16. 1977: Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Martin honoured on their 60th wedding anniversary
The spacious home of Mr. and Mrs. Burl Eldridge and family in Ayer's Cliff was the scene for a delightful family party in honour of the later's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Martin's 60th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday evening, February 12th, given by their son-in-law and daughter, Alvin and Pauline Butler of Oshawa Ontario. Sandra Eldridge pinned a corsage of red roses on her grandmother and Debbie Butler attached a white carnation boutonnierre to her grandfather's lapel as the happy couple arrived at the dinner hour. The tables were set in the shape of a capital "I" with Mr. and Mrs. Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Butler at the head table. The gracious hostess and her daughter, Vicki Eldridge had done themselves proud with both Valentine and wedding motifs in their red and white decor. This was carried through to the white linen with red place mats, red and white candles alternating on all tables and continuing to red roses in milk glass vases which were gifts to the bride and groom of sixty years from friends and neighbours and the great grandchildren.
A delicious turkey dinner was in store for all, with wine and all the trimmings including the wedding cake. This was actually two cakes, one was in the shape of a six (6) while the other formed a zero (0) placed side by side on a mirror decorated in white with red roses. The celebrants made the initial cut while cameras flashed in the hope of bringing back this happy time at a later date. Mr. Eldridge asked the blessing prior to the sumptuous meal and Mr. Dale Butler proposed a toast to his grandparents before the serving of the cake and coffee, responded to by the honoured couple.
At intervals during the meal members of the family presented skits of their family life over the years. Mrs. Wanda McKenzie (a granddaughter) read a resume which she had composed to quite some length of some of the things she could remember of their happy childhood centered around the farm on Brown's Hill and summer vacations there. It was an amusing and lively story, raising laughter, but also tears.
Miss Vicki Eldridge, first great grandchild presented the happy couple of the sixty years with a not-so-short poem that she had written of the happenings before her time and since, also amid laughter and tears. Mrs. Glenys Miller, a niece, read a congratulatory ode of her own composition depicting the sixty years along life's way. The evening was spent visiting while friends dropped in to congratulate Doug and Verlie and to wish them many more years of happiness. Many packages and lovely cards were opened and passed for viewing for which the happy couple expressed their appreciation. Mr. Gary Butler thanked the Eldridges on behalf of all the family for opening their home on this very special occasion and thanked his grandparents for their part in molding the family into the present happy bond of togetherness.
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Martin, nee Verlie Sutton were married on Brown's Hill on Frebruary 14th., 1917 and have lived in the Ayer's Cliff area throughout their lives. To them was born one daughter, Pauline, who grew up to marry Alvin Butler also of Brown's Hill, they now reside in Oshawa, Ontario. Doug and Verlie have five grandchildren and six great grandchildren scattered from Ayer's Cliff to Kamloops, B.C.

Mrs. Minnie Whipple, Rock Island, one of three of Mr. Martin's living sisters was in attendance to enjoy this unique family milestone. Other guests came from Waterville, South Barnston, Rock Island, Derby Line, Vt. and the Ayer's Cliff area. (Stanstead Journal, Mar. 3 1977, p. 1)

Wallace MacRae, formerly of Lingwick Road, to whom reference is made in the Record on Wednesday, June 27th. The young Canadian soldier especially request that the Record may be sent him regularly, that he may keep in touch with news from the home land. (Sherbrooke Daily Record, June 30, 1917, p. 2)

