Much sympathy is expressed for the widow and family of the late Hollis Morrison, whose death has already been reported. 1. Daughter of Alvah Drew Tyler and Mary Jane Walker.
- ALVIN DREW TYLER; At the advanced age of 92 years, Mr. Drew Tyler of North Hatley passed to his well merited rest on January 11, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jennie Morrison. The family of Mr. Tyler's father came to Canada from the United States when there was but one log hut on Stanstead Plain. The difficulties of the journey may be imagined from the fact that the cow which the Tyler family were trying to bring with them, was on the way, devored by wolves. The Tyler family settled in the primeval woods about where the Russell Bowen farm is located and there Alva was born June 25, 1830. On reaching manhood Mr. Tyler married Miss Jane Walker, and ten daughters and one son were the result of this union, the son and one daughter dying in infancy. The late Mr. Tyler is survived by his wife, nine daughters, 31 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren. The daughters are Mesdames Jennie Morrison, Alger Drew and Albert Pope of Barnston, Mrs. Elmer McClary of Massawippi, Mrs. Chester McClary of Lyndonville, Vt., Mrs. Leon Allen of Lennoxville, Mesdames Wright Sampson and Mamie Trusell of North Hatley, and Mrs. Leslie Drew of East Angus. (Stanstead Joutnal, Feb. 3, 1922, p. 3)- The funeral of Mrs. Jane Tyler was held in the Baptist Church on Saturday, Juno 5th, and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Rev. I. K. Tyler spoke very fittingly of the long life of the deceased. The late Mrs. Tyler was the mother of nine daughters, all of whom survive her. (June 1926)

Alice Irene Morrison passed peacefully away on Thursday morning September 13th, 1917, at the age of twenty-eight years. For several months prior to her death, Miss Morrison had been in poor health, at the home of her mother, Mrs. Hollis Morrison. During this time, she was tenderly cared for by her mother, and her every desire and wish was anticipated by the loving thoughtfullness of mother, brother and sisters. The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at the late home of the deceased and was conducted by the Rev. Hunter of Coattcook. Beautiful solos most beautiful of which was "Let her Rest" were rendered by Miss Converse, soloist of the Barnston Methodist Church and the hymns sung by the choir were Alice’s favourites in her lifetime and were chosen for the occasion by her sister Jessie, who listened to them as she lay on her sick bed upstairs. The floral tributes were numerous and lovely and testified to the place which Alice occupied in the heart of her many friends and relatives. The mortal remains of the deceased were laid to rest in the little cemetery on the hill. Pathetic in the extreme, was the "Passing Over" of Jessie Blanche Morrison Moore, aged twenty-four, Tuesday night. September 18, 1917, at the home of her mother, Mrs. Hollis Morrison, Barnston Que. Mrs. Moore, against the advice of her phyician in Montreal, had come to Barnston, Monday the tenth to be with her sister Alice at the last moment. In her perilous condition of health, she contracted a chill and double pneumonia followed. Everything that could be done to save her was done but the efforts of an experienced physician and a trained nurse were unavailing and Jessie passed after Alice. A large concourse of friends and relatives for a second time gathered at Mrs. Morrison's home, Thursday September twentieth, to mingle their tears with those of the bereaved family and show in so far as they could their sorrow and sympathy. Relatives were present from Montreal, Lyndonville, Vt., East Angus, Lennoxville, Cannan, Vt., Massawippi and Coaticook, seven of Mrs. Morrison’s sisters being present at each of the two funerals. The service, which was conducted by Rev. Mr. Frye of the Baptist Church, Coaticook was indeed touching in its pathos. It is indeed a gift to be able to utter such comforting words and at the same time to deliver to an audience so powerful a message of warning as fell from Mr. Frye’s lips that day. Miss Converse sang words of sweet comfort in the lovely solos which she rendered and was assisted by the choir of the Methodist Church. What was mortal of Jessie was laid beside the sister whom she had loved so dearly and from whom she was separated for so short a time. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mr. Moore, little Ruby and Roy, and to the Morrison family, in their double bereavement. 25. Obit:
It was with a feeling of profound regret that the community learned of the death of Chester A. Morrison which occurred at his home at Mid-night Wednesday Sept. 10th. Say a Manitou Springs Journal, Colorado. For the past three years Mr. Morrison has been an invalid struggling with a quiet patience peculiarly his own, an incurable disease. Last winter he spent the winter in California accompanied by his wife, hoping for benefit from the climate change, but his improvement was but temporary. He has failed steadily all summer and while his friends had given up hope of his recovery, the end came as a shock.
Mr. Morrison was born in Canada fifty-five years ago next December, and has lived in Manitou for the past sixteen years. Quiet and unobstructive as to disposition he soon won and has retained the respect and regards of the community. He served two terms as town councilman and has repeatedly refused re-nomination, and the people recognized in him one who could be depended on to take an honorable stand on all questions.
A wife and married daughter, who live in Canada, are all the surviving family. The Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Herbert W. Lathe, the burial at Crystal Valley being in charge of the odd fellows. (Stanstead Journal, September 25, 1902)

