Born in Lawrence Station, NB, she was the daughter of the late Robert B. and Kitty-Jean (Stirling) Lindsay. Pearl was the youngest of ten and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was self-employed as a hairdresser for most of her life and enjoyed all crafts, quilting, embroidery and family time was very important, especially time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. WILDER -- Robert W. Sterling, 71, died Sunday at Alice Peck Day Hospital in Lebanon, N.H. He was bom Sept. 28, 1926, in Westfield, Mass., son of Edwin Nelson Sterling and Marion Dyer (Turner) Sterling. Mr. Sterling graduated from Everett High School in Everett, Mass., in 1944, and later from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He was a Unitarian-Universalist Minister in Maine, Massachusetts and in the New York area. For the past 11 years, he worked at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. In the past, Mr. Sterling was active as a leader in both the Cub Scout and Boy Scout organizations. Survivors include his wife, Catherine M. Sterling of Wilder; two sons, David Sterling of Lakeland, Fla., and Craig Sterling of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Barbara Sterling of Norwich; and a grandson. WAITSFIELD, Dec. 14 - Rev. M. C. Mays, 63, pastor of the Waitsfield Federated Church for the last three years, died this morning at 8 in Heaton Hospital in Montpelier. He suffered a coronary thrombosis a week ago. He was born in Massies Mills, Va. Feb. 19, 1891, son of Robert B. and Anne Kyle Mays. Previous to his Waitsfield pastor ship, he served as pastor in Wells River, at Jeffersonville, Danville Londonderry and Bridgewater. He was a member of the Waitsfield Lodges of Odd Fellows and Masons, Waitsfield Post American Legion and the Warren Grange. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Olive Snow Mays, four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Catherine) Sterling of Central Square, N.Y., Mrs. Fred (Nancy) LaShane of Santa Paula, Calif., Miss Priscilla Mays, a student at UVM, and Miss Margaret Mays, living at home, two grandsons, Philip and David LaShane; one brother, Rev. Mrs. Mays taught school in Sharon and Bridgewater Center. She also worked for Robert F. Lewis Inc. in Woodstock. She was a member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church. Educated at New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing and Boston University, Catherine was a Registered Nurse who worked in a variety of settings including the Unirondack Camp in Lowville, NY, Plummer Memorial Hospital in Dexter, ME and the Hanover Terrace Nursing Home in Hanover, NH. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Rev. Robert W. Sterling, a brother Frederick Mays, sisters Nancy LeShane Weisbaum and Priscilla Mays, and nephews Philip Le Shane and Peter Le Shane. Catherine is survived by her sister Margaret Mays of Chapel Hill, NC, son David Sterling and his wife Karen of Agawam, MA, son Craig Sterling of Wilder, VT, daughter Barbara Sterling of Wilder, VT, grandson Alexander Sterling of Leominster, MA and nephew David Le Shane of Colorado Springs, CO. As the daughter of a Congregational minister, she grew up in several towns in Vermont before graduating from the Wells River, VT High School. As the wife of an Unitarian Universalist minister, she lived in Hornell, Central Square, Little Falls, and Southold in New York State, West Upton, MA and Dexter, ME. Catherine spent many summers and other good times in Bridgewater, VT at the homes of her Snow family grandparents and then her mother. For the last 31 years, she lived in Wilder, VT. She avidly followed the ups and downs of the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots. A skilled knitter, she loved to make caps for newborns. He died Wednesday in Symmes Hospital in Arlington after a brief illness. A pharmacist by training, Mr. Moore owned Moore's Pharmacy in Oak Square, Brighton, for 46 years. He was an honorary director of the Greater Boston Bank, formerly the Brighton Co-operative Bank, and a longtime member of Faneuil Congregational Church in Brighton. Born in Malden, he was a 1929 graduate of Harvard College and a 26-year resident of Lexington. He leaves two sons, James W. Jr. of Essex Junction, Vt., and Richard E. Graduated from Brown University in 1885, he taught schools at New Lebanon. N. Y, and Woodbury, Conn, prior to his appointment as high school principal in North Brookfield, a position he held from 1893 until 1898. From 1899 to 1903 he served as superintendent of schools in Princeton, Westminster and Sterling. He was then appointed superintendent of East Bridgewater schools. During his first years there he was also superintendent for West Bridge-water and Raynham. He was a past president of the Plymouth County Teachers Association, past secretary for the Hopkin-ton Grange and former member of the Hopkinton Finance Committee. He also served as deacon of the East Bridgewater Congregational Church. He leaves two sons, Harold of Wellesley, and Edgar of Walpole; three daughters, Mrs. J. Winston Moore of Brighton, Julia of Durham, N. C, and Ruth of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Laura (Miller) died last June. Mrs. Moore was bom in Brighton on Sept. 9, 1905, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Conway) Paquette. She married Montgomery D. Moore, who predeceased her. Survivors include a son, Montgomery L. She was named Woman of the Year by the Police Athletic League in Elizabeth in 1966 for her volunteer work for many organizations including the PAL, Shriners, the American Red Cross and the United Fund Organization. Born in Natick, Mass., Mrs. Arvelo lived in Elizabeth before moving to Brick 35 years ago. He was an active participant in anything that was community based, he was co-founder with his wife of Ocean Inc. He was involved in the Head-start Program of Parkertown, N.J.
