1. Daughter of Henry Francis Clifford and Martha Jane Carr.
- WAY’S MILLS, Que., April 27.— There passed away on April 12th., a very familiar figure in the person of Mr. Henry Francis Clifford, born in Hatley May 5, 1853. The late Mr. Clifford came with his parents, Francis Clifford and Delia Way, to Bamston to live. He always followed his trade of carpenter and carriage maker and many evidences of his work still remain, among these being the beautiful work on the inside of the Anglican Church of this place. It can be well said that whatever he did was well done, and his ambition was greater than many a younger man’s. In 1872 he married Eivira E. Towle, adopted daughter of Rodney Towle, Boyntoon. Four children were born of this marriage, Bertha Gertrude, who died Seventeen years ago; Frank A., who now resides in Claremont, N. H., Nettie M. (Mrs. H. J. Adams), of Roxbury, Mass; also Eugene. D., of Newport. In 1880 he married Rhoda Peters, of Barnston, one child, Frederick J., came of this union. ln 1883 he married Martha Jane Carr. Three children came of this marriage Belle (Mrs F. C. Daniels), of Way’s Mills, Que; Flossie (Mrs. N. G. Wheeler), of Newport, Vt.; and Leona
Clifford, of Barton, Vt. In 1905 he had the misfortune to lose hits left arm in the planer in his
shop. Nothing daunted he kept on with his work. In 1912 he lost two fingers off his hand by the shingle saw. This would have taken the courage of most men, and tempted them to give up the fight, but on recovery Mr. Clifford continued his work until another accident. This time he fell
and broke his wrist. He however stuck to his work and with the help of his wife he stayed in the old place (which was a dear home to him) and went on with this work until the end. Four years ago he had a very severe illness, from which it was thought he would not recover. However, he recovered but his health has never been good since, He kept to his work until four weeks before his death. Everything was done for him that could be done, but all in vain, He was tenderly cared for by all, especially his wife, who has been a constant companion and has never failed him in any hour of need. The family had all been at home to be with him, except Frank, who did not arrive until after he had passed away. The funeral was held in the Anglican Church on April 15th., his pastor, Rev. Mr. Kerr, officiating. Rev. Mr. Kerr spoke comforting Words from Cor. 16th. chapter. 35th. verse. The hymns sung were, “Lead Kindly Light," “Abide With Me,” and “I Long To Be There." a favorite hymn of Mr. Clifford's. The floral tributes were beautiful, consisting of a cross from Mrs. Clifford; a pillow with the word, "Daddy” from the children; a broken circle from friends and neighbors, and a spray from Mr. and Mrs. B. Bowley, of Newport. The bearers were Messrs. A. H. Dyson, W. A. Cramer and Claude E. Hovey, intimate friends and neighbors of a life time, also Mr. Fred Chesley who has been a friend the past five years. The interment
took place in the Burbank Cemetery where lay his first two wives, his father, mother and sister, Isadore. (April 1920)- WAYS MILLS, Que., Jan., 13.— Mrs. Martha Clifford died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. C. Daniels, of this place, on New Year’s morning, after an illness of only one week. She was taken ill on Christmas morning and remained very ill until Saturday, when she rallied and on Sunday seemed to be quite herself, Sunday evening she took a turn for the worse and never recovered, passing quietly away on January 1st. Mrs. Clifford was born in the United States
on February 2nd, 1857, and was seventy-two years, ten months and ten days old. Her maiden name was Martha Jane Carr, daughter of Chester Carr, who was a Civil War veteran. After the war Mr. Carr brought his two little girls to Canada, Martha found a home with the late James Herbert and his wife Lucinda Pierce, at Heathton, remaining with them until she was a young woman. On December 23rd, 1883, she was married to Mr. Henry Francis Clifford and they made their home here. Mr. Cliifford died nearly ten years ago. and since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. F. C. Daniels. She leaves to mourn the loss of a good mother,
three daughters, Mrs. F. C. Daniels, Mrs. N. G. Wheeler, Newport; Mrs. B. Preston, Boston; four step-children, Messrs. Frank Clifford, Claremont; Eugene Clifford, Newport; Fred Edson, Dixville; Mrs. H. J. Adams, Boston, only sister, Mrs. Hayes, Montreal. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers and she was laid to rest in the Burbank Cemetery beside the remains of her husband. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were her sister, Mrs. Hayes, Montreal, Mrs. Adams, her step-daughter, and Mrs. B. Preston, her daughter, of Boston. (Jan 1930)2. 3. KEITH - WHEELER