With the passing of Andrew J. Holmes at his home in Canaan village, last Saturday evening, a shadow was cast overt the entire north country. It was shortly after seven o'clock when the sad news was breathed among the many anxious friends that the end had come, death caused by
embolism. Mr. Holmes, who had been critically ill for several weeks, was apparently
recuperating. His condition was very much improved and, it was thought, that he was well on the road to recovery. In fact, he was up and about the house earlier in the day Saturday. The funeral was held from the home Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended by relatives and friends.
Rev. George C. McDonald, pastor of Grace Methodist church, Canaan, spoke comforting words to the sorrowing ones. The flowers were many and beautitul and silently expressed the love and
esteem in which the deceased was held. The bearers were Fred Carlton, George B. Currier, Archie I. Farnham and John P. Locke. Interment was in Alice Hunt cemetery. John H. Hinley was in charge. Andrew J. Holmes was born in Hereford on January 14, 1869, the son of Charles S. and Emily (Hodge) Holmes. When he was about twelve years of age his parents moved to
Pittsburg, where he resided until about seventeen years ago, when he bought the farm which was the home until his death. The farm, which can truthfully be called one of the best in the north country, was built up by the untiring efforts of the deceased man, who was a splendid neighbor, always bringing cheer to those in trouble and ever being on the alert to assist anyone in need. On December 10, 1892, he was united im marpiage to ida Woodard,

CANAAN, July 7. -- F. G. Beecher, father of Mrs. Homer Campbell, Waterbury, died today. He was 83 on June 1 and had spent the greater part of his life in Canaan farming and dealing in cattle. He retired from active work a year ago when his health began to fail, and spent the past winter in Waterbury with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Campbell. Besides Mrs. Campbell he is survived by one son and three grandchildren, Robert and Richard Campbell of Waterbury and Sgt. Richard Beecher. The funeral will be held at his late home Friday at 2 p. m. (The Burlington Free Press, July 8, 1943, p. 11)6. Obit: FRANCIS G. BEECHER
Early Wednesday morning, July 7, 1943, another of Canaan’s eldest residents, Francis G. Beecher, passed into the Great Beyond. Born June 1, 1860, in Hereford, Que., and having lived his entire life in the nearby towns, he was well known in the surrounding communities. In 1893 he moved from his native town to Pittsburg, N. H. Later he moved to Beecher Fails, Vt., then
went to West Stewartstown, N. H. His remaining years were spent in Canaan, Vt. His was the life of a farmer. He was a man of the old stock, physically strong, energetic and ambitious.
Several years of declining health passed without murmur, and his indomitable will power enabled
him to be around until within a few days of his passing. The major part of the winter was spent with his daughter. During the latter part of April he became very eager to return to his own home where his son and he spent the last weeks together. On Sunday, July 4th, his condition became so critical that he was removed to the hospital in West Stewartstown, N. H., and the daughter
was summoned the following night. Arriving a few hours later, she was a constant attendant at his bedside. He had often expressed the wish during his ater life that he might finish his sojourn here and be with those who had gone on before and awaited his coming. Many needy people have been generously remembered in the past by Mr. Beecher and before the passing of his wife, eight years ago, many shaded the hospitality of their home and none were more welcome than the aged and infirm. He claimed membership in no church, but was a follower of the Adventist faith. A long life of 83 years has closed and he will be missed on the streets and around the town. He married Rose D. Swain and to them four children were bom, two dying in infancy. The daughter, Mrs. Homer P. Campbell, lives in Waterbury, Vt., and his son, Perley, is a resident of Canaan, Vt. The funeral at his home was conducted by Holman Finley. Miss Albee was the speaker. Bearers were William Gould, Edward Haynes, Morton Haynes and Len Carey. Many beautiful flowers were brought in by friends and neighbors and he was laid to rest in the Alice Hunt cemetery. (The News and Sentinel, July 15, 1943, p. 2)

