1. Daughter of Byron William Robinson and Zeletta "Lettie" Marie Smith.
- CAPTAIN OF INDUSTRY, BYRON W. ROBINSON, DIES IN HIS PRIME
Head of Akron's Chamber of Commerce and of a Leading Banking Institution Passes Away
Developed With, and Was a Part of Akron's Great Clay Product Industry, Now Comprising Nine Large Plants -- Man of Great Business Capacity and Valuable to Society.
Byron W. Robinson, aged 48. died at Lakeside hospital. Cleveland, at 2:25 Wednesday afternoon, following a relapse in his condition the day before. He was conscious until a short time before he died. With him were his wife, his sister, Mrs. Frank Adams, and his brother, Russell Robinson, besides Dr. C. F. Hoover, the hospital physician in charge. News of his death was received with the most profound regret. The last reports from Mr. Robinson were that his condition was improving. Following the operation by. Dr. Fred Gushing of Johns Hopkins university on Tuesday, December 22. he seemed to be growing. better and his relatives even expected that he would soon be able to leave the hospital. Monday night be was more restless than usual and Tuesday morning began to suffer from a headache which gradually grew worse as his bloodf pressure went up. It had been varying from 200 to 210, but mounted to 235 during Tuesday. It continued to go up through th night and Wednesday morning reached 300. During the afternoon Tuesday the disease began to affect his digestive system and he vomited several times. Wednesday morning doctors saw that nothing more could be done for nim and members of the family were summoned. His condition kept growing worse until he passed away.
Death Came Rapidly. Though his death had been looked for sooner or later, it came with unexpected rapidity. It would be hard to say how; long the disease, arteriosclerosis, had been doing its work. It was not discovered until Mr. Robinson went to the Battle Creek sanitarium early in December, believing that his depression was due to overwork and need of a rest. He went to Lakeside hospital for special treatment and was obliged to take to his bed immediately. Mrs. Robinson is bearing up well under the shock of the calamity and returned to Akron with H. B. Manton early Wednesday evening. Mrs. Frank Adams and Russell Robinson, sister and brother of the deceased, returned with the body by train at 10 o'clock. It was taken to the Robinson home, Buchtel avenue and Cotter street. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the house. The service at the Robinson vault in Glendale will be private.. All of the plants of the Robinson Clay Product company will be closed. Judge D. A. Doyle, vice president of the Akron Chamber of Commerce, has called a meeting of the directors of the organization for 4 o'clock Thursday when resolutions will be adopted and arrangements will be made for attending the funeral. All clearing house banks will closest 1 o'clock Saturday. Members expect to attend the funeral in a body. Dr. H. W. Lowry will have charge of the funeral services. The more complete arrangements are published elsewhere. Byron Robinson Is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Zeletta M. Smith of East Liverpool, whom he married in 1893; six children, Helen. Paul, William, Stewart. Ruth and Zeletta, the oldest of whom, Helen, has been attending school in Cleveland, tho others living at home; his brother, Russell L., a superintendent in the Robinson company; his sister, Mrs. Frank Adams of this city, and a number of cousins and other relatives in the Manton. Whitmore and Henry Robinson families. ; Great Loss to City. Mr. Robinson's death, coming at the pinnacle of his business success and just at the time when he was preparing to give his services to the public, was especially untimely. He was living In the most active and useful part of his life, and two years ago the death of Henry Robinson, his uncle, opened to him the position at the head of the world-famed clay industry. At the same time he was made president of the Second National bank. He built a house, one of the finest mansions in the city, and had just begun to enjoy the fruits of his life's work. When O. C. Barber resigned as president of the Akron Chamber of Commerce in November, Mr. Robinson's name was proposed as his successor. It met with enthusiastic approval of the directors, and his election as president followed. He entered on his work with a will and a deep interest in the success of the chamber, but had presided at only one directors meeting, and had not yet had time to make his appointments. Solid Business Man. Mr. Robinson was one of the solid men of the community. He was an Akron man in every sense. He inherited a natural aptitude for business, good judgment, and a straightforward, broad-minded method of dealing with other men. His application and interest in his work enabled him to rise rapidly from the position of bookkeeper to the presidency of the firm. His sound business judgment also fitted him admirably for the position at the head of the bank. His whole interest was in his business and his family, and he was little known to the public. He was an elder and trustee in tha First Presbyterian church, and with Henry Robinson and H. B. Manton presented the parsonage to the church and contributed the greater part of the fund for the erection of the new edifice on East Market street he mingled incidentally in social life, and was a member of the Portage Country club. He belonged to no fraternal orders. Byron Robinson was born in Akron, April 25, 1860. He graduated from the Akron High school in 1877 and entered Oberlin college. He left his studies after a snort time to enter the office of his father, William Robinson. An account of his business career cIoseIy involves the development of the Robinson-Clay Product company. In the directors' room In the office of the company hang the portraits of the five founders of the industry -- Thomas, Williams and Henry Robinson, brothers, and James B. Manton and Richard Whitmore, brothers-in-law of the Robinsons. Though Henry Robinson and James B.
