David T. Johns Passes After Short Illness; Rites to Be Tuesday
David T. Johns, general agent the Tacific Mutual Life Insurance Company, died yesterday at the National Military Hospital after a brief illness. He was 42 years of age. Born in Provo, Utah, Johns did missionary work in New fork for the Latter Day Saints' Church early in his youth. He entered the World War and emerged with the rank of lieutenant. He had been affiliated with the Pacific Mutual Company eighteen years. He has been president of the Arnama Club, Army, Navy and Marine organization, for the past year. Johns leaves besides his widow, Mrs. Barbara A. Johns, three daughters, Emmy Lou, 15; Barbara Anna, 13, and Virginia, 11; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Johns of Provo; three brothers and a sister. He lived at 2363 Panorama Drive, La Crescenta. Funeral services have been tentatively planned for Tuesday from the Wilshire Latter Day Saints' Church. (Dec 1936)

- Weises Celebrate 50th Anniversary
A reception in the Alhambra American Legion Hall honored Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Weis on their 50th wedding anniversary. Their two sons and daughters-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. "Bill" Weis of Arcadia and Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Weis of San Gabriel, hosted the afternoon affair for 325 friends and relatives. The Weises were married March 3, 1919 in Santa Barbara. Mr. Weis came from Ohio as a child and grew up in Los Angeles. Loretta Weis, known as Lottie, is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Francois Crickelair of Los Angeles, the youngest of their seven children and their only child born in Los Angeles. Living in Highland Park until 1932. the Weises moved to a part of Rosemead which is now in the city ol San Gabriel. For many years Mr. Weis operated a service station at Valley Boulevard and Delia Street. For the 13 years prior to their retirement in 1964 they operated a paint store on Las Tunas Drive in Temple City. At present Mr. Weis is commander for the second time of the Alhambra American Legion, he served his first term in 1952-53. The 18th District of the American Legion was under his command in 1956. Belonging to the "First 500 of Los Angeles." which was the first California battalion called into active duty during World War I, Mr. Weis served in France as an artillery sergeant. Also active in the American Legion Auxiliary of Alhambra, Mrs. Weis was president 1957-58. Mr. Weis is a member of the San Gabriel Lodge. No. 546 A.F.&M. Al Malaikah Shrine Temple and the San Gabriel Valley Shrine Club which meets in Arcadia. He then moved to Portland, Oregon, and from 1984 to 1985, was in charge of the training program, including writing policy and procedure manuals for the food service department at Fairview. From 1986 to 1994, he served as director of food service, and clinical dietitian at Dammasch Hospital, where he provided nutritional support for the hospital's inpatient population. He was very active in the musical community in Portland, as he had been throughout his college years. He farmed a fruit ranch in Selah for several years until purchasing a ranch in the Harrah area. They farmed the ranch for 56 years, raising sugar beets, corn and dairy cows. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lydia of Harrah; two sons, Frank of Galt, Calif., and Rodney of Harrah; a sister, Mamie Dodge of Selah; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be noon-6 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Thursday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Chapel. A celebration of his life will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Harrah Grace Brethren Church and will conclude at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Born on November 8, 1934, in Yakima, Frank graduated from White Swan High School in 1952. After school, Frank worked in the woods in Glenwood, WA before moving to Orange County California in 1956 where he started his own business in commercial kitchen equipment sales and service. In 1971 Frank met Priscilla, the love of his life: they were married in 1972. After 40 years in business, Frank retired. His heart was always the farm, so they moved back home in 2003. Frank loved his flowers and raised peonies and irises on his place in Harrah.
Frank was preceded in death by his son, Steve Kern of Calif.; parents Lydia and Paul Kern; and brother Rodney.
Frank is survived by his wife Priscilla; sons Glenn of Portland, OR, Jon of Virginia, and Dan Kern of Calif.; daughter Kami Frasier of Calif.; grandchildren Heather and Chase of Portland, Christopher and Matthew and Brandon, Ryan, and Justin, all of Calif.
Frank's favorite thing to say was "Heaven's my home, I'm just here on a visit." His visit is over and he is gone back home. Frank will be missed so much as he was a special man with a big heart; he always treated everyone he ever met as if they were special.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. A Celebration of Frank's Life will also be held on Wednesday at 3:00 PM at Harrah Grace Brethren Church. Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors were entrusted with making arrangements. Don Roth, 86, passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Don was born in Toppenish on September 24, 1931 to David and Elizabeth Roth. After graduating from Toppenish High School in 1949, he joined the Navy from 1951-1956. Aboard the USS Hornet as an Airdale, also served on the USS Philippines Sea. Don earned 6 service metals during his term. Then in 1957 he married JoAnn Searle and together they raised 5 sons. He worked at Del Monte can plant as a coater operator until his retirement of 39 years. On September 8, 1981, Don and Colleen were united in marriage along with her 2 daughters and his 5 sons. They shared 36 years of marriage. In his earlier years Don’s passions were fishing and pheasant hunting with his sons. In his later years Don and Colleen loved traveling to Reno, Oregon beaches and the dog races. After retirement Don took up golfing with his best friend Gene Simmons. You could also find Don and Gene at one of their favorite places having a cold beer. Don also loved watching his westerns on tv and hanging out with his dog Smitty. The last few years you could find Don smoking fish for many of his friends. Don was a 50 year member of the American Legion and Toppenish Eagles.
Don is survived by his wife, Colleen Roth; sons, David (Denise) Roth, Dennis (Darcie) Roth, Daryl (J. Ruark) Roth, Glenn (Debbie) Kern; stepdaughters, Lisa Paxton, Lani (Darren) Thomas; brothers, Jerry (Joyce) Roth, Bill Roth; grandchildren, Heather, Chase, Patrick, Chelsey, Bailey, Tylor, Skylynn and Lacey; 10 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also left behind his neighbors and friend Efrin, Norma Silva and family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Elizabeth Roth; brother, Bob Roth; sister, Helen Niesz; and son, Darren Roth.
Don will be greatly missed, but will live on in our hearts and memories forever.
Memorial services for Don Roth will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church in Toppenish (61800 Hwy. 97 Frontage Road). A luncheon will follow. Arrangements in care of Valley Hills Funeral Home.
