2. Obit: Sylvia Coombs Unglesby
PORTLAND – Sylvia Coombs Unglesby, 81, of Portland, died May 12, 2021, with her son and daughter by her side at The Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores in Scarborough.
Sylvia was born Nov. 6, 1939 in Portland, the daughter of the late Stella and David Erickson. She graduated from Deering High School in 1957. Her brother, Roger Erickson and sister, Lena Lathrop predeceased her.
On August 26, 1961, she married Robert E. Coombs. Sylvia and Bob were introduced to each other by her sister, and they fell in love and settled in Portland where they raised their children. They enjoyed hosting holidays for family and friends. There was always too much food on Christmas Eve, and anyone and everyone was invited. Sylvia loved to travel, while Bob enjoyed being at home, but she eventually convinced him to take a trip to Finland with her, and the next thing she knew, he had planned trips all over the world. He predeceased her very suddenly in 1994.
Sylvia graduated from Gorham State Teachers College with a B.S. and went on to get her master’s in early childhood education at University of Maine Orono. She taught 40 years and four months with most of those years in 2nd grade at Harrison Lyseth Elementary School in Portland.
In 1998, Sylvia was awarded the Early Elementary Teacher of the Year Award from the Southern Maine Association for Education of Young Children. She always said that her greatest career accomplishment was seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they understood what she was teaching them.
Sylvia loved to travel with her sister and best friend, Lena Lathrop. It was on one of those trips, to Alaska, that she met Charles W. Unglesby. She retired to be with him and to travel. They were married on Nov. 16, 2002, and his family welcomed her. When they were not traveling, they spent winters in South Carolina and summers in Maine. Charles predeceased her in 2017.
During her retirement Sylvia learned how to quilt and crochet, which would have made her mother proud. She also volunteered at a respite care program for people with Alzheimer’s disease, volunteered in kindergarten classes, and taught English to adults.
Sylvia said her proudest moments were seeing her children graduate with undergraduate and graduate degrees. However, that changed when she became a grandmother to five of the best little people she could have ever met. Grandma’s house was a place for them to all gather, and where cousins became best friends. She loved teaching them, reading to them, and seeing them play together. She also attended numerous ball games, dance recitals, concerts, or any other event that her grandkids were in. If she went to an event for one grandchild, then she made sure she was at one for each of them.
Sylvia was very proud of her Finnish Heritage and enjoyed visiting the Finnish Heritage House in Thomaston. She would always quote a verse from the poem by Maya Angelou called Human Family, “We seek success in Finland, are born and die in Maine. In minor ways we differ, in major we’re the same.”
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Melissa-Jo Coombs of South Portland, daughter and son-in-law, Robyn (Coombs) and Norman K. Berry Jr of South Portland, daughter Senja St. John of Maine; grandchildren, Matthew Berry, Maegan Berry, Ella Coombs, Anna Coombs, and Robby Coombs, all of South Portland; six nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
A huge thank you to all of the staff at Holbrook Health Center for providing the highest quality care, keeping her safe, and for loving her everyday when we couldn’t be there during the past year.

