2. Obit: Our beloved Craig Lee Mathieson went to his heavenly home Tuesday, December 11, 2012 surrounded by those he loved. He received his reward after bravely and cheerfully battling a rare brain tumor. He leaves behind his best friend and precious loving wife of 10 years, Reeva. His most treasured accomplishments, his two children Shayla (25), and Tyler (21), his grandson CJ (4), his son/nephew Richard (Pete, 19). Craig also leaves behind his much loved younger sister Kerry and family, as well as his devoted friend and care taker Chris Laughlin. Craig was born November 28, 1960 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Richard (Dick) and Ellen Mathieson (Stadel). He grew up in Rapid City and graduated from Steven's High School in 1979. He was confirmed at South Canyon Lutheran church as a teenager and continued to grow in his faith at Calvary Lutheran church. His special union with Donna Mathieson (Filholm) blessed him with his daughter and son. During his employment at what is now the Americas Best Value Inn, Craig met the woman who would become his best friend and devoted wife, Reeva (St. Peter). They were joined in matrimony on August 16th, 2002 and they continue to share a special relationship that extends beyond the concept of time. Craig had a lifelong love for football. He coached football at New Underwood, and followed in his families footsteps with a lifelong passion for the Nebraska Cornhusker's Football team. "GO BIG RED!" But, he was generous with himself and didn't limit his interests; he shared them with basketball, baseball, golf, and NASCAR. He will always be remembered for one of his most endearing qualities; he always made you laugh. Whether you fully understood the joke or not, he made you laugh, "BigBig BearBig Bear chase me!" Nearly everyone who met him has a story about how he brightened a gloomy day with a quirky story or just by sharing his cheery presence. The way he lived is summed up nearly perfectly by Red Skelton: "If by chance some day you are not feeling well and you should remember some silly thing I've said or done and it brings back a smile to your face or a chuckle to your heart then my purpose as your clown has been fulfilled." Craig and his family would like to extend a special thank you to Steve and Sheryl Plutt, McKie Automotive - Auto Depot his generous employer for nine years, Dr. Douglas Traub, Aunt Ella Keifert, Eric and Terri Seljeskog (owners of Americas Best Value Inn), Donna Gratzfeld and Randy Huber (formally of Americas Best Value Inn), Jessica Foster, Kym Hop, Richard St. Peter, Chris Laughlin, and so many others with their love and support. The services for the celebration of his Eternal Life will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Sheridan Lake Road on Friday, December 14th, 2012 at 10 am, officiated by Rev. Dr. Patrick Keifert and Rev. Dwight Stensgaard with a luncheon to immediately follow at the church. Cremation is being handled by Kirk's Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his father Dick and mother Ellen Mathieson, his grandparents, David and Mabel Mathieson, J.J. and Katherine Stadel, and his chosen grandfather Jack Cannon. He continues to be loved by his precious wife Reeva, Rapid City, SD; his loving children Shayla Mathieson and Tyler Mathieson, his grandson CJ, Rapid City, SD; his son/nephew Richard St. Peter, Rapid City, SD; his sister Kerry and her husband Jim Crilly, his nephews Collin and Joe, Norfolk, NE; his chosen grandmother Ruth Cannon, Rapid City, SD; his sister by marriage Sonja St. Peter, Rapid City, SD; his sister and brother by marriage Leesa (St. Peter) and Edward Kumley and his brood of nieces and nephews, Rapid City, SD; his best friend Lonnie Steggs, Lincoln, NE; his devoted friend Chris Laughlin, Rapid City, SD; other family and friends too numerous to list, and last but not least, his many hats, watches, pens and other accessories. He lived in many places around the world but spent the better part of the end of his long career of 42 years at K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He retired after he helped close the base and was Fire Chief in the end but played many rolls before that, some included Veteran Firefighter, Fire Inspector, Arson Instructor as well as an Arson Inspector.
