Pam graduated from Waterville High School in 1975. After marrying Frederick Smiley in 1976, they lived in both California and Texas then eventually moved back to Winslow to raise their family. Pam worked at the Winslow Town Office for 31 years, most recently as the Town Clerk.
Known to her grandkids as Grammy or Gramma-Pamma, she loved to be with them and spent most evenings and free time bouncing around visiting them. Selfless and hardworking, Pam never hesitated to help anyone and never asked for anything in return. Her kind, loving soul and infectious laugh brought comfort to many. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and "preserving the harvest." Pam's famous dilly beans, Chex mix, tourtière pie and meatballs are among the many items loved by family and friends. Family was the most important thing to Pam. Her favorite times were summer trips to Rhode Island and holiday gatherings surrounded by all the chaos, good food and love.
Pam is survived by her four daughters and their spouses; Rene Smiley and Jack Stepp of Winslow, Jessica Smiley and Peter Cheesman of Winslow, Emily Smiley of Waterville, Jillian Smiley and Joe Bard of Fairfield, six grandchildren; Eliott, Nora, Marlon, Hudson, Atlas and Jane, five siblings, eight sisters and brothers-in-law, twenty-two nieces and nephews and eight grand-nieces and nephews. 1. Son of Richard Smileyand Beverly Fournier.
- F. Richard Smiley, 1929 - 2015
WINSLOW - A lifelong Central Mainer, pillar of the dairy community, and beloved family patriarch, Frank Richard Smiley passed away on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015. We will fondly remember his cheerful nature, passion for business, great love he had of his family and enthusiasm for snow plowing during a good old Nor'easter.
Rich was born on Nov. 17, 1929, the fifth of Milton P. and Florence (Norton) Smiley's six children, and their only son. He grew up in Winslow, attended Boston Avenue Elementary School, and graduated from Winslow High School in 1947. He then attended the University of Maine at Orono for two years, before returning to Winslow to begin his career.
Rich met the love of his life, Beverly Fournier, at Laverdier's in Waterville. After four years of dating, they were married in 1953 and together had four children. Rich's passion for the dairy business began early in his life, but it was while he was a student in Orono showing Jersey cows that he realized that he was truly destined to continue the family farm and dairy. Early in his career, a devastating fire destroyed the homestead and dairy in 1953. With the help of the community, a new home was built and the dairy business began to prosper featuring Smiley's Dairy Bar, which boasted 24 flavors of old-fashioned ice cream.
The rebuilt dairy had a bottling plant that featured state-of-the-art equipment, and a talented crew of 13 men who were like family to Rich. In 1985 the milk producing plant was sold to Oakhurst, but retained the Smiley name. Rich proudly served as the director of the Maine Milk Commission, an organization of dairy farmers commissioned to make decisions for the dairy industry and to regulate price setting.
Rich loved business and entrepreneurship, and found many ways to engage in this during his life in Central Maine. He started and ran Smiley's Restaurant from 1986 to 1991. He developed Country Acres, a housing development on Smiley Family property that he prized as a location for "peaceful living." He also participated as a member of the Winslow Industrial Park Corporation that developed many projects including industrial space on the Heywood Road in Winslow that now houses Johnny's Selected Seeds.
Throughout his life, Rich was active in many community organizations. He was a member of the Winslow Congregational Church, U.C.C. He was baptized there as a child, and joined as a member at age fifteen. He served as a deacon, trustee, and choir member. He was an active participant in both the Men's Club and the Kum Double Club. During his tenure as a trustee, he oversaw many projects including acquiring the old Winslow Town Office for the church. He was a fifty-five year member of the Masons and a 15-year member of the Kiwanis Club.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beverly, after 47 years of marriage; his daughter Joyce Ellen Smiley Smith; his son Frederick Richard Smiley; his parents Milton and Florence; sisters Virginia Gordon, Priscilla McKallip, Pauline Smiley and Nancy Smiley; and three brothers-in-law.
Surviving are his sister Barbara Healy; his daughters Bethanie Smiley Jabar and husband George, and Katherine Smiley; son-in-law Gary Smith and wife Kristen Holm, daughter-in-law Pamela Smiley; 15 grandchildren: Rene, Jessica, Emily, Jillian, Sara, Evan, Drew, Regan, Mallory, Justine, Michael, Hannah, Roy, Abby and Clifford; and eight great-grandchildren: Eliott, Nora, Marlon, Atlas, Hudson, Finnleigh, Brecken, and Palmer.
His family sends their deepest thanks to the wonderful staff at Mount Saint Joseph's in Waterville for providing such good care in the last years of Richard's life.
A celebration of Richard's life will take place at the Winslow Congregational Church on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at 11 a.m. His committal will be at a later date and he will be placed in the Smiley Family Plot in Howard Cemetery, Winslow.2. Obit: WINSLOW -- Frederick Richard Smiley, 53, of Winslow, passed away peacefully in Waterville Dec. 30, 2009, surrounded by his loving family after a truly remarkable battle with a longtime illness.
