3. Elton Lahar - Man dies after rescue from burning home
An 84-year-old fire victim from Middlesex Township died Wednesday afternoon at Hershey Medical Center.
Now Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick is investigating to determine a cause of death for Elton Lahar. Such an investigation is required for all unnatural deaths.
Lahar, a retired psychiatrist, was found Friday morning lying on the living room floor of his burning home in the 3700 block of Spring Road.
The elderly man went into cardiac arrest after escaping his burning bedroom. He was rescued by Middlesex Patrolman Andrew Wolfe, who crawled into the home to pull him out.
Lahar was flown to Hershey about 30 minutes later for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns in addition to his heart attack.
Pennsylvania State Police Deputy Fire Marshal Michael Rugh said the blaze was caused by a lamp that may have smoldered for awhile before igniting. No smoke alarms were in Lahar's home.
Second fire-related death
Lahar's death is the second fire-related death in Cumberland County in five weeks.
On March 15 Joanne "Star" Porter died in her apartment at 35 N. Hanover St., Carlisle.
Her cause of death and the cause of the fire have not been determined, though neither her death nor the fire is considered suspicious. ( The Sentinel, (Carlisle, PA), April 21, 2005)
