1. SUNSET HOME LOSES ANOTHER LOVED MEMBER
Miss Mary Moore Joined Family in 1918 - Funeral Today
Sunset Home has lost one of its well-loved members in passing Thursday night of Miss Mary Moore at the age of 73. Seldom does one see so conscientious and unselfish a character as was hers. Her whole life was devoted to service for others with never a thought of self. This spirit was shown up to the last day of her long illness in her constant thoughtfulness for those around her. There wa indornitable strength of spirit in the frail body and her strong religious faith never wavered or grew dim. Loved and cherished by all at Sunset Home she was cared for with loving tenderness by the matron Miss McAllister through the long period of growing weakness. Mary Amelia Moore was bom Barnet, Feb 5, 1851, the daughter of William and Mary Gilfillan Moore. She came to St Johnsbury as a child and the remainder of her life was passed here. Her mother died in 1876 and from then until her father's death in 1896 she devoted her life to him, caring for him with unstinted devotion. A brother and sister died many years ago, leaving her with no near relatives. Only two cousins, H. F. Moore and Harry Moore of St. Johnsbury survive. Miss Moore entered Sunset Home in 1918 and there as elsewhere she continued her life of devotion to others. Her busy fingers accomplished much for the Red Cross and for other organizations. A devoted member of the South Congregational Church and of the Home and Foreign Missionary Societies, Miss Moore brought to these organizations a fine spirit of helpfulness and inspiration. She was also a valued member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. All who had been associated in any way with her modest, simple life, will miss her. The funeral this afternoon at two o'clock at Sunset Home was in charge of her pastor, the Rev. Ambrose C. DeLapp of the South Church. (The Caledonian Record, Mar 29, 1924, p. 1)

Coaticook, June 18--(Special) Olive Morrison, wife of the late Charles A. Sutton, of Barnston, died on June 11 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Parker, Coaticook, after an illness of ten days. She had failed in health for years past, but death resulted from shock, slight at first, which was followed by another six days later, after which she never regained consciousness.
She was the daughter of the late Caleb Morrison and Abigail Horner, his wife, of Lowell, Mass., later of Barnston. Born in Lowell, she came to Canada when a child and lived in Barnston until the death of her husband in 1903, after which she made her home with her daughter. Early in life she united with the Barnston Baptist Church, of which she remained a member. She sang the alto in the choir of that church from the age of fourteen on through many years, and her kindness and helpful sympathy were extended to all who needed her. Especially she loved purity and truthfulness. Always she served her dear ones faithfully and lovingly and was rewarded by the deep affection of husband, children and friends.
The funeral was held at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Parker, on Thursday. A large number gathered to pay their last tribute of respect and love. The service as conducted by Rev. Ellis Fray, who spoke from the text, "I shall be satisfied when I awake in Thy likeness." The hymns sung were; "Nearer my home," "The home call," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Saved by Grace". Among the lovely floral offerings were a wreath of roses from her children, heart of pansies, spray of roses, carnations, wreath of tea roses, peonies, sweet peas, forget-me-nots and others. They seemed to testify mutely to a fragrant life, a reverent trust in God, and a very tender heart.
Those present from out of town were her eldest son Edward C. Sutton of Providence R.I., her second son Stanley, of Cookshire, a brother, Mr. George Morrison of Newport, VT., also many relatives from Barnston and Hatley. The youngest son, Earl, has for two years past served his country in France and England. (Sherbrooke Daily Record, June 18, 1918, p. 3)

