3. 2003; NACHES -- Neither have held public office before, but both say they love their town and both want to run for Position 4 on the five- member Naches Town Council so they can make a contribution to the community.
Gayle I. Lloyd, 49, and Kenneth F. Kime, 64, are longtime residents of Naches who feel they can do a good job in the post being vacated by Steve Davidson, who chose not to run again.
The only other city post up for grabs is held by Mayor Charles Ross, who is running unopposed.
Kime, a 1958 graduate of Naches High School who managed grocery stores throughout Washington, Alaska and California before retiring two years ago, would like to see a more restrictive fireworks ordinance.
"I know a lot of people want fireworks, and that's fine -- the Lions Club sells fireworks and raises money that way," said Kime, adding that it's specifically buzz bombs, bottle rockets, and cannon balls that are purchased elsewhere that he dislikes.
"I'd like to make it a penalty to have those in your possession," said Kime, citing problems in his own neighborhood with young people who obtain those devices on the Yakama reservation, then shoot them off at home.
Lloyd has lived in Naches since 1975 and has been active in the community during that time.
"You name it, I've done it!" she said, particularly Naches Sportsmen's Days as part of Gamma Xi, a women's service sorority. "I've lived here all of my adult life and I want to be involved in the community."
As a council member, Lloyd said she hopes to help Naches grow: "It's a really nice little community, and I'd like to help the merchants -- get more of them in the downtown area."
Serving on the council will also give her more insight into the community, she said.
Kime, too, is high on Naches: "I really believe it's the best- kept little secret in the whole state."
Lloyd agreed: "I think it's a great experience living here," she said.
