2. That new secretary was Mrs. Marjorie Hutchinson, a bright, personable young woman who would fill in at the position “temporarily” and remain in Ed’s employ for several decades. Marjorie was the daughter of Deputy Sheriff William Sterling, one of Ed’s first close friends in Waterville, and like her father was “A red-hot Republican”. Their disparate political views were never a problem in the office, however, and she would become one of the first Muskie Republicans, voting for hi in every election. WATERVILLE — Marjorie S. Hutchinson 70 died Nov. 13 1983 in Waterville. She was born in Waterville the daughter of William and Mertle (Frost) Sterling. Her husband Cecil died in 1968. She was a private secretary for 35 years for Edmund S. Muskie former Governor, former US Senator and former Secretary of State. She is survived by two daughters, Janice Bradford of Newport and Ann Safford of Dover, NH, three brothers, Charles Sterling of Winslow, Donald of Vasselboro and Richard of Portland, four sisters, Shirley Beals and Eleanor Albert, both of Waterville, Pauline Burrill of Ellsworth and Bertha Reed of Madison, seven grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at the Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St. Waterville. Friends may call today at the funeral home 2-4 and 7-9 pm. WATERVILLE (AP) - Cecil M. Hutchinson husband of United States Sen Edmund S. Muskie’s personal secretary Mrs. Marjorie Sterling. Hutchinson at his office here, died at a local hospital Thursday afternoon following three weeks’ illness. He was 58 years of age. A native and lifelong resident of this city, he was well-known locally as a vocalist and was choir director the past several years at Getchell Street Baptist Church here. A Keyes Fibre Company employe he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Bourque Lanigan American Legion Post here. Surviving the World War Two veteran who served in the US Navy are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Dean Jakins of Newport, wife of a Maine State Trooper and Mrs. Lawrence Safford of Branford, Conn., a brother Waldo C. of Livermore Falls, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. BELFAST June 3 — Miss Margaret L. Wheeler of Waterville became the bride of Charles A. Sterling also of Waterville in St. Margaret’s Episcopal church here this afternoon the Rev. James Lester Hayes reading the double ring service. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Harold T. Wheeler of Waterville and the bridegroom is the son of Deputy Sheriff and Mrs. William I. Sterling of Waterville. The bride was attractive in an ensemble of navy blue with matching accessories and she was attended by Miss Pauline L. McCarran of Waterville as bridesmaid William J. McCarran of Waterville was best man. Several friends came over from Waterville for the ceremony. The bride and bridegroom were former parishioners of Mr. Hayes when he was located in Waterville. Charles married Margaret Loraine Wheeler on 3 Jun 1940 in Maine. Margaret was born on 27 Nov 1918 in Waterville, Kennebec Co., ME. She died on 18 May 2016 in Cooper Mills, Whitefield, Lincoln Co., ME.

Coopers Mills, Maine - Margaret Lorraine Wheeler Sterling, 97, passed away on May 18, 2016, at Country Manor Nursing Facility in Cooper Mills, Maine, where she was a resident for several years. Peggy was born in Waterville, Maine, on November 29, 1918. She was the daughter of Grace Lachance Getchell and Harold T Wheeler. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1937. She was employed by the Penny Hill Farms, Mulls Restaurant and retired from the Hathaway Shirt Company in 1980.
The family believes that Peggy was the oldest living member of St Mark's Episcopal Church in Waterville, Maine, and over the years had been active with several of the church's organizations.
Peggy loved flowers and gardening, was an avid reader, and liked to knit. She also enjoyed doing many different crafts. Bird watching in her backyard was a favorite pastime.
She was predeceased by a baby brother; her parents, Harold Wheeler and Grace Getchell; her husband, Charlie; her sister, Averil Huard; brother-in-law, Carroll Huard; and her daughter-in-law, Maxine Sterling.
Peggy is survived by her sons, Randall and his wife Jodi Hangen of Virginia Beach, VA, and Charles (Tim) and his wife Gayle of Plant City, FL; her two granddaughters, Julianna Williams of Baltimore, MD, and Kerri-Lynn Lowell and her husband Michael of Spencer MA; four great grandchildren, Jami-Lin Williams of Baltimore, MD, Timothy J Williams Jr. of Clinton, Maine, Alexandra Lowell and Dimitri Lowell of Spencer, MA. Peggy is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
There will be no visiting hours; however, there will be a celebration of Peggy's life that will be announced at a later date. The family would like to express their sincerest thanks to the entire staff at Country Manor Nursing Facility for the loving care of Peggy.