6. GOLDEN WEDDING.
Opera Hall, Island Pond, has seen many large gatherings, but it certainly never presented a more animated appearance than it did last Monday afternoon and evening, the occasion being a golden wedding reception to our citizens Mr. and Mrs. Clark H. Ladd. Surrounded by their eleven children, the worthy couple were seated under an evergreen arch from the centre of which hung a golden bell, its tongue furnishing electric light, and from 4 o'clock until 8 o'clock a continual stream of townspeople paid their respects and tendered their congratulations, Burnham & Barney's Orchestra discoursing delightful music. Dainty refreshments were served by four young ladies, the refreshment table, extending the whole length of the hall, presenting a nice appearance. During the afternoon photographer O. T. Davis was culled in and took a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Ladd and all the relatives assembled. A golden wedding anniversary is a rare occasion, but when husband and wife are surrounded by a large family of children, death never having invaded their home during all these years, then such an occasion becomes remarkable. Eleven children have been born to this couple, as follows: Amelia S., married Wm. E. Sheafe, residence Boston. Seth W., married Lizzie A. Winslow, residence Baker City, Oregon. Jennie M., unmarried, residence Island Pond. Ella E., married Charles A. Sterling, residence Vanceboro, Me. Martha J. married Almon Smith Jr. residence Island Pond. Lizzie C, married Frank T. Dunham, residence Island Pond. Flora B. married Frank W. Bigelow, residence Chelsea, Mass. Abbie L., married Dana P. Morrill, residence Groveton, N. H. John F., married Mary A. McKinley, residence Island Pond. Nettie G., married Albert E. Stevens, residence Lyndonville. Luther H., unmarried, residence Gorham, N. H. Including the families of such of the married children above mentioned, other relatives present were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sheafe, John C. L. Sheafe, Chas. W. Sheafe, Louie S. Sheafe, Alfonso J. Sheafe, Alonzo M. Sheafe, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bryan. Chas. A. Sterling, Frank W. Bigelow, W. J. Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Fogarty, Edwin N. Sterling. Dana P. Morrill. Albert E. Stevens, Cecil E. Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Mason, Mr. and Mrs. John Randall and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Randall. Mr. and Mrs. Ladd were the recipients of many elegant gifts, prominent among which were eleven ten dollar gold pieces from the children, $107.50 in gold from Island Pond friends, $50 in gold from Frank H. Mason and wife, and several other gold coins from other friends, a parlor lamp, onyx table, 50 yellow roses, gold picture frame, fruit dish, spoon holler, bon bon dish, creamer, pie knife, cream ladle, berry spoon, 2 souvenir spoons, sugar spoon, orange spoon, cucumber spoon, strawberry fork and spoon, salt dishes and spoons, souvenir spoons, (the last fourteen mentioned articles all gold lined,) cut glass and silver salt dish and spoons, gold and Dresden souvenir spoon, 50 dolls in bottle and mat, Bohemian rose bowl and glass, yellow and gold picture throw. These presents were displayed on the table from which Mr. and Mrs. Ladd ate their first meal after their marriage, and all attracted great attention. At 8 o'clock the reception was ended, and then came an entertainment which was most enjoyable in every respect, consisting as it did of songs, addresses, and instrumental music. The male quartette rendered the part songs "The Belfry Bell" and "Ye Banks and Braes" with much feeling and accuracy. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. White were heard to great advantage in a duet which afforded ample scope for their flexible and evidently highly trained voices. The audience applauded vociferously when late in the evening Mrs. Brown in a chinning song vowed a vow of fidelity to Robin (sur name unknown). Miss Grace Thurston is not unknown to the musical portion of Island Pond, but it was generally allowed that on this occasion she surpassed any of her former efforts by the exquisite simplicity of manner and sweetness of voice with which she sang "Auld Lang Syne." We understand the original words of the song were exchanged for those of a poem presented to Mr. and Mrs. Ladd as an epithalamium and consequently the pathos of the composition was intensified. The only disappointment of the evening was the unavoidable absence of Hon. Geo. N. Dale, but the manuscript of his address was read by Porter H. Dale in his usual happy style, as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Ladd: My dear old friends; I am time. I am often reproachfully called the tomb-builder; but you who have known me so long know that I bring no evils on mankind that are not sent by a kind providence through me. Now I am not writing to you to boast of favors I have bestowed on you. But I see your good friends are bringing golden gifts, emblematic of the good opinions you have. 8. MRS. CLARK LADD