He was extremely talented in creating Native American jewelry, and sponsoring many native American events. He was well known and vocal of Native rights, history and all things to make Native American lives and issues better. He was the founder and president of the New Jersey Native American Association, which was founded for the health and well-being of all under privileged people. He was an active participant in the Governors Interstate Indian Council. He was also a participant and published author with the New Jersey Ethnic Experience, which is in the Library of Congress. He was an avid collector of stamps, coins, knives and all Native Artifacts. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife Diane M. Carroll moved to Bedford from Somerville in 1924 when he was 9 years old and remained a resident thereafter. He and his wife, the late Grace Dunham, opened Dunham's Bookstore in 1960 at 34 South Road and a few years later moved the business to The Great Road location, operating until 2000. He was 85 years old when he closed the store but he continued to buy and sell books for the remaining 12 years of his life. He is the beloved father of Allan R. Dunham and his wife Marie of Pepperell and Rev. Dr. Lorrie Dunham of Bedford. He is also survived by six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard L. 2. Obit: Roger F. Dunham, 87, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his home after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Beverly (Hammond) Dunham. He was born in Boston on June 12, 1921, the son of the late Luther H. and Florence M. (Griffith) Dunham. A lifelong Bedford resident, Mr. Dunham attended Lexington High School and was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Bedford. Mr. Dunham enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October of 1942 and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in September of 1945. While serving in the Pacific Theater, he completed 61 combat missions as a turret gunner with the 417th bomber group. After his military discharge, he worked as a machinist at Crowell Tube Company in Lexington for 20 years and retired in 1985 from Millipore Corporation. Throughout his life, he enjoyed the outdoors and had many interests and hobbies. He will be fondly remembered by many Bedford residents as the "berry man" for the many seasons he sold fresh strawberries and blueberries from his home. He also was an avid reader and collector of books and antiques. In addition to his wife, of 61 years, he is survived by three children, Beryl Gavin and her husband, Bob, of Windham, N.H., Lance Dunham and his wife, Lorraine, of Billerica, and Gail Murphy and her husband, Brian, of Pepperell; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carroll Dunham of Bedford, and Richard Dunham of Lunenburg; a sister, Carolyn Hicks of Chicago, Ill. Beverly H. Dunham, 83, died at her home in the care of her loving family on Saturday, February 19, 2011, following a brief illness. Mrs. Dunham was born in Medford on October 20, 1927, the daughter of the late Edgar J. and Mildred (Hollien) Hammond. She was raised on a farm in Brookline, NH, where she lived for several years, before moving to Lexington, MA. She was a member of the Class of 1945 at Lexington High School, and following her graduation, she attended Tufts University as a language major for 2 years. In 1947, she married Roger F. Dunham and moved to Bedford. Here they raised their three children and enjoyed a full life with many activities and friends. After sharing 62 happy years together, Roger died in April of 2009. While her children where in school, Mrs. Dunham worked part-time at Bedford Farms after its opening in 1952. She also waitressed at the Bedford Inn and Bedford Bowladrome before beginning her career in the banking industry. Mrs. Dunham began as a teller at the Arlington Five Cents Savings Bank and retired 23 years later as an assistant branch manager at the Cambridge Savings Bank. One month after her retirement, she became an administrative assistant at A.W. Clifford Realtors, and later Coldwell-Banker Real Estate, until its closing in 2006. She then went to work for the Bedford Council on Aging and served as the treasurer of the Friends of the Council on Aging for the past 12 years. She had many hobbies that she enjoyed, including baking, reading, knitting, crocheting, gardening, making jams and jellies, and playing the piano. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Bedford, where she was involved in baking pies for the church fairs and helping out with the collation committee. She was the loving mother of Beryl Gavin and her husband, Bob of Windham, NH, Lance Dunham and his wife, Lorraine of Billerica, and Gail Murphy and her husband, Brian of Pepperell, devoted grandmother of Dawn, Jeffrey, Gregory, Daniel, Lindsay, Erin and the late Julie Beth Michaud, and dear great-grandmother of Corinne, Carter, Jackson, Logan, Amber and Charlotte. She was also the sister of Edgar Hammond and Ann White and the late Nelson and David Hammond. 4. Obit: Gertrude Annie Converse, 97, of Phoenix, NY passed away on Thursday Sept. 21, 2017 in Syracuse. Born in Boston, MA on Nov. 28, 1919 to her late parents, Walter G. and Ethel (Bigelow) Crawford. Attended Boston schools, graduating from Dorchester
High School, class of 1936. Gert began working in a laundry; Walter Baker Chocolate Co.; Sears Roebuck & Co., and S. A. Woods Machine Co. as a bookeeper. Married on April 3, 1943 to Frederick M. (Pete) Converse. She was predeceased byhim on Dec. 2, 2009.