Wedding at First Baptist Church
One of Nashua's prettiest church weddings of the season took place at high noon Thursday in the First Baptist church when Miss Flora S, Wheeler, daughter of Mrs. Kate Wheeler, 8 Green street, Nashua, was united in marriage with Joseph W. Keith, a prominent attorney of Brockton, Mass. The church was prettily decorated with palms. Rev. J. Bruce Gillman of the First Baptist church performed the ring Episcopal ceremony before a large number of friends of the parties. Promptly at noon, the wedding party attended by the bridesmaid, Miss Miriam Turner of Bridgewater and the best man, Herbert Pratt of the same city, came down the aisle of the church, played the bridal chorus from Lohengrin at the entrance of the wedding party and Mendelssohn's wedding march as they left. The bride was becomingly gowned in white charmeuse silk, draped with chantilly lace with train. She wore a veil of white silk net fastened with range blossoms and carried a bouquet of bride's roses and lilly of the valley. The bridesmaid wore pink tulle and carried a bouquet of pink Killarney roses. A brother of the bride, Frank C. Wheeler of Wallingford, Conn., gave the bride away. The ushers were Edward McMaster, Roger Wheeler and Harold Porter, all of Bridgewater. Following the wedding ceremony the bridal party went to the Bethany room of the church and were served with a lunch of rolls, chicken sandwiches, cake, coffee and punch by Caterer Walter E. Harris. Mrs. Keith is a daughter of the late C. A. Wheeler of Nashua and Mrs. Kate Wheeler. She attended the Nashua Grammar schools and graduated from the Newport, Vt., High school and Bridgewater Normal school. She has since been a teacher in Massachusetts cities and Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The groom is a member of the law firm of Nutter, King and Keith of Brockton, the son of Sumner Keith of bridgewater, Mass. Mrs. Lahar is badly bruised and lamed and Saturday suffered much pain from the strained ligaments. Her clothing was torn and shoes and stockings torn off. Portions of her body were scraped and the gravel ground into the flesh. Only her determination to save her child gave the mother strength to hold the reins. Mrs. Lahar was taken to her home with her child by Olin Hardy and is being attended by Dr. J. H. Gaines. She was reported as somewhat more comfortable last night. the horse is one frequently driven by the family and is not vicious and was feeling unusually good for lack of exercise. the road leads down hill and makes an abrupt turn to the left over the long bridge and the horse navigated safely until he struck the car at the crossing. bad as the accident is, it might have been worse and Mrs. Lahar is oblivious to her own suffering in her joy that her child is safe. BARFORD, Dec. 12—There passed away on December 7 at his home in Barford an old and very highly respected resident in the person of Mr. Charles A. Baldwin, in his 80th year. The deceased was born in Barnston in 1845, and moved at an early age with his parents to Barford where seventy years of his life were spent. On September 16, 1873, he was united in marriage to Isabelle B. Chandler, of Barford. Since the decease of his wife in 1918 he had resided with his son, Mr. Harry A. Baldwin. The late Mr. Baldwin is survived by three sons, Clarence A. Baldwin, of Arizona, Austin B. Baldwin, of Boston, Mass., and Harry A. Baldwin, of Barford. The deceased was a charter member of the Coaticook Baptist Church, with which he united over fifty years ago and in which he served as deacon for nearly half a century. To evaluate the Christian influence and service of Charles A. Baldwin in the home, in the church and in the locality, would be difficult. The community acknowledges the sterling character, the devout life and the untiring, cheerful service of the one who has passed to his rest and reward. The funeral was held at the home on December 9, conducted by the Rev. G. K. Tyler, pastor of the church, assisted by Deacons A. G. Donaldson and Wm. Wallace, Rev. D. W. Terry, of Sherbrooke, a former
pastor of the church, Rev. A. C. Dixon, of Danville, and Miss Beatrice Odell, who sang two solos. Interment was made in the Crooker Cemetery. (Dec 1925)- BALDWIN— Died at her home, Coaticook, July 12, 1918, Isabell Chandler, beloved wife of C. A. Baldwin. (July 1918)
