1. Son of Louis Johnson and Phoebe "Nancy" Marsh.

2. BEN H. JOHNSON (1865). One of the very earliest of the settlers of Jackson county who now resides in the county is B. H. Johnson, who lives a retired life in the village of Jackson. During the early days Mr. Johnson took an active interest in the affairs of the new county and participated in its organization. Mr. Johnson was born in Plymouth, Litchfield county, Connecticut, August 1, 1834, the son of Louis and Nancy (Marsh) Johnson. He received a public and academic education in Watertown, Connecticut, and at the age of eighteen years came west and located in Baraboo, Wisconsin. He farmed in the vicinity of that town ten years and then enlisted in the army. The date of his enlistment was December 4, 1862, when he became a member of company F, of the Third Wisconsin cavalry. He served in the union army until September 29, 1865, when he was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Immediately after his discharge Mr. Johnson returned to his old home in Baraboo. He immediately made preparations to seek a home in the new country of Jackson county, and on Christmas day, 1865, landed on the Des Moines river. He bought sixty acres of land, partly in Des Moines township and partly in Wisconsin township, and also filed a home stead claim to land in Wisconsin adjoining his sixty acres. His life during this pioneer period was full of hardships, as were those of nearly all the settlers of that day. In January, 1868, while he was away from home, his house and everything in it was destroyed by fire. Mr. Johnson and his family then moved into a little log house which was located on an other part of his farm.

Until September, 1873, Mr. Johnson continued to farm in Jackson county. Then, on the fifteenth of the month, he set out with a team for Kansas to make his future home in that country. He located at Burr Oak, in Jewell county, bought an eighty acre farm near town, and engaged in agricultural pursuits about five years. He then moved to town and for about fifteen years was engaged in the drug business. He was street, commissioner of the village for three years and during the rest of the time he was a resident of Burr Oak he lived a retired life. In 1903 Mr. Johnson returned to his old home in Jackson county, and since that time has made his home in Jackson.

Upon the organization of Jackson county in January, 1866, Mr. Johnson received the appointment of clerk of the district court and served until his successor was elected and qualified. As there were practically no duties to perform the office was a nominal one only. He was a member of the board of county commissioners in 1867 and 1868, and during those years served as chairman of the board. He held the office of justice of the peace four years and was assessor in both Wisconsin and Des Moines townships. Mr. Johnson is a Mason and a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge.

Mr. Johnson has been married twice. His first marriage occurred at Reedsburg, Wisconsin, November 9, 1859, when he wedded Emma T. Cornish. She died October 3, 1871, aged 29 years. To this union two children were born: Rollan W., born December 4, 1860; Irving V., born January 16, 1870. His second marriage occurred April 3, 1873, in Jackson, when he wedded Martha Moore. As a result of this marriage the following children were born: Louis L. and Lloyd W., twins, born October 6, 1879; Ethel W., born January 31, 1881; Gretla H., born May 16, 1886, died May 20, 1891; Alice C, born September 3, 1887.

Johnson --; On Thursday, April 10,1884, Loyd Johnson, aged four years, son of Mr. and Mrs B. H. Johnson, of this city. Loyd was one of the bright little twins who were taken sick with scarlet fever just six weeks ago, and after anxious days and sleepless nights of watchful care hope was abandoned and he began drifting away from them, going out alone into the dark voyage where so many have been wrested from loving hands, and as they tried in vain to keep him, or even to soothe with their kind solicitude his last brief sorrows, they, too, experienced in the bitter hour of parting the pangs of death. They only hoped he did not suffer now. The rings of golden hair lay damp and unstirred on the white forehead the roses were turned to lillies on his cheeks; the voilet eyes saw them not, but were upturned and fixed; the breath on the pale lips came and went, fluttered and seemed loath to leave its sweet prison. Oh, the awful, cruel strength of death, and the weakness and helplessness of love. They who loved him better than life could not lift a hand to avert the fell destroyer : they could only watch and wait until the end should come. The baby was dying and all was darkened and hushed. He lifted his eyes to theirs - eyes that even then had the glory and promise of immortality in them, and reached out the little wasted arms. Then he was gone far away whither they might not follow. He had crossed the dark river, and not alone. Oh, Infinite Father! when we weary and disappointed ones reach out pleading hands to Thee, wilt thou take us even as the little child and help us across over mountains of defeat and the valleys of humiliation into the eternal rest of thy presence, into tho green pastures and beside the still waters, into the City of the New Jerusalem whose builder and maker is God. 85. George Russell Moore (Samuel Moore , Susannah Morrison , John , Samuel ) was born on 16 Mar 1849 in Barnet, Caledonia Co., VT. He died on 19 Nov 1914 in Jackson, Jackson Co., MN. George was buried in Riverside Cemtery, Jackson, Jackson Co., MN. He was employed as 1900;banker.

