2. NORWALK WOMAN DIES IN BLAZE
NORWALK -- Mrs. Irene Sterling, 65-year-old widow, perished about 4 p.m. yesterday when police and fire officials said her clothing apparently caught fire in the kitchen of her home and she ran to a rear porch in a vain attempt to extinguish the blaze. Mrs. Sterling's body was found on the rear porch of her home at 7 Blake street after neighbors telephoned an alarm to Fire Headquarters. Firemen responded to what was believed to be a minor blaze in the Blake street home and found that Mrs. Sterling's flaming clothing had apparently set fire to a pile of books and papers in a corner of the living room near the rear door as she brushed past, running toward the porch. Investigators at the scene said Mrs. Sterling's clothing may have caught fire from the burner of an electric range and that the woman, crippled by severe arthritis, may have attempted to make her way to the back door of the house in an effort to get outside. When firefighters discovered the body of the victim lying on the back porch of the house, they found that her clothing had been completely consumed by fire.
Tragedy Pieced Together
As pieced together by Fire Chief Benjamin A. Mangels, the first inklings of the tragedy came to light when a newspaper delivery boy, eleven-year-old Glenn Dalmas, noticed a fire in the rear of the house while delivering a paper. The youngster, who did not detect the body of Mrs. Sterling, ran to the neighboring home of Mrs. Thomas Hobbs, who telephoned firemen. Two firefighters, returning from a nearby call, were advised of the alarm by radio and responded within minutes. They discovered the body of the semi-invalid woman and move it away from the house while quickly extinguishing the fire, which was confined to a corner of the living room and a portion of the floor below. They were assisted by additional personnel who arrived at the scene in response to the alarm.
Crutch , Brace Found
Mrs. Sterling's crutch and a wheel chair were found inside the house. A leg brace which she used walking, was found outdoors alongside her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Robert W. Nespor of Westport, medical examiner. Chief Mangels, Fire Commissioner Francis J. O'Hara and Mayor Frank N. Zullo went directly to the scene from City Hall where they had been participating in a press conference on an underwriter's report on the city's fire protection status. Yesterday's tragedy was the first death attributed to fire in Norwalk in two years, officials noted.
Had Been In Hospital
Alfred W. Burkhart, a Norwalk lawyer who served as conservator of Mrs. Sterling's estate, arrived at the Blake street home after being advised by police of her death. He told officials that Mrs. Sterling had been a patient in a convalescent home until the day before Thanksgiving when she returned home. Prior to her arrival at the Blake street house, he said, extensive repairs to premises, including rewiring, were completed, and a new electric range was installed. Mr. Burkhart said Mrs. Sterling was visited regularly by her physician and by a visiting nurse. Friends often stopped at the house and a relative of the victim visited her recently, he added. (The Bridgeport Post, Jan. 11, 1968, p. 55)
