Notes:
1. In 1947 in North Bay, Ontario, Cedric Summers, an ex WWII RCAF Air Frame Engineer and avid fisherman couldn’t find a canoe that suited his needs so he decided to build one. Having worked with lightweight aluminum in his profession of building airplanes for the airforce, there was only one material to use - Lightweight Aluminum.
This was the beginning of the journey for the now legendary Sportspal Canoe. The light weight Sportsmen’s Canoe has gone on to be used around the world by thousands of enthusiasts. Originally built in 12’ and 14’ Pointed models in two colours, there are now 8 models with five colour options. (Sportspal Canoes advertisement)2. ‘You can’t sink a Sportspal’
Heritage Fair project highlights boy's family history
By GORD YOUNG The Nugget
Researching a school heritage fair project was a family affair for 11-year-old Cedric Summers.
The youngster spent hours at his grandparents' kitchen table poring over family photos and listening to stories about his great-grandfather, for whom he is named, in order to put together a project focusing on a piece of Canadian history — the Sportspal canoe.
"I didn't know the stories. I didn't know what it was made from. I didn't know how it was painted," said Summers, who was only aware when he started the project that the iconic watercraft was a part of his great-grandfather's legacy.
Few people haven't seen or used a Sportspal, especially in Northern Ontario.
I didn't know the stories. I didn't know what it was made from. I didn't know how it was painted. — Cedric Summers
Whether it's cutting through the waters of a quiet lake, strapped to the roof of a car, or pulled onto a sandy beach on a hot summer day, the Sportspal is instantly recognizable with its logo depicting a native man wearing a feathered head dress and its common paint finish resembling birch bark.
Summers' great-grandfather built the first model in the 1960s in the basement of a Hammond Street home in North Bay. And it wasn't long afterward that he started manufacturing the canoes.
His son Eric Summers, who was a teenager at the time, said 5,000 Sportspals were built at his family's plant on Dudley Avenue over 12 years until the family sold the business.
Although it has changed hands several times since then and the original design has been modified, Sportspal is still based in North Bay and is sold worldwide.
Summers, a Grade 6 student at St. Luke Catholic School, will display his project Friday in the Education Centre gymnasium at Nipissing University during the sixth annual North Bay Regional Heritage Fair.
He is among 100 finalists in the event, which includes public viewing between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., followed by various student workshops. Participants are in Grades 4 to 9 from both English and French boards.
Summers' project includes a display featuring information and photographs of the Sportspal and his great-grandfather.
One photo in particular shows a large group at the start of canoe race heading off into Lake Nipissing at the mouth of LaVase River.
Not a canoe built for speed, Sportspals apparently didn't do very well at the onset of the race. But, the wind soon picked up and Nipissing turned rough. The Sportspals are said to be the only canoes to finish the race.
"You can't sink a Sportspal," said Summers, explaining the lightweight crafts are equipped with "ethafoam" strips along the sides and elsewhere for stability.
But his project is as much about his great-grandfather as the canoe that the man created.
"He loved the outdoors," said Summers, noting there was no holidaying in Mexico for his great-grandfather. "Vacations were on a lake with a canoe."