WATERVILLE - Maxine Rose Sterling, 64, of Virginia Beach, Va., lost her battle with cancer on March 9, 2008, in at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. A native of the Norview section of Norfolk, Va., Maxine was the only child of Albert McKenzie Rose and Dorothy Ivy Rose. She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Randy Sterling; her mother-in-law, Peggy Sterling of Waterville; brother-in-law C. Timothy Sterling and his wife, Gayle, also of Waterville; and two nieces, Julie Williams and Keri Lynn Lowell. Maxine was a graduate of Old Dominion University in 1971, and earned her master's degree at Mississippi State University in 1978. Maxine taught health and physical education in Norfolk and Virginia Beach for 25 years, retiring from Parkway Elementary in 1999. After retirement she worked at Lillian Vernon as a customer service trainer and at the Virginia Beach Convention Center as a ticket taker and event staffer. She was a passionate teacher, loyal friend and loving wife. Her great joy was traveling and cruising all of over the world. She was an active member of Saint Francis Episcopal Church, working in the ECW, and was the past senior warden on the vestry. ELLSWORTH -- Pauline Jessie Lillian Mccarron 74, died peacefully 11, 1994, at a Bangor hospital. She was bom 27, 1919, at Waterville, the daughter of William I. and Myrtle (Frost) Sterling.
She worked for 20 years at the Pizza Place and was known to her friends as “Maud”, ln her later years, she lived at Meadowview Apartments where she enjoyed her many friends. Her children were her pride and her grandchildren were her joy. She is survived by three sons. William J. Mccarron Jr. of Ellsworth, Deven P. Mccarron of Atlanta. Ga. and John C. Mccarron of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters. Shirley J. Ashmore of Ellsworth and Susan M. Frye of Anchorage, Alaska; one stepson. Louis F. and his wife. 1. William James (Bill) McCarron Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on March 7, 2022 in Tallahassee, Florida. Bill was born on October 13, 1942 in Waterville, Maine to William James McCarron and Pauline Lillian (Sterling) McCarron. A devout Catholic, he was baptized, received his First Communion and was Confirmed at Sacred Heart Church in Waterville, Maine.
Bill is survived by four siblings: Shirley Ashmore of Tallahassee, FL, Deven (wife Suz) McCarron of Johns Creek, GA, Susan Frye of Phoenix, AZ, and John (wife Mary) McCarron of Roseville, CA, by 9 nieces and nephews: Erin Young, Carrie Barnes, Christopher Ashmore, Sean McCarron, Kelsey McCarron, Robin Barnes, Katherine McCarron, Christopher McCarron and Ella McCarron, by 9 grand nieces and nephews and by a Godchild Lance Johnson.
Bill attended school in Waterville and Skowhegan, ME before graduating from high school in Orlando, FL from Colonial High School. He attended Florida State University earning both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees.
Bill received a commission in the Air Force in 1965 where he served until 1971 earning the rank of Captain. He served in Viet Nam from November 1967 to December 1968. He was a member of the Air Force Association, the Caribou Veterans Association and the American Legion where he served as Commander of Post 63 in Ellsworth, ME for three years. While living in Ellsworth, he also served as the Chairman of the Ellsworth Board of Assessment for 20 years as well as the Chairman of the Homeless Shelter Committee.
From 1971 until 1992, Bill ran The Pizza Place Restaurant in Ellsworth with his sister Shirley. He also worked in local real estate from 1987-1995 with Coldwell Banker and served as the President of the Hancock-Washington Counties Board of Realtors and Regional Vice-President of the Maine Board of Realtors. In 1995, Bill relocated to Anchorage, AK where he worked for Alaska Sales and Service in several capacities including salesman, sales manager and finance manager. He retired on Saint Patrick’s Day in 2009. He was a member of the Senior Activities Center in Anchorage and the American Contract Bridge League. He was a member of St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Anchorage where he served as a Sacristan, Usher, Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the St Paul Miki Council of the Knight’s of Columbus and served three terms as Grand Knight. He was also a long term member of the Northwestern Lieutenancy of the USA in the Equestris Ordo Sancti Sepulchri , the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. In 2011, he relocated to Tallahassee, FL where he spent time with family and continued playing contract bridge achieving the level of Life Master.
