of some sort: Leslie Bliss
Stanstead (NA) - "I've never seen anything like this before," said Leslie Bliss of his nine-pound giant mushroom. The local Stanstead farmer was moving his cattle from the field at feeding time on Monday when he spied what he thought to be a balloon resting on a nearby pile of deadwood. "I walked over and gave it a kick and it rolled down the cliff," Bliss said. He decided to walk away. But unable to put it out of his mind, Bliss returned two days later, picked up the freak of nature and took it home to show his wife. "I thought maybe it would weigh four pounds but I put it on the scale - nine-pounds strong," said Bliss who doesn't know quite what to make of his find. "It's a freak of some sort." There is some arguement as to what kind of mushroom it is. According to Dave Lepitre's mushroom book, it has all the characteristics of a puffball. There is a hollow sound when tapped and it measures 17 inches wide, 11 inches high and 13-and-a quarter inches across. A mushroom guide claims giant puffballs can measure 20 inches in diameter or more. The book also recommended the fungi for its flavor. Any takers? [with photo] (Stanstead Journal, Sep. 3, 1997)