Boston, Mass
Dec 29, 1896To Mr and Mrs Wheeler,
You will no doubt be a little surprised to get a letter from me but I have something to tell
you that is of great importance to me also ask your consent to that which is very dear
to me and it is this I have for a long time thought very much of your daughter Ella and it
has come to live of the kind which will last as long as I live and I believe it is returned and
I have her answer that makes me very happy now I ask your consent to an engagement
with her and a wedding in the near future. Yo may think me rather bold but it is what my
whole life depends on I have been with her at Charlie's and it understands it and I have his
full consent. I will admit that my circumstances are not what I would wish but with her love
to help me I can or will try my whole life to make her happy and by doing that I will be so to.
I know you will be lonesome without her but I would not wish you to think you have lost her
for I would not do anything to make you think so and i will with god's help be what a true
husband ought to be. Hoping to hear from you either by letter or by way of Ella in the near
future I am ever yours with best wishes for a happy new year to all. from your friend and
hoping for something nearer.
Yours truly

Mrs. John M. Randall died very suddenly at her home on the Joe's brook road last Saturday afternoon. She had been sick for a number of months with a throat difficulty which developed into a cancer, and it was not expected that she could recover, but her death came as a shock both to her family and to the community. In her death the church loses one of its most ardent and devoted supporters. Always ready to do her part, she was loved and honored by all the church as well as by all who knew her. Many years ago a beloved daughter was taken, which brought a sadness into her life which time has never fully effaced; but this bereavement only tended to strengthen her faith in her Heavenly Father, and her life has benn full of good works. The funeral services were held in the church Tuesday at 1 p.m., Rev. Mr. Meacham officiating. (The Caledonian, Dec. 27, 1899, p. 5)

No. 143. Town of Barnet vs. John F. Adams and others. Debt on bond given by deft. Adams as principal and several other as sureties, for support od a bastard child, alleged to have been begotten by said Adams upon the body of Elizabeth Mason. It turned out that the bond was given some six months before any child was born. Defence that the bond was signed by said Adams while under duress, and through fraud. There was some quite interesting testimony as to the part of the town officers took in procuring this bond, and indicated that there is some sharp men yet left in Caledonia County. Adams swore he wanted to send for and see counsel but his request was not granted. Court submitted the question to jury whether the bond was the bond of Adams, and if it was how much damage had plfs. sustained. Verdict that instrument is bond of John F. Adams, but is not bond of the other defts. Belden & Ide for plfs. Smith and Lamson for defts.

Betty Adams Died From Injuries When the "Neilson House" Was Burned -- Horses Burned.
Mrs. Betty Adams, a woman over 70 years old, received injuries from which she died within 24 hours in a fire last Friday morning that destroyed the Neilson House" and barn and burned seven horses and eight hogs. The inmates of the hotel barely escaped with their lives and two families living in the tenements in the house saved a part of their furniture. James Hall, who entered the burning building to rescue the baby of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Bandy, nearly succumbed to heart failure but is recovering. The fire was discovered in the shed between the house and barn about 5.30 in the morning by Mrs. Minnie Campbell who had arisen to test the telephone lines. She gave the alarm by telephone and the inmates were awakened in time to escape with what clothing they could carry in their hands. Mrs. Adams was found at the foot of the stairs, unconscious from blows on her head, hip, one side and broken arm and crushed wrist. She was carried to a near-by house but never regained consciousness and died at two o'clock the next morning. George Walker, who owned the house was quite badly burned about the feet, neck and hands. Seven horses, six belonging to Mr. Walker and one to Maurice Cohen, and eight hogs were burned in the barn. One horse with its blanket on fire jumped through a window on the back side or the barn and was saved although badly burned. Mr. Walker saved his automobile but it was quite badly blistered by the heat. Besides losing his horse, Mr. Cohen lost $325 cash and his clothing. Ed. Champany lost his money and Gertrude Champany lost money and clothing.