Bill’s funeral will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Tallahassee on March 18, 2022 at 10:30 A.M and will be lived streamed and archived. He will later be interred in his final resting place in St Francis Cemetery in Waterville, ME. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Heart Association.

MADISON - St. Sebastian Church was the setting June 24 for the wedding of Miss Shirley Jean McCarron, daughter of Mrs. Paulina S. McCarron of North Anson and the late William J. McCarron Sr. and Roy Thomas Matthews, son of Mr. and Phillip H. Matthews Sr. also of North Anson. The Rev. Paul Rancourt officiated. The bride, escorted to the alar by her uncle, Robert T. Beale of Waterville, was attired in a floor-length empire gown of white satin with embroidered lace sleeves and chapel train which flowed from the shoulder. Her elbow length veil was caught to a queens crown, outlined with seed pearls and teardrops. She carried a white missal covered with white roses and stephanotls, accented with pink Miss Doreen Tweedie, maid of honor, wore a hot pink floor-length gown of heavy satin with a headpiece of blue and, white carnations. Mrs. Grace Bryant, bridesmaid, was attired in a sea blue gown with headpiece of pink carnations and she carried a matching nosegay, Susan McCarron, junior bridesmaid, wore a gown of white satin with lace bodice of sea blue and matching headpiece. They all carried matching flowers. James King of North Anson was best man. H. Matthews Jr. served as usher and the junior usher was Deven Paul McCarron. John McCarron was train bearer. The reception was held at the Anson Town Hall. Assisting were Anson Firemen's Auxilliary, Joyce Gunther, Mrs. Sharon Dunham and John McCarron. Mrs. Matthews was graduated from Anson Academy and Thomas College this June where she majored in business education. She is employed by Maine Children's Home for little Wanderers as a caseworker and is temporarily attached to the Waterville area Head Start program as a social worker. Mr. Matthews was graduated from Anson Academy and is presently a junior at Thomas College, where he is majoring in management training. He is employed by Lucas Tree Experts Co. 2. Shirley J (McCarron) Ashmore of Tallahassee Florida, formerly of Ellsworth Maine, died peacefully on April 16th, 2023 surrounded by her loving children after a brief illness.
Shirley was born November 9th, 1944 to William J. McCarron Sr. and Pauline (Sterling) McCarron in Waterville, Maine. She graduated from Anson Academy in 1963 and Thomas College in 1967. She enjoyed a variety of careers including teaching, book keeping, and as a clerk for the Maine court system. Her favorite job by far was that of mother and then Nana to the family that she loved so well.
She is predeceased by her parents, a step father Ray Burrill, and her best friend and brother William J. McCarron Jr. She will be forever loved by her children Erin Young and husband Raymond of Ellsworth, Carrie Barnes and her husband Tony of Ellsworth, and Christopher Ashmore and wife Rachelle of Tallahassee Florida. She will be deeply missed by her 7 grandchildren Sarah, Anna, Rachel, Abigail, Abel, Eli, and Daphne. She will be dearly remembered by her siblings Deven McCarron of Georgia, Susan Frye of Arizona and John McCarron of California.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday August 5th, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Faith Community Fellowship in Trenton, Maine. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations in her memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

WATERVILLE -- Mr. Donald R. Sterling, 82, of Waterville died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Oak Grove Living Center where he had lived for the past 10 months. He was born on July 4, 1921, in Waterville, the son of William and Myrtle (Frost) Sterling. He grew up in Waterville and after high school enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska during World War II. He married Pauline Duplessie on May 12, 1950. He was a mechanic for most of his adult life, most recently at Thompson VW in Waterville. Mr. Sterling is survived by his wife, Pauline; daughter Jody Beaulieu and her husband, David, of Augusta; granddaughter Alison of Augusta; grandson Scott and his fiancee, Joanne Malcolm, of Bradford, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society in Augusta. 2. Obit: Pauline (Duplessie) Sterling, 86, formerly of Vassalboro and Waterville, passed away Oct. 1, 2010, at the VA Togus hospital after a long illness.