2. Obit:
BATH, N.H., PRESQUE ISLE, and HOULTON – My mother, Mary Lowina Dionne Badger, Minnie, 92, died peacefully on Aug. 28, 2004, at her residence at Madigan Estates in Houlton. She was born April 14, 1912, in Island Pond, Brighton, Vt., the same day the titanic sank. Her parents were Amanda Castonguay Dionne and Francis Dionne. Mother, the last of her generation was a very strong woman, who took on tremendous responsibilities as a teenager, raising her two young sisters and brother after the death of their mother. She did this while attending high school and having all household responsibilities. When her grandfather was struck by an intoxicated driver in front of her house she rushed out and held him in her arms while he died. Later that evening she washed and dressed him for the viewing at her house. She was but 17 years old. During World War II, she was a supervisor at the defense plant and after the war returned to being a housewife. Later she became the postmaster of the Bath, New Hampshire post office and retired in 1974. She traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, which gave her great pleasure. In 1985, she moved to Presque Isle, to be closer to her family. For the past three years she resided at Madigan Estates in Houlton. Mother was a tiny woman who wouldn’t allow anything to defeat or keep her down. No matter what happened she saw it in a positive light. She overcame tremendous adversity in her early years losing close friends to epidemics and the flu breakout of 1918-1920, and being a young teenager with full responsibility of raising her younger sisters and brother. She was born into an outdoors family and never hesitated in taking me hunting and fishing when I was to young to go alone, picking wild berries with me, playing ball or teaching me how to cook. She took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren, John II and Amanda, grow to adults and teaching them French. The arrival of her great-granddaughter was a special delight. She is survived by her only child, John D. Badger and his wife, Mary Jo Badger; grandson, John D. Badger II and his wife, Jessica Faupel Badger; great-granddaughter, Lauren Margaret Badger of Germantown, Md.; and granddaughter, Amanda Catherine Badger of Douglas, Queensland, Australia. She was predeceased by her husband, Vale D. Badger; sisters, Pauline Dionne Wheeler, Madeline Dionne Bragdon; and brother Joseph Dionne Young; half sisters, Albina Beaulieu McKelvey, Agnes Beaulieu Parent, Irene Beaulieu Bishop; half brother, Clovis Beaulieu; step- sister, Alice Dionne; and stepbrother, Henry Dionne. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Houlton with the Rev. Eddy Morin celebrant. Friends may call from 9:15 until time of service, at the church. Interment will take place next to my father, Vale in Bath, N.H., at the Bath Village Cemetery 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004. Harrison married 1 Dorothea Elizabeth Quimby in 1945 in Stoughton, Norfolk Co., MA. Dorothea was born on 28 Mar 1925 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. She died on 22 Sep 2014 in West Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA.

2. Obit: Dorothea Elizabeth Howland of West Bridgewater passed away suddenly September 22, 2014, in Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. She loved life and enjoyed 89 years of it. Dorothea was born in Boston, March 28, 1925, daughter of the late Alice F. (Chadbourne) and Alfred Quimby. Mrs. Howland was raised and educated in Randolph, graduating from Stetson High School. Her niece Tracey had recently obtained a copy of Dots yearbook and Dot fondly recalled her teen years participating in school plays and as a member of the basketball team. On her sixteenth birthday, she had her first date with Harrison C. Howland Jr. of Stoughton. Their love affair blossomed long distance throughout the war years. Dot worked at Randolph Ammunitions; her team was awarded a production award. Harry proposed in a WWII vmail and they were wed within days of Harrys safe return from Europe. Their first home, that Harry built, was on Prospect St. in Stoughton. Then in 1976 they relocated to Prospect St. in West Bridgewater. Dot was primarily a homemaker and mother, interspersed with a few part time jobs taken whenever she wanted to purchase a piece of furniture not in the family budget. Dots greatest interest was in her family and friends. She was always up to date on what was happening with everyone she loved; sharing her wisdom and good humor with all in person, by phone, by cards and letters, and even the use of her iPad (email) and Skype. Her greatest gift to her children was the fine example of her loving marriage to Harry, with whom she recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Harrison; her children and their spouses, Jay and Ingrid Howland, Jon and Sandy Howland, Janis and Gary Erickson, Jill and Bob Wallace, Jeff and Dawn Howland, Jerry and Denise Howland and James "Jamie" Howland; her seventeen grandchildren, Joy, Amy, Drew, Jayson, Amanda, Betsy, Emily, Chris, Kristen, Justin, Ashleigh, Caitlin, Colby, Ryan, Melanie, Monica, Reid; and her ten great-grandchildren, Kevin, Charlotte, Nina, Max, Charlie, Brooke, Luisa, Cole, Maddy, and Cameron.
