1. A Century Ago, April 16, 1874, A RUNAWAY HORSE
An accident occurred at Stanstead Plain on Saturday in this wise: Mr. D. A. Mansur was driving from his house to the Plain when one of his shafts became detached from the sleigh, frightening his horse to a run, and eventually tipping Mansur out. The horse continued on and freed himself from the sleigh at the north end of the village. Continuing on with the shafts attached until he reached Daly's store, he made for the passage between the store and house of Jas. Daly, standing across which was the hoprse and sleigh of Mr. Harry Searles of Barnston. Mr. Searles just preparing to leave. The horse leaped over this obstacle, throwing Mr. Searles down. This sudden assault frightened Mr. Searle's horse, who also started to run, dragging Mr. S. by the reins down as far as the Town Hall, badly bruising him bt contact with the ground, stones, etc... but did not get loose. In the meantime the Mansur horse took a tyrn around the store and on coming to the street ran into Canfield's milk wagon and upsetting that was shortly after captured. We have not learned whether Mr. Searles hurts are of a serious character. (Stanstead Journal, Apr. 18, 1974)2. 5. Girl Kidnapped By 3 Armed With Knives
Three Detroit youths are held in Macomb County Jail today charged with the abduction of a 19-year-old girl who escaped her captors when their car overturned in flight at Harper avenue and Wolf road. The girl, Ila Treble of 1941 Grand avenue, was taken from her escort. Stanley F. Roberts, 20, cashier of the Lake Shore Country Club, when the couple were held up by the three who were armed with knives. Sheriff's deputies arrested them as they were putting their ditched car on the road. The prisoners are Ruehl Wandrle, 20, Tony Zeppa, 18, and Joe Titto, 21. "Stanley and I had parked the car at Gratiot and the Eight-Mile road and I was changing places with him so I could drive, when the three men drove by, stopped and came back," Miss Treble said. "They took the keys to our car and made me get into theirs. After driving around for a while they started for Wolf road. They kept threatening me with knives when I was in the car. They stopped on Wolf road and then started going about 60 miles an hour. All of a sudden the car went into the ditch. I grabbed one of the knives they dropped and ran out on the road. The three men ran into the woods." A passing motorist picked Miss Treble up and drove her to Mt. Clemens. In the meantime Roberts had notified police and three deputies found the alleged abductors. 5. Cotton can be cultivated in Michigan's climate.
Lacy W. Brower, of 1470 Clairmount Ave., has demonstrated. Sunday he displayed as proof 25 fully developed cotton plants glowing in the backyard of his home. Brower, who operates a beauty shop and is first of all a hairdresser, has been connected with cotton farming all his life. Raised on his father's farm near Sayre. Okla., he earned "the first money I ever made" by cultivating 40 acres when he was 13 years old. His father died about a year ago, and Brower inherited 105 acres in Oklahoma on which he is continuing to raise cotton. When he visited his farm this spring, he decided to bring back some seeds "just to see if they would grow here." "The plants grew surprisingly fast up here," he said. "I planted the seeds May 15, and early In July one of the plants was already in bloom. We could actually see them grow, for the plants increased their height three or four inches weekly. They now are four feet tall and are as big as any in Oklahoma." His cotton Is the "long staple" variety, so-called because its lint is longer than that of other types, Brower said. His father succeeded in cultivating it by sorting out the choicest seeds from each of his crops for '.10 years. Singling out the largest of his plants, Brower pointed to the various stages of cotton s development. First comes a bud, called "square," he said, which turns Into a white blossom. The blossom turns pink before changing into a pod-like formation called a boll Finally, when the cotton is ready to be picked, the pod bursts. It is because of the various stages of development in the plant, that he feels that a cotton-picking machine will never be successful Brower said. (The Detroit Free Press, Oct. 12, 1936, p. 3)

The death of Frederick William Hesse, a much respected and well known man and who was a pioneer in business here, occurred Sunday at his home in Rincon Valley, where he passed away quite suddenly. Heart trouble is attributed as the cause of his death. Twenty-three years ago Mr. Hesse bought a residence in Rincon Valley, which he occupied up to the time of his death and there raised and fostered his children in the good principles of which he himself had made an exemplar during his well-spent life. When only a boy Mr. Hesse embarked for America from Germany, where he was born sixty-eight years ago. By dint of hard work he accumulated the property of which he died possessed. During his business activity he was the proprietor of a machine shop and blacksmith shop in this city, to which employment he came from his ranch in the early morning and returned in the evening. Prior to coming to this country he had served his country bravely in the army. When the deceased had retired some years ago his business was carried on by his son, W. E. Hesse, who is at present conducting it. The children of the deceased, who are much grieved over the loss of their kind father, are Mrs. Leonard Wendt, Mrs. Edward Nelson. Miss Sophie Hesse. Walter. Carl P. and Herbert Hesse.
