Although unable to hear conversation sufficiently clear to understand it, he still has the gratification of hearing the voices of those speaking to him and of distinguishing a great number of sounds, and it is possible that he may eventually be able to understand conversation by aid of the instrument. 4. A Bad Accident
Seth Ladd, a deaf mute, who has been for about 12 years in the employ of the Eureka and Palisade Railroad Company, was at the Hay Ranch last Friday, and on the evening of that day went out to drive in some cows. While making a sudden turn with his horse, he fell out of the saddle to the ground. The animal stepped on, bruised and hurt him so badly, that he is in great danger of losing his life. Dr. Meiggs was sent for from Elko, that being the nearest town that a physician could be brought from, but up to the time of this writing, we have not learned what opinion the doctor has given. Ladd is a noble fellow and we hope to hear of his being out of danger and of his speedy recovery. (Eureka Weekly Sentinel, Nov. 3, 1888, p. 4)

5. Seth W. Ladd very agreeably surprised his parents Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Ladd by making them a call last Tuesday. Seth has been absent the past 19 years in Nevada, and his return at this time, when his worthy parents are about to celebrate their golden wedding, gives the whole family and other friends much pleasure. 2. FRANK H. MASON, 78, DIES AT HIS HOME Heart Attack Ends Colorful Career Of Veteran In Goodrich Plant
Contributes To Charity
The record of Frank Mason's half century and more in Akron and the story of his kindly influence upon the lives of others are inscribed in good deeds but there is no autograph to identify the author. Only when occasion demanded was there the plain Imprint of his generosity for all to see. These outstanding contributions include the gifts he made to Buchtel college and to Akron university. He Joined with F. A. Seiberling in presenting to the university it present library building. He gave Hie ground where Mason school stands to the city, provided the land for Elizabeth park and the wading pool, and by gifts of money made it possible for the First Congregational church on E. Market st. to build its church edifice. "But no man ever came to him for help to be turned away," said Attorney J. B. Huber, a life-long friend of the family. And that testimonial is perhaps the best index to the lengthy record of unselfish service that is Frank Mason's.
Makes Rapid Progress
The story of his rise in the Industrial world, stamped indelibly in the history of the B. F. Goodrich Co., must be an inspiration to young American manhood. He was 27 when he came here from the oil fields of Pennsylvania. He had been horn In Vermont and had shared for a brief interval the colorful life of a California mining town. Curiously enough, it wasn't the rubber industry that attracted him here. He came seeking a job with the old Buckeye Mower & Reaper Co., then a prosperous and flourishing concern. Wandering down S. Main st. the young man came upon a sign on a nondescript frame structure reading: "Goodrich & Tew." It was the beginning of the present B. F. Goodrich Co. He asked for a Job and was told the rate of pay would be 15 cents an hour. He had a wife and baby to support even then and he demurred at first but at length accepted employment and began a connection that was to endure for 52 years.
Climbs To Top
Alonzo Work, sr., long since deceased, was superintendent and he kept a vigilant eye upon the aspiring Vermonter. Within six months, Mason was foreman; within two years, he was superintendent, then general works manager and then vice president of the company and Dr. Benjamin Goodrich's right hand man. After the Goodrich-Diamond Rubber Co. amalgamation, occurring about 1912, Mason was chosen as vice chairman of the board and for several years was active chairman. He was named a director on the board about that time. Just before Dr. Benjamin Goodrich died years later, he wrote to Frank Mason urging that as first vice president he continue "to be alert to the constant safeguarding of the quality that has been built Into Goodrich products." And that was Frank Mason's principal hobby. He liked his wonderful farm at Turkeyfoot lake. was proud of his growing grain and grazing herds, enjoyed his social life and the friendship of those about him, but Goodrich company and Goodrich products were dearer to him than all these. He maintained an office in the general office building of the Goodrich company and was there as recently as 10 days ago. He found time always to devote to civic affairs and was a staunch supporter of all civic enterprises, gave liberally to the hospitals, to the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. and all other needs.
Wife, Daughters Dead
Sadly enough, while the accomplishments credited to him in the business world were unmarred, the chapter dealing with his family life is filled with sorrows that might well have broken a less sturdy spirit. He died the last of his own family after burying his wife, two daughters and more recently a granddaughter, Miss Elizabeth Howland, who passed away Sept. 23 of last year in Atlantic City. She was only 21. Mrs. May L. D. Mason, Frank Mason’s wife whom he married in 1876, died March 27, 1929. One daughter, Gertrude, who became the wife of Frank Howland died in 1911. Mrs. H. K. Raymond, Mason’s other daughter, died in May, 1924. Of the immediate family, four brothers, Richard P. Mason, 960 Wye dr.; Freeman D. Mason, 630 W. Market st.; Charles F. Mason, 313 W. North st., and Willis B. Mason of 191 Gale st.
Variety of Interests
The two son-in-laws are H. K. Raymond of Auld Farm and F. C. Howland, treasurer and manager of the Thomas Philips Co. There are two grandsons, John G. and Frank M. Raymond together with two great-grandchildren living. Frank Mason’s interests embraced a variety of ventures here. He was connected for years with the old First-Second-National bank and later with the first-City Trust & Savings bank in which he was vice president and director at the time of his death. He was a life deacon in the First Congregational church and a member of the University club. He made it possible for the club to possess its own home and grounds. Flags at the Goodrich plant and at the University club were at half mast today. (The Akron Beacon Journal, July 11, 1931, p. 3)

