Leonard Bliss, 45, of Stanstead East, received a rifle bullet in the head.
STANSTEAD EST, 10. - A verdict of suicide in a moment of mental alienation was rendered yesterday on the body of Leonard Bliss, 45, of East Stanstead, by members of a jury investigating under the chairmanship of coroner Leonidas Bachand, of Sherbrooke. Miss Eileen Downing of Stanstead acts as secretary. The members of the jury were MM. Joseph Therrien, Normand Breault, Lucien Marion, Edgar Hill, Philibert Roy and Alfred Hill, acting as president of the jury. The deceased is survived by his wife. Mrs. Bliss and a daughter, Genevieve; his mother, Mrs. Charles Bliss; and five brothers, Albert and Wilbur, of Rock Island, Charles, of Stanstead, Wallace, of Stanstead East and Frank, of Johnson, Vt. The witnesses to the investigation were Mrs. Ruth Bliss, the deceased's wife, Dr. A.R.V. White, of Stanstead and Edgar Hill, of Stanstead East, a neighbor. A summary of the testimonies revealed that the victim had for some six months rather original habits and that in the last weeks he suffered from a strong mental depression, this due, still according to the testimonies, to household difficulties, Vers at six o'clock yesterday morning, a loud bang woke up Bliss' wife and daughter. The deceased had supported the barrel of a rifle 32 in the forehead. Death was instant.

1. Daughter of Parker Luther Ellis and Edna Jane Humphrey.
- Heathton, Oct. 18.—After a long period of ill health, followed by a fall which confined him to his bed since July, there passed to his rest at Heathton, September 26, one whose familiar cheerful presence will long be missed from the home and community. Parker Luther Ellis was born in Stanstead, January 4. 1861, the eldest son of the late Isaac and Missouri Farrington Eliis and has spent nearly all of his life in this vicinity. After his marriage to Edna J. Humphrey, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Humphrey, their home has been the one from which he has just gone forth. A man of sterling character, who took a bright and cheerful outlook on life, with a firm belief in the life beyond, the church, the neighborhood and the home have lost a supporter of all that was good, one who was interested in what would benefit the community and a friend to all. Funeral services held at the home on Saturday, September 28th were conducted by Rev. Hermon Carson and largely attended bv sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. Carson sang very feelingly the appealing hymn, "Lead Kindly Light,” and lovely flowers bespoke sympathy for the bereaved. Of the six daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. Ellis, two survive, Ruth, Mrs. L. B. Bliss, Stanstead, and Muriel, Mrs. H. C. Barter, of Cookshire. A brother, Hayes Ellis, resides in Montana, and a sister, Mrs. Walter Brown, in Franconia, N.H. (Oct 1935)

2. The Barnston Fur Farm which began in 1926 has an unusually well documented history. Fred Lahue provided a number of newspaper clippings from which we extracted the following information. Wilfrid Sevigny in partnership with his brother-in-law R. E. (Rosario) Gonthier established a fox and mink ranch at Barnston. The head carpenter was Ray Merrill. Shortly thereafter, probably in 1929, Wilfred Sevigny was killed in a train accident. The ranch was sold to Captain C. T. Pedersen, an arctic whaler and fur trader whose wife was a neice of Mrs. Ray Merrill and at whose home they spent their holidays. R. E. Gonthier was retained as manager and we presume the Captain went back to his arctic pursuits. Many years later, we visited the farm and were intrigued by the old, and at that time, abandoned sheds. The present day mink were housed in modern facilities. Because of the heavy snowfall the old sheds were built on piers. The floor was a good twelve to fifteen feet above the ground. The sheds were empty at the time of our visit and no evidence of built in pens could be found. Evidently the pens were individual and placed on the floor. The present day operators only remembered one problem and that was the prevalence of singe on the pelts produced in this windy location. Captain Pedersen sold the ranch in 1955 to Gilbert La Perle. He retired to his home near San Francisco and in 1969 he and his wife were killed in their beds by escaped convicts. He was 92 years of age.