She was born July 14, 1924, in Vassalboro to Adrian and Alfred Duplessie. She was educated in the Winslow schools and served in the Navy for two years. She married Donald Sterling on May 12, 1952. He passed away on May 31, 2004.
Her greatest joy in life came when she became a grandmother and, three years ago, a great-grandmother. She enjoyed attending school functions, sporting events and dance recitals. She was an avid Red Sox fan and celebrated her 82nd birthday at Fenway Park watching a game.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Donald; her brothers, Arthur, Robert, Laurier, Fred, Emile and Norman; and sisters Dorothy, Louise and Nellie.
She is survived by her daughter, Jody, and husband David Beaulieu of Augusta; her grandson, Scott Beaulieu, and his wife, Joanne, and their son, George, of Bradford, Mass.; and her granddaughter, Alison Beaulieu of Hamilton, Bermuda. She is also survived by a special nephew, Paul Duplessie (her coffee buddy), and his wife, Myrna; sister-in-law Peggy Sterling; and many nieces and nephews.
At her request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. After cremation, she will be laid to rest at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
Her family would like to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans' Home for the excellent care she received in the last six months. A special thank-you to her "favorite" Tina Burton. We would also like to thank Dr. Pathak of the Togus VA hospital for his exceptional care of Mom.

Eleanor Beeh Albert, 68, of 6 Kimball St died riday morning at a Waterville nursing home following a long illness. She was bom in Waterville Nov 11 1923 the daughter of William and Myrtle rost Sterling She graduated from Waterville High School in 1941 She worked for a number of years at the Maine Central Railroad office in Waterville as ticket clerk She was also financial clerk for local insurance and financial companies and retired from Smiley’s Dairy in Winslow after having worked there for several years She was a member of the Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church and was active with the Ladies’ Prayer group She was an active member of the Grover Hinckley Post American Legion Auxiliary of airfield and a member of the Waterville TOPPS organization She was a Pioneer in grief recovery counseling and was one of the original organizers of the Waterville Area Widowed Persons Service conducting a number of seminars and lectures to different groups or a number of years she had been active at the Muskie Center and at one time served as President She was Past Chairperson and Secretary of Senior Spectrum Advisory Council and had a leadership role in the Capital Campaign fund raising for a major renovation project She received a number of awards for her work She also served on the Personnel Committee the Program Review Committee the Strategic Planning Committee and danced with the “oxy Ladies” She organized and managed “Katie’s Shady Nook” gift shop at the center She served on the Personnel Committee of the Community Action Program (KV CAP) Board of Directors She served on the 50-year Reunion Committee from Waterville High School last year She enjoyed making all kinds of crafts She was pre-deceased by two husbands John G Beeh Jr who died in 1973 and Napolean J Albert who died in 1985 She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Rosemary Beeh of Benton two sisters Mrs Shirley Beals of Waterville and Mrs Ray (Pauline) Burrill of Ellsworth two brothers Richard Sterling of ortuna Calif and Donald Sterling of North Vassalboro and three grandchildren Several brothers and sisters died previously uneral services will be held Monday at 11 am from the Lawry Brothers uneral Home in airfield Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Augusta.

John George Beeh Jr 54 of 2 Summit St Fairfield died Tuesday at the US VA: Center Togus following a long illness. He was born in Rangeley Aug. 4, 1918, son of George and Susie Tibbets Beeh and had been employed by the Maine Central Railroad for 25 years. A veteran of World War II and the United States Army he was a past commander of Grover-Hinckley Post, American Legion, Fairfield and a 25-year member of the Waterville Masonic Lodge. After retirement, he enjoyed working with the crew at Howland Recycling Plant. He lifted weights for many years and won many trophies doing that. He loved his grandchildren greatly and was very proud of them. In addition to his wife, Madeline, he is survived by three sons and their wives, Frederick Jr. and Sherrie of Houlton, Richard and Patty, and Mark and Pam, all of West Enfield; four grandchildren, Richard and wife, Heather, of West Enfield, Matthew and wife, Desiree, of Benedicta, Addison and fiancee, Brie, of West Enfield, and Todd of Enfield; great-grandchildren, David, Madelyn, Maren and Niaomi; a brother, Edwin of Augusta; a sister, Marjorie of Brewer; several nieces and nephews. 2. HOWLAND - Madeline M. Lindsay, wife of the late Frederick A. Lindsay, Sr., passed away peacefully June 4, 2017, at a Bangor hospital, with her family by her side. She was born August 4, 1934, the daughter of Elden and Dorothy (Tapley) Chase.