The sudden death of Mrs. Clark Ladd, one of our best known and respected women, occurred Monday morning, December 20, at 3 o'clock, after a week's illness from pneumonia, her age being 80 years, 9 months and 15 days. Susan Comfort Mason was married to Clark Ladd January 20, 1816, and of this union eleven children were born, eight daughters and three sons, who with the aged husband survive. All were present at the funeral save one, Seth, who lives in Oregon aud was unable to reach here in season. Nearly nine years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ladd celebrated their golden wedding, and a public reception was tendered them at the opera house. Mrs. Ladd was a woman of most estimable qualities. She endeared herself to a wide circle of acquaintances, and she was untiring, sincere, and devoted in her home duties, husband and children. A more extended sketch will appear later. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Almon Smith, with whom she and her husband had made their home the past year. Rev. Thos. Hall officiated and spoke words of comfort. Many beautiful floral offerings attested the love and respect of friends. Mr. Ladd, who is in feeble health, has received assurances for himself and for his stricken household of the profound sympathy of many of their friends in the sorrow which has fallen on them. Clark H. Ladd was born in Danville December 19, 1823; his wife Susan C. Mason, was born in the same town March 11, 1824. They were married in Danville January 20, 1846. They moved to Island Pond and have resided there most of the time for fifty years, but at present are with a daughter in Dorchester, Mass. They have had eleven children, eight girls and three boys, all living, the oldest 56, and the youngest, 35 years old. They have twenty-five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. On the 50th anniversary of their marriage a reception was held at the opera house, Island Pond, and on that occasion the couple and their eleven children were in line to receive their friends. Ladd, who has been in feeble health for some time past, but confined to his bed about two weeks, passed away Monday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Almon Smith, in his eighty second year. Mrs.Ladd died the later part of last December. The funeral service is being held at his late home this Thursday afternoon. We refrain at this time from giving more than this brief announcement of his death and burial, inasmuch as a sketch of the deceased is being prepared for publication next week. 7. CLARK H. LADD
When the tax list for the town of Brighton was made up a half a century ago, it included the names of only six men that were until recently still living. There were then listed here, Ephraim Danforth, Samuel D. Hobson, Clark H. Ladd, George W. Mason, Alvin E. and William R. Rosebrook. All but these had one by one passed on, and now Clark H. Ladd has gone, and men are talking in the places where they congregate of events in the town and incidents in his life through the long period of time he lived here, and the general conclusion of all is that he was unusually fortunate. What, men should toil most to possess was abundantly granted him. First he had good health and pursued an honorable avocation. His workmanship was of the finest made so by qualities inherited and then developed by application and a pleasure coming to him from his occupation that attached him to it. Many fine pieces of carpentry were executed by him, among which are the big black walnut desk that has so long stood in the Bartlett store, and some of the interior finish in the National Bank. It seemed to be his ambition to do his work well and provide abundantly for his family. To this desire his attention was given almost exclusively, and he accomplished it, well. His work was not done hurriedly and slightingly, nor did he live fretfully and selfishly at home, but he went earnestly to his labors and returned pleasantly to his family, he appeared to act in all things after a normal and healthful manner. In all he desired and accomplished he was sustained and assisted by a wife, whose disposition accorded with his that they acted in unison and with a kindred purpose. He was born at Danville, Vt., December 19, 1823, and in that same old town less than ninety days thereafter, she was born on March 11, 1824. There they grew from childhood to know and trust and love each other well nigh perfectly, and on January 20, 1846, Susan Comfort Mafon became the wife of Clark H. Ladd, and together they set forth courageously upon the course they were to travel for fifty nine years till they should reach the borders of the undiscovered country into which she was to precede him by days only a few more than those that separated them at the commencement of their earthly lives. That they entered upon their human existence at dates so close together, to live so faithfully each for the other through more than four score years, till only a few days apart they would take on immortality, is strangely beautiful; and when added to this, one considers the fact that eight girls and three boys were born to them all of whom were to be spared even to the days when they should bow in reverent gratitude and sorrow above the mortality of their beloved parents, it recalls again the lines that were quoted to conclude the exercises on their golden wedding day and makes one realize that there are indeed times "When earth below, and heaven above, proclaim truth stranger than a dream"
The children are :
Mrs. Amelia S. Sheafe, Brookline, Mass.
