On the first inst., at his late residence in Barnston, Deacon John Sutton, one of the earliest settlers of the township. He was born in England in 1793, came to Canada in 1807, married at 20, and settled on the same farm on which he died. He early embraced the Christian religion, and was one of its most staunch supporters, and Temperance one of its strongest advocates, he never allowed any beverage stronger than water pass his lips. His last illness was short but exceedingly painful, he was calm, and resigned, retaining his consciousness to the last moment, showing to all around him his firm faith in God who doeth all things well. Bryan, of Hatley, and Mr. F. Bryan, of Way’s Mills, together with several nieces and nephews and other relatives. (Sept. 4, 1918)

1. Daniel is listed as son of Philpot Sutton in "Forest and Clearings", p. 335.

This seems very plausible that this could be his place of birth, and that Daniel and his family spent at least some time here. Of course this is a lead that must yet be followed.

5. ROCKFOKD REVEILLE
The Reveille was started at Nora Springs, Thursday, Feb. 5, 1874. The proprietors were H. Gage, "W. P. Gaylord and R. E. Robinson, the last two of whom acted as editors. It appeared as a four-page weekly, twenty-eight inches long, and eight columns to the page. It showed in its first number evidence of Mr. Gaylord's editorial ability, and the editorials were from the first spicy and vigorous. "We give a few extracts from Mr. Gaylord's salutatory. (p. 618)... "We propose to receive blows as well as give them, and our columns shall be ever free and our types ever ready to apologize or explain." .... (p. 619) Jan. 1, 1875, important changes were made in the management of the Reveille. The paper was removed to Rockford, and its name changed to the Rockford Reveille. R. E. Robinson was the publisher, and Gaylord & Robinson's names appeared as editors still. Mr. Robinson removed to Rockford with the paper, and edited the local columns, and Mr. Gaylord remained at Nora Springs, sending his editorials by mail each week. This removal to Rockford seemed to be the best thing, under the circumstances, as the Reveille had an active rival at Nora Springs, in the shape of the Floyd County Press, while Rockford, a place of about the same size and prospects as Nora Springs, had no paper at all, the Shell Rock Valley Guard having been discontinued. In April of the same year Captain Orlo H. Lyon, of Rockford, purchased a one-half interest in the Reveille, and his name appeared as one of the editors. In August, 1876, Mr. Robinson retired from the paper, having accepted a position in California. (p. 620, History of Floyd County, Iowa, Chicago, 1882)

Mr. Robinson is one of the best teachers in this county. By the by, speaking of Robinson reminds us that a gentleman who resides at North Bloomfield told us the other day that he doubted much whether Power would get a vote in that precinct. We hope his double will be verified.— North San Juan Times, August 4th.
Now tbe Robinson that has been employed to go into the High School at Nevada City, is not George E. Robinson the Republican nominee for County Superintendent. The man who goes into that Nevada City School is named R. E. Robinson and he is a fine teacher. We wonder that the Nevada transcript did not correct the Times in that matter. George E Robinson's friends should not try to get political capital by the appointment of R. E. Robinson. The two men are not relative at all. The gentleman who says that Frank Power will get no votes in North Bloomfield is about as badly mistaken as was the times editor when be announces that G. E. Robinson is to teach school in Nevada City. (Morning Union, Aug. 9, 1877)
8. The Weekly Herald.—The new newspaper candidate for public favor, issued at Nevada City on Tuesday, the Herald, is a handsome seven column paper, printed on new type, arranged with mechanical neatness. The proprietors are Gray, Davis and Herzinger, young men who learned their trade at that place. The editor is R. E. Robinson at present a teacher in the public schools, who has had previous Journalistic experience. The first number of the Herald gives most excellent promise for future ability and usefulness, as it is filled with interesting editorial and local news. In their salutatory the proprietors have this to say of the course that will be pursued by their paper. "In.politics the Herald will not be a partisan paper. It will claim the right of independence in the expression of its opinions upon all questions of public interest. It's sympathies are with every legitimate and well ordered movement looking toward social or political reform. It will advocate the overthrow of monopolies, the breaking up of corrupt rings, honest and competent representation, the amelioration of the condition of the working classes, and just and efficient measures for the protection of white labor. It will not lend its influence to the misguided policy of instigating and encouraging a quarrel between capital and labor. It will discountenance all attempts to promote discord and turmoil amongst the citizens of the commonwealth by intemperate utterances or violent acts. Its columns will always be open to those who desire to use them for the discussion of public matters, provided, however, that those privileges lie limited by such restrictions as prudent and fairness may render necessary.”
We extend a cordial welcome to the Herald, wishing the enterprising proprietors every success in the field of journalism. (Grass Valley Daily Union, May 9, 1878)