10. FLOWERS FROM “NO MAN’S LAND.”
Mrs. Carroll Hodges has lately received a letter from her husband, who has been in trench warfare at the front for several months, that very heavy storms of lightning and thunder are now being experienced. The young private, who states that he is at present enjoying extremely good health, encloses with his letter a few specimens of wildflowers which he had gathered in “No Man’s Land.” Some of these are like the old-fashioned blossom known here as the “Bachelor Button,” and one the splendid, useless poppy which in happier times bloomed so profusely on Belgium’s soil, but now is rarely found. 1. Your Gram got married to your grandfather, Howard, an unbelievably handsome man as you well know, they actually got married from Zia Beuna's and Uncle Bill Giadone's house. The reason for this was that my Nonno, Adolfo, (your Gram's father), thought your Gram was too young to get married and wanted her to wait a bit. Being as strong willed as we know she was, she decided to marry anyway against his wishes. Since she could'nt marry from her father's house, she got married from Zia Beuna's house. Nonno(Adolfo) forbade anyone from the family to go. Uncle Rudy went anyway and got quite a beating when he got home. (L)

10. 1929; "Bullet in Hand 40 Years, Elmer S. Cox of Burchard Learnes Shot Is Still Lodged In Flesh. Table Rock, Neb. -- Forty years ago Elmer S. Cox of Burchard accidentally shot himself in the right hand with a .22 caliber revolver. The bullet entered the palm and when a doctor was unable to locate it he decided it had deflected and had passed out by the side of a finger. The wound healed without complications. Last week in Dubois while Cox was helping push a car out of a ditch, his right hand was severely squeezed and a lump appeared on the back of the member. Thinking that he had broken a bone he had it X-rayed. The picture showed that the forty year old shot was still lodged there. It will be removed as soon as condition of the hand permits." 1. Daughter of Johannes "John" Anderson and Serine "Sarah" Myrwold. They were from Norway.
- Killed himself
Last Sunday evening Corner Grinnell and Sheriff Blexrud were called hurriedly to Fountain.
John Anderson a resident of that place, had ended his life with a 22 caliber rifle, and it was so evidently a case of suicide that no inquest was deemed necessary. The facts, as gleaned by a Times reporter, appeared to be these: John Anderson, somewhat under the influence of liquor, came home about five o'clock and told his wife who was resting on a lounge, feeling somewhat indisposed, that he was going to kill her and the children, giving them six hours in which to
live. Alarmed at this threat Mrs. Anderson hurriedly arose and went to a neighbor, sending word
to the two children, who were absent at the time, not to go home. This was the situation for an hour or more when the son went over to the house to investigate and while looking through a window saw his father's prostrate form on the floor. A hurried examination showed that he was dead, while a bullet hole above the temple left no doubt as to the manner of death. The unfortunate man was addicted to drink and had been posted for some time. It is not thought that
he could purchase liquor in the saloons, but there are always human vampires who will furnish the stuff to unfortunates who cannot resist the temptation and access to nearby saloons made this nefarious work easy. It is fortunate that the community was not shocked with a tripple murder as well as a suicide. (Preston Times, Dec. 18, 1912)

2. "H. A. Combs was fomerly actively and successfully identified with the agricultural interests of Henry county for many years, owning a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Osco township, but in January 1909, he put aside the active work of the fields and has since made his home on Washington street in the village of Osco. His birth occurred in Osco township, this county, on the 17th of September, 1868, his parents being A.J. and Louise (Ringold) Combs, the former a native of Chillicothe, Ohio, and the latter of Pennsylvania. The year 1866 witnessed the arrival of A.J. Combs in Henry county, this state, and here he carried on general agricultural pursuits until called to his final rest in February, 1897, his remains being interred in Osco township. His widow still survives and now makes her home in Cambridge, Illinois. Mr. Combs of this review is the eldest of three children, his brothers being as follows: Edward, a resident of Osco township, and Joseph, living in Cambridge township. H.A. Combs obtained his education in the country schools and after putting aside his text-books continued to assist his father in the work of the home farm until he hed attained his majority and was married. He was afterward engaged in the operation of a rented farm in Osco township for five and a half years, on the expiration of which period he purchased a tract of one hundred and sixty acres in that township, to the cultivation and improvement of which he devoted his time and energies until January, 1909. He then left the farm, which, however, is still in his possession, and took up his abode in the village of Osco, purchasing a commodious and attractive residence on Washington street. He is an expert machinist and has a shop on his home place, where he repairs engines, does plumbing and gas-pipe work, sets up windmills, pumps, etc. Alert, energentic and enterprising, he has won a gratifying measure of prosperity in the conduct of his interests and has long been numbered among the substantial and representative ctizens of the community.