3. Charming Home Wedding on Friday
Miss Genevieve Beryl Summers and Mr. Robt. Barringer Married
A lovely wedding ceremony took place Friday evening at 48 Fifth avenue, when Miss Genevieve Beryl Summers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Summers, was united in marriage to Mr. Robert Barringer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Barringer, of Beverly Hills, California. The Rev. J. Gilmour Smith officiated. The house was decorated in ferns, spirea, delphinium, gypsophilia and mock-orange blossoms and made a perfect setting for the ceremony. The bride's mother played the wedding music and Miss Beulah Wood sang, "I Love You Truly," during the signing of the register. The bride looked lovely in an ensemble of navy sheer suit with a shoulder-length veil. She carried an arm bouquet of white roses, white gladioli and bouvardia. Mrs. Del Villano, sister of the bride, was matron-of-honor, and wore a redingote of rose and blue crepe and a white turban. She carried a bouquet of pink roses and forget-me-nots. Mr. Andrew Farrell attended the groom. After the ceremony a buffet supper and reception were held at the Timmins Golf Club where the bride's mother received wearing a redingote of beige and white crepe with matching accessories and a corsage of violas. During the reception Mr. R. P. Kinkle proposed the toast to the bride and groom. The bridal couple left after the reception for a trip to the Muskoka district. For traveling the bride chose an ensemble of white gabardine with navy sheer blouse, navy turban and accessories. She wore a corsage of white orchids. Upon their return the bridal couple will reside in Timmins. Mrs. Winford Summers, of Powasan, sister-in-law of the bride was a guest at the wedding. (The Porcupine Advance, July 21, 1941, p. 2)4. Notes:
1. Leo Del Villano was a colourful former Mayor of Timmins. He was the first man to be mayor who was born in Timmins, the last mayor for the Town of Timmins and the first mayor for the City of Timmins. He passed away Sept. 22, 1992.Timmins has known its fair share of characters and local celebrities – Princess Maggie, Tommy Jack, Sandy McIntyre, Ellen Terry, Max Ryan, Johnny Jones – I could go on, but I won’t.
One person, however, stands out for many of us native Timminites – depending on who you speak to, this man was flamboyant, a rogue, a good politician, a man of the people, a true Northerner, a friend.
Leo Del Villano died 20 years ago today, and his impact on the community has not diminished in the least.
Leo was born in Timmins on Dec. 23, 1913, on Tamarack St., in a house owned by the Hollinger Mine, the son of immigrants who came north looking for a new life.
The family took advantage of the cheap lots being sold on Third Avenue, and bought a building next to what was to become Blahey’s Store. They enjoyed the neighbourhood, but sold that property and moved to Moneta in 1919. There they raised chickens, six cows, rabbits and pigeons.
As a young man, Leo worked as an underground miner, a mailman and a liquor salesman, but his true passion was politics.
In 1946, Leo campaigned for a seat on the Timmins Town Council, and was elected – he was 33 years old. He was the first elected official for Timmins who was actually born in the community.
He sat on council from 1946 to 1951, and 1953 to 1955.
In 1956, he was elected Mayor, a position he would hold through to 1959, and also from 1961 to 1966 and 1969 to 1976.
He would return to serve on council from 1982 to 1988.
During his political career, Leo worked very hard for the community. Because of his (and council’s) hard work, we have arenas, parks and playgrounds, as well as the Golden Manor.
He worked tirelessly for the construction and expansion of the Timmins Airport, and lobbied for the implementation of the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act to help secure Northern economies.
Leo was mayor when amalgamation was unleashed on the communities in 1973-1974, creating the largest city in Canada (and the world’s largest gold mining community in those years).
Leo was proud to say that he was the first mayor born in Timmins, the last mayor for the Town of Timmins and the first mayor for the City of Timmins.
Aside from all of that, Leo was the quintessential showman.
He knew how to shrewdly get his point across, and certainly was no wallflower!
According to a local yarn, Leo had an unfortunate incident with a lawnmower that led to the following campaign slogan for the 1972 election: “Minus a Tooth, Minus a Toe – It’s still Leo Del Villano!” (The slogan appeared on a sign on Rolly Richer’s truck, making it very visible around town).
Leo understood the electorate and understood what it took to put a small gold mining community on the map.
Perhaps one of the best known stories around about Leo was the “bear hunt for the Queen.”
According to a newspaper article printed in the Montreal Gazette in 1959, Leo brought six bear skins to Montreal. The skins were destined for no less of an address than Buckingham Palace.
The idea started when Leo read an article describing the hats used by the Palace Guard as “mangy,” as most of them were well over 50 years old.