1. Son of Oscar Miller Forbes and Mary Esther Converse.
- Oscar Miller Forbes; whose sudden and untimely death has shocked and saddened the entire community, was born in Northumberland, N. H., Jan. #, 1864. His father Allen H. Forbes moved to Colebrook many years ago and here Oscar lived during his childhood. He was educated at the common schools and at Colebrook Academy, and acquired sufficient education, so that he
taught school three winters, from 1884 to 1887 with excellent success. March 9th, 1885 he married Mary E. Converse, daughter of Rev. W. A. C. Converse, who has been widely known
in New Hampshire, as an educator and clergyman. Mr. and Mrs. Forbes have three children, Homer, twenty-four; Joyce, nineteen and Allen H., sixteen years of age. Soon after his marriage
Mr. Forbes purchased the Converse farm in Stewartstown, where he lived up to
the time of his death. He was a very industrious and tireless worker and in 1908 he had a serious nervous collapse, doubtless caused by overwork. Through medical treatment
and rest, he partially regained his health and for nearly a year he went about his work with something of his old activity. Early in March of this year, Mr. and Mrs. Forbes took a two weeks trip to commemorate their Silver wedding, visiting friends in Maine and elsewhere and he returned, seemingly rested, but the old nervous difficulty returned, and after an intense fight of
two weeks for life, he was obliged to ###ld to the call from the other shore. By the death of Mr. Forbes the community suffers a serious loss. He was a ######, faithful and honest man, a good neighbor and public spirited citizen who had taken an active interest in ##### and improving the North Hill Church and waa generous in supporting all good works. Genial, kind hearted and honest with the world, loving and tender at home, he will be long carried in remembrance.
CARD OF THANKS
To all who came to our assistance in these days of our sorrow, with words of love, or deeds of helpfulness; with tender songs and beautiful flowers, giving us to feel that, through God’s love, all
our friends were brothers and sisters— to all we offer our heartfelt thanks,
The family of the late Oscar M. Forbes
(The News and Sentinel, April 7, 1910, p. 2)

- Mary E. Converse was born in Ohio in 1861, daughter of William A. C. and Mary Tibbetts Converse. Most of her first eight years were spent in Ohio, her father being at that time principal of high school in Toledo, and later in Cleveland. Since 1869 she has lived, except for occasional periods of a few months, on the farm which her grandparents redeemed from the primeval wilderness in Stewartstown. In early girlhood she was called to assume cares and responsibilities far beyond her years. The care of an invalid mother and three younger sisters devolved upon her. Several years later the care of a crippled grandmother and of an invalid sister
were assumed during the years of the rearing of her children. She taught a few terms in both Columbia and Stewartstown before and after her marriage. She married Oscar M. Forbes, of
Colebrook, in 1885 and they worked happily side by side for 25 years until his illness and untimely death separated them and she went bravely on alone. Always her interest in all the interests not only of her own family, but also of friends and neighbors has been vital and outreaching, her sympathy ready and warm; and her helpfulness has been given to the utmost
of her ability, and frequently beyond the limits of her strength. To learn of a need assured her attempt to meet that need—exemplifying in her life much of the praise of a “virtuous woman” by the writer of old in Proverbs 30; 10 to 31. To herein connection with the other fine qualities of heart and mind and soul, there was given deep apprecation of beauty, whether in character,
in literature or in nature. She has loved and sought the wild flowers, and her own garden has been a source of great pleasure to her, and like all her joys, to be shared generously
with others. Always carrying her full share of responsibilities for the best interests of her communty—its schools, its church, its social helpfulness, of her it can truly be said “she hath done what she could.” As daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, she has left an example
of faithful devotion to duty, of unselfish service, quick, unfailing sympathy, of courage, fortitude, and patience under long suffering when strength failed. On June 24 she passed on. Three children are left— Homer Converse, a photographer of Littleton; Mrs. Alfred Knapp of
Stewartstown, and Allen Harris, Professor of Electrical Engineering State College, Pa. Ten grandchildren also survive her; and the three sisters. The large gathering of friends and
relatives who met to pay tribute to her memory was a more eloquent testimony to the loving esteem in which she was held than any words can give.
The appended poem from her own pen, written during a time of great suffering expresses beautifully the faith in which she lived and died.
S.T.C.

I ask with yearning “What is death?”
The answer comes, on silent breath,
“Death is my friend, who brings release;
At his soft touch all strivings cease.”
I do not mean life is not sweet.
And dear the sound of kindred feet;
But I have had all it can give;
Why wish a few more hours to live?
I know that I shall find you all
Beyond the low green curtain’s fall.
And it will be eternal gain
To find the land of “no more pain”

7. [hand written letter to Ella's parents; Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler]
Boston, Mass
Dec 29, 1896

To Mr and Mrs Wheeler,
You will no doubt be a little surprised to get a letter from me but I have something to tell
you that is of great importance to me also ask your consent to that which is very dear
to me and it is this I have for a long time thought very much of your daughter Ella and it
has come to live of the kind which will last as long as I live and I believe it is returned and
I have her answer that makes me very happy now I ask your consent to an engagement
with her and a wedding in the near future. Yo may think me rather bold but it is what my
whole life depends on I have been with her at Charlie's and it understands it and I have his
full consent. I will admit that my circumstances are not what I would wish but with her love
to help me I can or will try my whole life to make her happy and by doing that I will be so to.
I know you will be lonesome without her but I would not wish you to think you have lost her
for I would not do anything to make you think so and i will with god's help be what a true
husband ought to be. Hoping to hear from you either by letter or by way of Ella in the near
future I am ever yours with best wishes for a happy new year to all. from your friend and
hoping for something nearer.
Yours truly