In 1889 Mr. Combs was joined in wedlock to Miss Carrie Hartley, who was born in Grundy county, Illinois, on the 25th of October, 1870, her parents being J.S.E. and Rose (Butterfield) Hartley. The father, whose birth occurred in Malta, Morgan county, Ohio, in 1839, removed to Grundy county, Illinois, when a young man of twenty years and there turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. His wife, who was born in New Milford, Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, in 1847, passed away on the 28th of July, 1901, and lies buried in Gardner, Grundy county, this state. At the time of the Civil war J.S.E. Hartley enlisted for service in the Union army as a member of Company D, One Hundred and Twenty-seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry, with which he remained throughout the entire period of hostilities. He went with Sherman on the march to the sea and when the war ended received an honorable discharge, returning to Grundy county, where he still makes his home. His political allegiance is unfaltering given to the republican party.
Unto Mr. and Mrs. Combs have been born four children, as follows: Irene Louise, whose birth occurred September 6, 1890; Margaret Anna, who first opened her eyes to the light of day on the 1st of August, 1895; Hartley William, born April 7, 1904; Roy Henry, whose natal day was February 10, 1907. All of the children are natives of Osco township and are still under the parental roof.
Where national questions and issues are involved Mr. Combs votes for the men and measures of the republican party but at local elections casts an independant ballot, supporting the candidate whom he believes best qualified. He is now serving his third term in the postion of constable and is also special deputy game warden. Fraternally he is identified with the Odd Fellows, the Yeomen and Rebekah Lodge, his wife being also a member of the Episcopal church. Mr. Combs derives much pleasure from his automobile and, owing to his well directed and untiring industry in former years, is now enabled to enjoy many of the comforts and luxuries of life. He has always lived within the borders of this county and that his career has ever been an upright and honorable one is indicated by the fact that the associates of his boyhood and youth are still numbered among his stanchest friends." 3. ALPHA WEDDING
The home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Cox was the scene of a happy occasion Thanksgiving evening, about sixty invited guests having gathered to witness the marriage of their daughter Treva to Jno. E. Sparbel. At 7 p. m. the strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march played by Miss Fannie Henderson, a cousin of the bride, the bridal party entered the parlor and took their places under a canopy of asparagus sprengeri; behind them rose a pyramid of potted plants, making a beautiful background for the four composing the party. Rev. Mecham, of the Methodist church read the simple and impressive ceremony. Rev P. S. Heald of the Baptist church offered prayer, after which, congratulations were given the happy pair. The only attendant of the bride was her sister, Miss Daisie, while Mr. G. M. Besson, of West Branch, Iowa, served as best man. The bride was gowned in a beautiful white silk trimmed with an artistic profusion of tucks and flounces. In her hand she carried white roses. The bridesmaid was attired in a becoming, dress of dainty white lawn. After the ceremony appetizing refreshments were served in courses. There were many valuable and useful presents all of which would delight the heart of the most fastidious bride. Mr. and Mrs. Sparbel moved into the cottage just south of the bank where they will be at home to their friends after Jan. 1st 1902. These young people are too well known to need any words of commendation. Their many friends extend through the Times their very best wishes and are glad that they will make their home in Alpha. Notes:
1. When the family lived in Illinois, he enjoyed visiting with his uncle Ernst in Iowa. He and his family spent the winter of 1925-26 in Florida where Bill celebrated his 21st birthday. In 1927 he met Devier Schaffer in Ludington at an air show. Devier was a barnstormer, selling Piper Cubs. He needed a place to stay in Ludington and Bill volunteered that Devier could stay with him. They became friends and Devier offered Bill a job to assist him in barnstorming. So Bill agreed. They would fly to a town and buzz the town doing loops, immelmans, barrel rolls, etc., then land the plane in some field. Everyone in town would flock to see the plane. Then Bill would sell tickets for rides ($5 ea.) and Devier would take the people for rides in the plane. Bill said it was hard work because $5 was a high price in those days and not many people had that much money to spare. When he married his first wife Laura they eloped to Angola, Indiana because Michigan required medical tests and they didn't want their marriage to be discovered. So they went to Toledo, got married in Angola, then went on to Indianapolis and then to Florida for their honeymoon. The real reason they went out of state was because Laura worked for the State of Michigan and in those days, a woman could not be married and work for the State. She and Warren maintained secrecy of their marriage until Laura retired. He lived with Laura's family on their 160 acre farm north of Ludington for quite some time.
Warren once told a story about having a job for Hatch Trucking driving a truck from Grand Rapids, Michigan and Lansing, Michigan to Cleveland, Toledo or wherever the company needed him. It was a canvas covered truck filled with cigarettes. Unknown to him, thieves jumped off a highway overpass onto the truck and threw out all the cigarettes. When he got to Cleveland the truck was empty.