Leo believed that Timmins could come to Her Majesty’s rescue and organized a proper bear hunt, which was held in March of that year.
Things did not start off very well as there was a strong protest from people who thought the hunt was inhumane, but Leo managed to pull it off.
While attending the International Conference of Municipal Financial Officers at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel (in Montreal), the then Timmins mayor made arrangements to deliver some of the pelts to Lt.-Col. Carmichael of the British Ministry of Supply, who gratefully accepted them on behalf of the Queen (eventually 50 skins were shipped off to the U.K.).
Brigadeer General the Honourable M. Fitzalan Howard of the Palace Guard wrote a letter of thanks to the town saying “I don’t know how many bears you have in Northern Ontario, but when you hear that it takes one bear to make one cap, you will understand how difficult supply of skins is becoming!”
In his most unconventional way, Leo had placed Timmins on the international stage (and, I imagine, high jacked most of the publicity at the Conference).
The story quickly made headlines around the world.
Leo soon appeared on CBC television’s Front Page Challenge as a mystery guest.
During the Queen’s visit to Canada in 1959, she invited Leo and his wife Mildred to dine with her (an invitation they accepted – and would it not have been grand to be a fly on the wall at that affair!)
I would like to thank former Mayor Vic Power for the use of his eulogy for Leo (and the idea for this article).
Leo the Lion will always be one of this community’s great characters!

Our lives go on without you,
But nothing is the same,
We have to hide our heartache,
When someone speaks your name.
Sad are the hearts that loved you,
Silent the tears that fall,
Living our lives without you,
Is the hardest part of all,
You did so many things for us,
Your heart was kind and true,
And when we needed someone,
We could always count on you,
The special years will not return,
When we were all together,
But with the love within our hearts,
You will walk with us forever.Love, Wanda and family

10. She remembers war effort
EXCITEMENT, Danger, Responsibility, War-torn Britain meant all that and more to one of Terrace's female war veterans. For 81-year-old Morag Theresa Hodges, Remembrance Day brings back memories of her life as a Corporal in the Royal Air Force, commanding a balloon defence site in the south of England during the Blitz. Back then she was Morag MacTavish -- born near Inverness, Scotland, the daughter of an estate manager.
After the death of her father in 1914, her family suffered through hard times. At the age of 30, she volunteered for the service and joined the R.A.F. After a training stint at Sutton Coldfield Birmingham England, she was sent to Sheffield the site of her first balloon posting. MacTavish and her group of women were given the responsibility of protecting civilians and taking charge of the balloon sites. The sites were set up at all major cities to defend against bombing runs by German warplanes. The huge balloons were filled with hydrogen and were tethered by cables, held aloft at high altitudes. To enemy bombardiers, the balloons were a dangerous obstacle; a mid-air collision with the cables tethering one spelled a quick trip to the ground. The balloon-lofted defence cables tinged most major cities and military or industrial targets, slowing down enemy bombers and giving British fiak gunners more time to shoot them down. The women in charge of the balloons were well paid. Their work was important, difficult, dangerous -- and at times very exciting. They took pride in the fact they had proven themselves capable of handling jobs usually performed by men. After eight months of balloon service, MacTavish went to London for more training and testing, before being made a corporal. She was then sent back to Newcastle and served there through until 1944. - "In the middle of the war Cpl. MacTavish became Cpl. Hedges when she met and married her husband -- Wayne Benjamin Hodges -- in 1942. He had joined the Canadian Army's forestry division and was stationed in Scotland. In 1946 the couple crossed the Atlantic to live in Quebec with their two sons, Duncan and Floyd. They later moved to B.C., living first in Penticton before coming to Terrace in 1952. Both families have a long wartime history. Grandpa Hodges was a '°batman" and was at the side of George Randolph Pearkes when he was hit by shrapnel in World War I. Awarded the Victoria Cross for his service, Pearkes later became Lieutenant-Governor of B.C.<photo>
