His mother and father are buried in Bellows Cemetery, Stanstead Co., PQ., [ just outside of Barnston ]. John Bellows Sr. was one of the first pioneers to settle in the region. Born in Dalton , Massachusetts , John Bellows emigrated first, his wife Rachel and his son John Bellows Jr, Hancock, Vermont in 1788 where he was also a pioneer . It is then in 1801 he moved with his family in Barnston .

This church was organized Jan. 9, 1833. The honor under God, for this belongs to Deacon Bellows and Deacon J. Merriman. The names of those who banded themselves to-gether are Simeon White and wife, John Bellows and wife, Mrs. (Dr.) McKeech, and daughter, Mary Ann Fellows, Daniel Sutton and wife, John Sutton and wife, Grandma Sutton, John P. Sutton, James May, Joseph Parker and wife, Sally Parker, Alpheus Parker and Susan Crooker.
In June 1833, Deacon Bellows and Joshua Parker rode on horseback to St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to attend the Danville Association. There they succeeded in having the church recognized by and identified with that body. In 1835 they began like David to prepare material for a chapel, and like Israel’s king, they wished to have the best. Some with their own teams and sledges hauled granite from Barnston mountain for the foundation; others went to the woods and hewed out a frame from the finest pine. The lot was, by Deacon Cushing, deeded to the church for so long as it should exist as a Baptist cause.
In Aug., 1837 the building was completed and free of debt, was dedicated, amidst general rejoicing, to the worship of God only. Rev. Albin Sabin, D. D. preached the sermon from Ruth 1: 16 & 17.
The self sacrifice and determination in thus displayed in thus providing for the worship of God shows the sturdy christian manhood of those early disciples. They built wisely and well. Let us not be behind our fathers.

In Barnston August 21st, John Bellows, Esq. Mr. Bellows was born in the town of Dalton Mass., whence in 1801, at the age of 17, he came with his parents to the then new Township of Barnston. At manhood he, by his industry and savings, paid for and took a deed of a lot of land on which his father had previously located his family. By his good management he was able not only to support his parents in their old age, but to acquire property with which to do much good. He with others of the same spirit, laid the foundation of that thrift and prosperity now so manifest in that flourishing and enterprising township. Not in temporal things only, has he left a fair record. He early became a disciple of Jesus Christ; was a lover of good men, and he was among the first members who organized themselves into a Christian church in that township. He encouraged the preachers of the gospel, and aided in their support. Sojourners found a ready hospitality at his house and the cause of Christ abroad, as well as at home, found in him a willing supporter. Having lived about 68 years on the above named lot, holding fast still to the faith of the gospel, he died as above at the advanced age of 84 years, 11 months and 21 days. On the 23rd inst., his remains were followed_after a discourse by the Elder E. Mitchell from 2 Tim. Iv., 7,8- by a large gathering of mourners and neighbors to their last resting place in the family burying ground, on the same farm, and where lay the remains of his venerable parents, his first wife and his only son. Leaving a widow, a daughter and her husband and three grandchildren to mourn the separation. The memorial service at the Bellow’s homestead last Thursday, commemorated the settlement of the place by John Bellows 100 years ago, and consisted of thanksgiving for the noble lives of those departed and the decoration of their resting places in the family burying. “Aye call it holy” ground, the place where first they trod. [ The article discusses the origins and growth of the Eastern Townships Agricultural Association (E.T.A.A) and celebration of it's Diamond Jubilee. However, the forerunner to the E.T.A.A dates back to 1831 when the first agricultural society was formed in Sherbrooke. The first meeting was held at the home of Ezekiel Elliott in Lennoxville. Barnston, March 18. — (Special) — Mr. William Buckland, son of Mr. P. B. Buckland, has joined the McGill contingent and expects to go into special training at once in Montreal, and afterwards for a few weeks at Valcartier and sail for England early in the summer. William Buckland comes of fighting stock. The Bucklands of the old times were Loyalists. His great-grandfather, John Bellows, helped to capture Quebec under Wolfe and also fought at Gibraltar.