1. George Russell Moore
George Russell Moore, capitalist and the president of the State Bank of Jackson, is probably the best known citizen of Jackson county. This work would be incomplete without the record of his life, and the history is one of interest, showing what can be accomplished by determined effort and business ability. The measure of man’s success is not only the heights he has reached but the level from which he has risen. Mr. Moore began at the lowest round of the ladder of prosperity, but he steadily worked his way upward, overcoming all difficulties and obstacles in his path until he now stands on an eminence that commands the respect and admiration of all.
He comes of sturdy New England ancestors and good old Revolutionary stock. The family are Scotch-Irish and the great-grandfather, Samuel Moore, came to this country with a cargo of salt from county Antrim, Ireland, in early Colonial days and took up his residence in Vermont. The grandfather, Daniel Moore, was born in Caledonia county, that State, followed farming throughout his entire life and died in 1855, at the age of eighty-nine years. He married Susanna Morrison, and her maternal grandfather, John Moore, was a Colonel in the Revolutionary war. At the breaking out of that memorable struggle, he at once entered the service, took part in the battle of Lexington and remained with the army until independence was achieved.
Mr. Moore’s great-grandfather, on his mother’s side, Abijah Smith, also served in the same battle. Living at Lexington at the time, he ate his breakfast at his own home before starting. When his good wife urged him to eat heartily, he remarked that she did not want him killed with an empty stomach! He served his country until the close of the war and came home safely.
Mr. Moor’s father, Samuel Moore, was born in the Green Mountain State, also carried on agricultural pursuits as a means of livelihood, and on the 22d of February, 1841, was united in marriage with Abagail Wyman. Eight children grace this union, and a brief record of them is here given: Josiah Hardy, the eldest, now engaged in farming in Hart township, Winona county, Minnesota; Henry Albert, living on the old Vermont homestead of 107 acres, which was purchase by his father; Catherine, who became the wife of Frank E. Sanderson and died in 1883; Martha, wife of B. H. Johnson, a druggist of Burr Oaks, Kansas; Ella Mary, who makes her home with her brother, George, the next of the family; Judson Samuel, who died at his home in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1883; and Lyman Abijah, the youngest of the family, engaged in the commission and brokerage business in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Mr. Moore, whose name introduces this sketch, was born in Barnet township, Caledonia county, Vermont, March 16, 1849, and acquired his education in the public schools of his native State. He left the East in July, 1867, and went to the home of his uncle George J. Bean, in Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, aiding him in agricultural labors until the following spring. In May, 1868, he selected a farm on section 20, Wisconsin township, Jackson county, and his uncle then came to this place and paid for the land. This place Mr. Moore farmed for three years, when he secured a farm of his own by locating a homestead on section 26, Enterprise township. This was in 1871, and during the next few years he worked at various employments which would yield him an honest living. In the spring of 1875 he entered the county treasurer’s office, where he worked in various capacities for a time, then served for one year as Deputy Treasurer. In the fall of 1878 he was elected Clerk of the County Court and filled that position for eight consecutive years, with credit to himself and satisfaction to all concerned.
During this time Mr. Moore acted as financial agent for various concerns and individuals and developed a remarkable ability in this line. On his retirement from official life he established a private bank in Jackson and finally merged this into the State Bank of Jackson, which was incorporated in May, 1890, with a paid up capital of $25,000. The original stockholders were George R. Moore, Paul Berge, T. J. Knox, J. W. Cowing, M. B. Hutchinson, G. A. Albertus, A. H. Strong, F. W. Lindsley and Alexander Fiddes. The first three named served as president, vice-president and attorney, respectively, while A. B. Cheadle acted as cashier and O. B. Olson as assistant cashier. The bank first occupied the old frame structure located on the site of the present fine building, into which they moved in the fall of 1893. It is an elegant brick structure, the best business block in Jackson, and was erected specially for the purpose for which it is now used. Mr. Moore has continued to serve as president of the institution, which has become one of the leading financial concerns in this section of the State, and its success is largely due to the conservative yet progressive business methods of him who is at its head.
Mr. Moore has one child, George M., who is now five years of age. Mr. Moore and wife occupy a very pleasant and commodious residence in Jackson, the abode of hospitality, and their friends are legion. He is a self-made man in the truest and best sense of that oft-misused term and through his business career has adhered to principles of honesty and integrity that have made him one of the most honored and respected of men.

1. William Copp Rev. Jan/1903 BEYOND THE RIVER. ANGEL OF DEATH HAS ENTERED MANY HOMES IN NORTHFIELD OF LATE. Rev. Wm. Copp, passed from earth Friday, Jan. 2nd, at the home of S. D. VanAmburg, after a brief illness, at the age of 79. He was one of the pioneer ministers of the M. E. church of Minnesota, widely known, and a faithful soldier of the cross of Christ to his full understanding of those things, ever valiant for the right and rigidly opposed to the wrong, possessing a heart as large as humanity itself and he will be greatly missed by the little children whom he loved very dearly. He was often seen with his buggy full of them driving around town on pleasant days in the summer. He was truly a friend to the poor and needy and to the sick as many can testify who has received favors from him. His death took place at the VanAmburg home at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and the remains were taken on the evening train to Ottumwa, Ia. for burial by his step-daughter, Mrs. George K. Moore of Jackson, Minn. He served in many of the big battles with his company and at the end of three months re-enlisted and was made captain of Company B, Ninth Ind. Infantry and led his company bravely until wounded at the battle of Shiloah which disabled him for hard service.