He worked most of his career as an engineer on the freighters that sailed back and forth across Lake Michigan (usually from Ludington to Milwaukee or Manatuwk, Wisconsin). Warren worked on only three ships his entire career, they were the "22", the Flint, and the Spartan. These ships ran all year long. He started working on them in 1939 and worked for nearly 30 years. He said he only got seasick on his first trip. He started as a "wiper" That was a job where "you had a pail and scrub brush and wiped everything to keep it clean." Then he was promoted to greasing shafts which had to be done every 3-4 minutes. You could tell when they needed grease by feeling that the shafts started to get hot. Then you gave them more grease. Later he was promoted to coal passer. This was the person that got the coal from the bunker and brought it to the fireman. All the ships he worked on burned coal and they would require 5-8 train car loads of coal at one time. This amount would last for 3-4 days. Later he was promoted from coal passer to Water Tender, then to Oiler, and finally to Jr. Engineer. At each promotion he had to study and pass an examination administered by the Coast Guard. It took a crew of 78 to run these ships in three shifts. The shifts were Midnight to 4 AM, 4AM-8AM, and 8AM-noon then repeated in the afternoon. They worked 4 hours on, eight off, and then four on again.
He had three tattoos all done in Detroit. His first was of a girl on his left forearm, second was of an eagle on his right forearm and finally on his upper right arm was his name.
Warren met his second wife Evie Pedersen at Laura's family farm because Evie was married to a brother of Laura. Almost as soon as Laura died, Evie's husband died. Evie subsequently married Bill. Evie would become upset when someone misspelled the name Pedersen. This was a Danish name and she said that misspelling it Peterson was Swedish and she wasn't a Swede.
Warren lived for several years after his retirement at a small cottage on a lake at Freemont, Mich. with his third wife Betty Juliano. After Betty died he spent the last years of his life living with his sister, Helen Maxwell, in Tempe, Arizona. [Bill U.]

3. SMITH - COX
Amid a profusion of Marechal-Niel and bridal roses intertwined With clinging vines, and the slightly colored autumn leaves, potted plants, and large calla lilies, which were delightfully fragrant and which enhanced the loveliness of the mid-day wedding, Miss Wilma Summers Smith and Mr. T. Lyle Cox, of Chicago, were united in wedlock at 12:30 Wednesday at the home of the "bride's mother, Mrs. Lydia J. Smith, 334 North Seventh. The beautiful ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. K. Thompson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, before a company of forty friends and relatives. The yellow and white motif of roses and other bridal flowers were effectively used in the bridal procession as well as in the beautifully decorated rooms. At exactly 12:30, from a side room Rev. Mr. Thompson entered the ceremonial room, as Miss Dorothy Hare played softly, on the piano, Mendelssohn's beautiful wedding march. He was followed by Lydia J. Harn, the pretty three-year-old niece of the bride, who carried the ring in a gracefully trimmed basket of roses and lilies tied with yellow and white maline. Next in the procession was the bride's sister. Miss Edna E. Smith, as the maid of honor, and then entered the bride and groom. Miss Hare wore a smart costume of white lace with yellow and white trimmings and the little flower and ring bearer was clad in a dainty dress of white trimmed with baby Iris blue and big butterfly ribbon bows of yellow. She made a beautiful and charming little picture when she slowly marched to the altar carrying her lovely flower basket. The maid of honor was gowned in a becomingly pretty creation of white lace draped over yellow silk with yellow satin ribbon trimmings and she carried an arm bouquet of Marechal-Niel roses and ferns tied with yellow and white satin ribbons. The charming young bride, who has been the recipient of many beautiful gifts in the coming weeks since her engagement was announced, was very pretty and girlish in her exquisite bridal gown of Mr. Cox And his bride left Muskogee | on the afternoon Flyer for Chicago where the groom is prominently connected with the postal service and where they will make their home. Mrs. Cox's going away costume was a handsome suit of popular blackberry shaded chiffon broadcloth, trimmed with velvet and braid of the same shade. Her hat was of velvet, in a harmonizing shade trimmed with a single large plume. (Muskogee Times-Democrat, Oct. 6, 1915, p. 5)