12. CALIFORNIA MINING TOWN NEWSPAPERS, 1850-1880
CALIFORNIA MINING TOWN EDITORS
Tri-Weekly Herald: 1878-? Publishers were J. B. Gray, E. A. Davis, H. L. Herzinger. Later it was edited by R. E. Robinson and D. Delim. The paper was devoted to mining news of Nevada County.
13. Newspaper Change
R. E. Robinson, for some time past a teacher in the public schools of Nevada City, has purchased the interest of E. A. Davis in the tri-weekly Herald of that place. Mr. Davis is in very poor health, and this is the reason of his retiring from the business. Mr. Robinson is spoken of as being a writer of ability, and will, no doubt, assist in making the Herald a live paper. The Republican wishes success to the new firm. (Truckee Republican, July 10, 1886)
14. Editor Robinson and his partner, Mr. Battey, will tomorrow begin the erection of a five-stamp mill on the Oro Fino. They will lose no time in completing this now needful adjunct to their property. The Oro Fino is no longer a "prospect." It has taken place among the first-class properties of the district. - [Nevada Transcript.
(Daily Alta California, April 18, 1887)
15. The Oro Fino
The Oro Fino mine is now owned entirely by E. E. Robinson, he having bought in all other interests. A five stamp mill (not a ten-stamp mill as stated heretofore), is being placed on the mine and will be ready for work in about two weeks. A large supply of ore has been taken out of this mine and is ready for crushing, The mine looks better thal ever before, and Mr. Robinson feels confident that he has a fortune.—Nevada Herald. (Morning Union, May 29, 1887)
16. The Oro Fino
A clean-up was made at the Oro Fino quartz mine Saturday, the returns from which were very satisfactory to the owner of the mine, Mr. R. E. Robinson. The mine continues to look well, the ledge holding its size and the general quality of the ore remaining the same. A few days since a thin streak of rich rock was encountered in one of the drifts. It overhangs the main ledge and is thought to be the leader of a rich pocket, as the ledges in that vicinity have all contained pockets. The shaft is down 225 feet. It will be sunk deeper before long and another level opened up. It is the opinion of miners that the Oro Fino has a bright future in store. —Nevada Herald.

17. NEVADA COUNTY MINERALS
A Grand Showing at the Mechanics' Institute Fair
The S. F. Alta, in the notes on the Mechanics' Institute Fair, now in progress at San Francisco, has this to say of the Nevada County Mineral Exhibit:
Nevada county has a very fine collection of ores on exhition, which ably sustains the reputation that the county enjoys, of being the richest mining district of the State.
...
It is rot every editor that owns a mine, but the editor of the Nevada City Herald, R. E. Robinson, does, and he hag sent to the Fair specimens from the Oro Fino mine. It takes a gold mine sometimes to run a newspaper.

18. Has Struck It
R. E. Robinson, late editor of the Nevada Herald, who is an indefatigable quartz prospector, is reported to have struck it rich up in Sierra county, in fact has the best prospect yet discovered in that quartz-ribbed region. He has disposed of an interest in his location to parties who will put up a tenstamp mill. (Morning Union, July 27, 1888)

28. FACTS CONCERNING LIFE OF R. E. ROBINSON
Referring to the life of R. E. Robinson, who died in Oroville Friday, the Oroville Register says:
"Mr. Robinson was over 62 years old at the time of his death. For almost a score of years he had lived in Oroville, and his familiar figure will be greatly missed, particularly around the courthouse, in which building he had his office. "He was born in Belfast, Ireland, but when a mere child his parents moved to Canada, locating near Quebec. There he was brought up until as a young man he made up his mind that he desired to go to college. he entered a Canadian university, and despite the fact that he was forced to work his way through the institution, he attained high honors in his classes, and graduated versed not only in the languages, but in mathematics and science as well. "While in college, Mr. Robinson met Miss Myra D. Sutton, and their acquaintanceship ripened into a more tender feeling. in 1869 they were married. Mr. Robinson was at that time coaching school. A year later he removed with his wife to Iowa, where he still followed his vocation as a teacher. Still later, in 1876, he removed to Nevada City, where he was elected justice of the peace, but resigned his position in order to devote all of his attention to mining. "From Nevada City, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson left for Sierra county, and located at Gibsonville. In 1890 he moved to Oroville. The next year he went to Gridley, where for four years he engaged in the practice of law, having just been admitted to practice. At the end of that time he returned to Oroville, where he had since made his home. "Mr. Robinson was known as one of the most competent judges of mining property in the northern part of the State, and during his residence in Oroville he was constantly called upon to inspect mining properties. He was a geologist of no mean ability, and a thorough metallurgist." (Chico Record, May 26, 1907, p. 4)
