6. Obit: Rev. Joel T. Pederson
June 13, 1920 - February 1, 2008
It was with much joy John and Tillie Pederson welcomed another bouncing boy to their family. Howard and Alvin welcomed their brother as well. He was called Joel which meant "Jehovah is God." Because it was their custom the parents dedicated Joel to their Lord and Savior even before he was born. His little sister Anna would come later.
Growing up on a farm in Evansville, Minnesota, Joel had plenty of time to think and think and pray he did. At age 12 he was concerned about his soul and walking home from school one day, he was convicted by his sin and knelt by the side of the road and told Jesus he was sorry for his sin and asked Him to be His Savior. From then on a favorite verse was "He that hath the Son hath the Life!" And what a life it was!
At age 14 his brother Howard's wife died after only 3 months of marriage. At the funeral the hymn, ˜Does Jesus care" was sung. He thought in his heart, I'd like to be the kind of person that helps people know Jesus does care.
At age 18 he headed down to Minneapolis with $20.00 in his pocket. During the day he went to Dunwoody Industrial Institute and night he went to Lutheran Bible Institute. He then married Elin Linnea Greenquist. They would have 5 children, Miriam, Ruth, Tom, Rachel and Elisabeth. World War II interrupted his schooling and family life as he enlisted into the Navy.
After the war was ended he went to Bethany College in Lindsborg Kansas, during that time he started a student radio program, The Voice of Lutheran Youth. Then it was on to Luther Seminary and being a student Pastor at Walhalla, North Dakota and also Clam Falls Wisconsin. He went on to accept a Call to Walhalla, North Dakota where he also pioneered a Church in Morden Canada. From Walhalla he went to Enderlin, North Dakota, Mount Vernon, South Dakota, Windom, Minnesota and his final parish call to McIntosh, Minnesota.
In 1967, troubled at the direction the youth and others were going he founded The Outreach Inc Ministries. Under this auspice, The Outreach Training School was started where students took a three year course to become Christian workers. The Ministry branched out to include The Area Outreach a Ministry to help those in physical as well as spiritual needs.
In 1985 he married a former student and friend, Sandra Lauderback. In spite of a large age difference this was truly a marriage made in Heaven. They worked hard and long together to reach people as they are, where they are. In 1997 they moved to Rochester, Minnesota. Joel received care at Maple Manor from May 2007 until his death.
This was a warm hearted Pastor and Soul winner. Words cannot begin to express how he will be missed by his wife. However, he is rejoicing in Heaven and meeting again with Mother and Dad, brothers Howard and Alvin, sister Anna, daughter Rachel and others. It was his heart desire that the Outreach Inc Ministries could continue with Sandra as director. Therefore memorials are preferred to be given to the Outreach Inc Ministries. Blessed be his memory.