Seth W., Baker City, Oregon.
Miss Jennie M., Island Pond.
Mrs. Ella E. Sterling, Vanceboro, Me.
Mrs. Martha J. Smith, Island Pond.
Mrs. Lizzie C. Dunham, Island Pond.
Mrs. Flora B. Bigelow, Dorchester, Mass.
Mrs. Abbie L. Morrill. Boston. Mass.
John F. Everett, Mass.
Mrs. Nettie G. Stevens, Somerville, Mass.
Luther H., Colebrook, N. H.
Mr.Ladd is also survived by a brother, Charles D. Ladd of Lyndonville, Vt. Perhaps there is no way by which the pulilic can more accurately estimate the character of a man or a woman than by the words and manner in which their children speak of them. When a man has been kind and generous and has otherwise so conducted himself in his family that, all his children bow in genuine sorrow when he is taken and then rise up to praise him it is the best testimony that can be given of him. While this is particularly true of the deceased, it is also apparent that of him all who were his fellow citizens speak in terms of high esteem, and relate many incidents expressive of the goodness of his heart and the justice of his mind. For a long period he was one of the local magistrates, and many causes were heard before him. His rulings and decisions indicated his character and won for him a distinct reputation. Nearly all the lawyers who have ever practiced in town appeared at times before him, and though some of them had frequently to be disappointed, all agreed that no personal relationship, influence or motive had any effect with him, but that he sought simply to get at the equity of the matter that he might give a righteous judgment, and his natural discernment and unswerving purpose led him to conclusions that were almost invariably sustained if considered by a higher court. In political affairs he had firm convictions that he had reached by close observation and thorough investigation, and to them he was "True, fixed, and constant as the Northern Star."
From the organization of the republican party he was its strong adherent, and for the late president McKinley he expressed his warmest admiration. The conduct of men rather than their profession had weight with him. He demanded by his whole nature that they be virtuous, temperate, honest and just, and lived in the truth that somewhere, sometime, all men would recognize the right and be unable to resist its saving power. Much good must come from the reflections awakened by this event, not the least of which is the consideration of the sincere affection and untiring solicitude with which the children of this aged couple through many years did all within their power to repay the toil and sacrifice of a mother and father who had given the strenght and thought of their lives in devotion to the children, and it is encouraging to observe that when overtaken by age all their needs were anticipated by the kindest initial appreciation. Certainly they were fortunate in living to see such generous returns for what they had bountifully given, in having been spared so long time from illness and death, and finally in meeting tha last great change with so little to regret in lives that had come up through long years so nearly as one might wish and so unusually free from the disasters that are natural to existence. The family and friends cannot avoid the inevitable grief of this event but over it all there must be much of consolation to each one left. In looking back to that joyous occasion nine yearn ago when the whole community turned out t express its good will on that golden wedding day, we recall the words of one who had long known intimately the departed and who went on before them, as shaking of the event that must .sometime overtake them, and that has now come, he said "It is immaterial when that shall occur to any one of us, if our destiny is fulfilled and our work finished. You, my friends, will not soon die. In your interesting lives you have revived the grandeur of patriarchal times, and will live in the lives of your children and children's children through many generations." (Essex County Herald, April 14, 1905)

An Aged Citizen Passes to His Last Reward.
Jonathan Mason, an aged and highly esteemed citizen, passed away Sunday night about 8:30 o'clock at his home at 560 Crosby street. Death was due to exhaustion after an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Mason was born in Barnet, Vt., April 9, 1826, and was therefore aged 80 years, 4 months and. 24 days. In 1850 he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Hazeltine, and they made St. Johnsbury, Vt., their home for many years. About six years ago Mr. Mason and his wife moved to this city, celebrating their golden wedding here. The deceased was a stationary engineer by occupation, but since his residence here lived a retired life. He was a man of sterling character and greatly admired by all who knew him. Besides his aged wife, seven children survive. They are: Frank H. Mason, R. P. Mason, Charles F. Mason, Freeman D. Mason, Miss Mary E. Mason and Miss Jeannette M.