Frank married May Lois Dexter on 2 Nov 1876 in Mill Point, Ont., CAN. May was born on 5 Nov 1856 in Orono, Penobscot Co., ME. She died 1 on 27 Mar 1929 in Akron, Summit Co., OH. May was buried on 29 Mar 1929 in Glendale Cemetery, Akron, Summit Co., OH.

1. Frank C. Howland
It is true, as the Bible tells us, that "God loveth a cheerful giver." It must also be true that He loves a quiet giver one who has no thought of receiving public acknowledgment of what he has done. Such a giver both willing and modest was Frank C. Howland, who died suddenly Sunday at the age of 63. He had lived his entire life in Akron and he had had an influential and constructive hand in many worth-while activities. Yet he was not widely known beyond a relatively small circle of friends who were deeply devoted to him. That was because he was so totally unconcerned over being given credit for what he did. Mr. Howland had a tolerant, broad-minded approach to all problems. His tolerance extended to everything except rumor and supposition he insisted on facts and honored the truth. As president of the Better Akron Federation, chairman of a stockholders' committee in the First-Central Trust Co. reopening, treasurer of the First Congregational church, board member of the Children's hospital and in other responsible positions, Mr. Howland served the community faithfully. At the same time he was a successful businessman. But the memory which will always endure in the minds of his friends will be that of a kindly and considerate gentleman with an open mind and an open heart. 2. Fred Arbogast Dies While Ice Skating
EVEN EXPERT SKATERS fall once in awhile. And when Fred A. Arbogast tumbled Monday night at Iceland, the first reaction of other skaters was to smile. The smiles vanished in a moment. Death had struck down the nationally known sportsman and manufacturer of fish lures. Arbogast was 54. In his short lifetime he had risen from rubberworker to manufacturer. The Fred A. Arbogast Co., incorporated only a few years ago, employs over 200 persons. Last year the company's gross was "in excess of one million dollars," an official said.
ARBOGAST WAS short and stocky with a bull-like neck and shoulders. He seemed in boundless health until two years ago. On Oct. 20, 1945, two years to the day of his death, Arbogast col lapsed at his desk. He was admit ted to Peoples hospital. Ills health had been poor since that time. The strain of building up a na tionally known business was great. Until the company was in corporated a short time ago, it had been largely a "one man" concern. ARBOGAST WAS a native Akronite. He was born on Brown st., attended Henry school and Centr.il high school. He had a year at the University of Akron before he went to work in the rubber shops. Tho determination to outwit the finny "tribe went ba-k to a day when Arbogast was 12. He went with his father by horse and buggy to the Portage lakes, fished all day lit tho rain and came back empty-handed. In time he became expert with the casting rod. He was a former national champion and, at one time, held two world's records in casting. From boyhood, Arbogast had experimented with various types of lures. In the mid-20's he hit upon the idea of an all-metal minnow, the later famed "Tin Liz." IN 1926 he left Goodyear, where he was then employed, and started the manufacture of the Tin Liz. At other times, Arbogast had brought out other famous lures the Hawaiian Higgler, the Hula Dancer and the Jitterbug. His concern became the world's largest manufacturers of bass halts. The company had grown rapidly in late years. This year, it was completing a new office building. Arbogast leaves his wife, Nellie, whom he married In 1917; a son, Allen of Akron, and a daughter, Mrs. Robert Keene of Arizona, Three sisters also survive, the Misses Gladys and Doris of Akron, and Mrs. Hazel Sarver of Troy, O. Private services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday at the Billow funeral home. Burial will be in the family plot at Medina Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 today. They are asked not to send flowers.