Madeline held a variety of jobs throughout her lifetime. One of her favorite pastimes was singing karaoke and daily visits to the 95er Diner in Howland. She also loved spending time at the Eagles Club when they had a chapter in West Enfield. Another favorite was following her sons and then her grandsons in their chosen sports while growing up.
Madeline is survived by her sons and their wives, Frederick Jr. and his wife, Sherrie, of East Millinocket, Richard and his wife, Patty and Mark and his wife, Pam, all of West Enfield; her grandsons, Richard and his wife, Heather, of West Enfield, Matthew and his wife Desiree, of Lincoln, Addison and his fiancée, Briawna, of Greenbush and Todd and his fiancée, Shaylyn, of North Howland; great-grandchildren, David, Madelyn, Maren, Niaomi, Frederick, Georgia and Noah; brothers, Walter, Peter and Harrison; sisters, Helen, Miriam and Mary-Elizabeth; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Elden and Dorothy; husband, Frederick, Sr.; brothers, Charles and Fred; and sister, Anna.

Augusta - Edwin C. Lindsay, 85, died November 15, 2022, at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, where he had been a resident since June of 2015. He was born April 13, 1937, in West Seboeis, which was only accessible at that time by train. He was the last child of Elmer C. and Sarah E. (Fleming) Lindsay.
Edwin was in the last graduating class of LaGrange High School, class of 1956. He went on to college and obtained his bachelor's degree in 1960 from Baptist Bible College in Johnson City, New York. Drafted into the Army in 1960, he served as a Chaplin's assistant for two years.
Ed would go on to teaching school in Maine, at North Dixmont and Garland, prior to obtaining his master's degree in Guidance Counseling from University of Maine at Orono. Ed then worked as a guidance counselor at Katahdin High School and Limestone High School. He took a year off to teach for a Baptist Mid-Missions School, Portulala Academy, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he enjoyed the year round climate.
After his time in Brazil, he worked as a guidance counselor at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle from 1974-1979. Ed enjoyed his work as the Teacher Placement and Certification Officer for the State of Maine. While living in Augusta, Ed was a deacon for the Augusta Baptist Church. Ed also had a love for good Christian literature and reference books, encouraging others in this area.
Ed had a deep interest in physical fitness and for a short time he worked as a trainer at a Nautilus Fitness Center. He enjoyed weightlifting and was involved with some state weightlifting meets, even as a Master of Ceremonies.
After leaving his state position in 1979, and taking some time off, Ed moved to Gorham, Maine in 1980, where he worked at the University of Southern Maine, overseeing the gymnasium and supervising work study students. He enjoyed his work there with students and staff and remained there until 1996. For a short time there, he also worked in Student Loans. After his work at USM, Ed retired and moved to Augusta in 1996, where he remained until his passing.
Ed's nieces, Joyce Ashley and Nancy Brown, traveling a distance, would make Ed's day special by always bringing a good supply of candy and Reny's chocolate bars for Ed's sweet tooth.
Two friends of Ed, who were helpful to him in his senior years, were Jim Levesque and Matt Washuk.
Ed is survived by nieces, Jean Johnson and husband, Bruce, of Waite Haven, PA, Joyce Ashley and husband, Stephen, of Northeast Harbor, Nancy Brown of Eddington, and Zita Osgood of Brewer; and nephews, Frederick Lindsay Jr. of East Millinocket, Richard Lindsay and wife, Patty, of West Enfield, and Mark Lindsay of West Enfield.
Ed was predeceased by his sister, Marjorie Osgood and husband, Arnold; brothers, Earl, and Frederick and wife, Madeline Lindsay; and by his nephew, Robert Osgood.
A sincere thank you goes to the staff of Constellation Hospice for their wonderful care for Ed over these last three years. They made Ed's life just a little better each step of the way and have really cared for his personal needs. Also, the family and friends of Ed extend a hearty thank you for over seven years of great care to Ed by the staff of the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation. They have been Ed's second family and have given him such special attention and care every day.