Gert leaves one son, Frederick P. (Chris) Converse; three grandchildren Nancy (Thomas) Johnson, Susan Peters, and Frederick L. (Sabrina) Converse; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; all of Phoenix; and four step-grandchildren.
Served as Past Noble Grand of Azar Rebekah Lodge # 27, Mattapan, MA a 54 year member. Living in Springfield, MA until 1963 when they moved to Clay, NY. A member of PhoenixLioness Club 1974 serving as secretary and then president.
Received Lioness of the Year-1975 from the Lions Club for her involvement in the Horseshow.
In 1981 when Pete retired, they moved to Hinsdale, MA, their summer home since 1946. Transferred her Lioness membership to Hinsdale holding serveral positions. She was heavily involved with Hinsdale-Peru Sr. Citizens, Hinsdale C.O.A, a 23 year secretary for Skyview Grove Assoc. at Lake Ashmere, receiving an award for service.
In 1995 Gert joined the new Lions Club which included women receiving the 1998-99 Lion of the Year Award and the Charles J. DeAngelus Fellowship Award for Emergency Sight & Hearing Treatment Memorial Foundation. She worked Bingo as well and attended 13 Lions International events one in Taiwan.
Once coming back to Phoenix in 2004, became active in the Phoenix Lions Club as membership chairwoman and worked on all projects up to a week ago.
Visiting hours are on Monday Sept. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday the 26 th from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, 431 Main St., Phoenix. - Lester F. Converse of 79 Vermont St. died suddenly Wednesday. He was born and lived on Vermont St. for 69 years. He was active in the Boy Scout movement for 48 years and had served as scoutmaster and spent a summer helping to build Camp Sherman. He served as a cook at the camp for several summers. He had been skipper of the Sea Scout Ship 2 of the Forest Park section from 1931 until his death and had received the Silver Beaver award. He was self-employed. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Margaret (Martin) Converse, and a twin sister, Mrs. Laura M. Knights, all at home; three sons, Lt. Comdr. Justin C. Converse, USN, of Coronado, Cal., Frederic M. Converse of this city and Leonard M. Converse of Syracuse, N. Y.; and three grandsons. The funeral will be held at Byron's funeral home Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. John S. Scott, Jr., of All Saints Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemtery. In 1960, he suffered a massive heart attack and sold the business to his partner. In 1961, he moved to Clay, NY where he worked in management for several movers. He joined the Phoenix, NY Lions Club and became very active. He held many offices and served as president for two terms. Pete secured the Grange Hall and was purchased by the Lions Club. He was founder of the Phoenix Lions Annual Horseshow. He retired in 1981 and moved to Hinsdale, MA, where he had maintained a summer residence since 1946. Pete transferred to the Hinsdale Lions Club. A four-term president, additional offices held, receiving the Melvin Jones award Charles De Angelos Fellowship, an award for Emergency Sight Seeing and Hearing, and the International Presidents award. Pete planted the seed to secure a grange building for the Hinsdale Lions Club as well. Serving as district deputy governor, district secretary, he coordinated the C.O.A., and became first president. Working through the Dept. of Elder Affairs office, he secured the nutrition lunches and food distribution for the Sr. Citizens Club of Hinsdale and Peru, MA. A night watchman at Country Curtains, Lenox, MA. Pete was a member of Hilltown C.O.A's; Berkshire Housing Authority as the Hinsdale representative; past president Skyview Grove Assoc., of Lake Ashmere; a volunteer driver for the Lions and the Red Cross, receiving the Red Cross award for taking patients during 1986-87 to and from Boston over 50,000 total miles for their medical needs.
