Donna Marie (84) of Norwalk, California, passed away January 5, 2008. She was born December 9, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the youngest of seven children. She is survived by her daughter, Rita Barker; her sons, Scott and Larry; and 8 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her five brothers; her sister; her husband, Florian "Red" Christian; and sons, Wally and Lanny. Donna was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor. She will be greatly missed by all for her playful humor, her caring and helpful manner, and her practical nature. Kenneth Edward, the son of Herbert E. and Lyra Myrtle (Robinson) Dean, was born on June 17, 1927 in Faribault. Kenneth graduated from Faribault Senior High School in 1947. In high school, he was a member of the 1945 State Tournament basketball team. He left high school in 1945 to enlist in the Navy “Seabees” and was stationed in Guam. In 1946, he received an honorable discharge, and returned to Faribault to graduate from high school. He then entered trade school to become a bricklayer. Ken married Marian Helberg at St. John’s Church, Wheeling Township, on February 7, 1948. They raised two children, James Dean and Brenda Dean Thompson.
Ken and partners formed a masonry company in 1953, building homes, schools, and churches throughout southern Minnesota. He continued to work in the industry until his retirement in 1987. He enjoyed participating in and watching all kinds of sports, especially basketball and golf. He spent recent winters in Arizona. Ken was a member of St. Luke’s Church, American Legion Post 43, MNNDBAC Local #1, and the Faribault Golf and Country Club. Ken truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, who will miss him terribly. The family would like to thank Faribault Senior Living, Allina Hospice, and Dr. Mary Cameron for their loving care.
He is survived by his wife, Marian of Faribault; two children, Jim (and Linda) Dean of Faribault and Brenda (and Eric) Thompson of Minnetonka; four grandchildren, Andy Dean, Carrie (and Rob) Nelson, Erin (and Cody) Ayres, and Katie Thompson; three great grandchildren, Evie and Sophie Nelson and Ben Ayres. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Vera (and Joseph) Kausek; one sister-in-law, Elnora (and Walter) Meyer; along with aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins. Attaining the rank of captain, he was commanding officer of flight five, 830th medical air evacuation squadron which saw duty in the Pacific area. Barnes served his internship at Hackensack hospital, Hackensack, N. J. with his wife, two children, Jeffry, age five, and Jill, age 20 months, the doctor is residing at 826 E. Main street. With the arrival in Los Angeles of W. B. Fordyce, fomerly of Omaha, five generations of one family gathered for a grand reunion. Every one was there from baby to great-grandmother. Death Occurred Friday Morning Which Was Entirely Unexpected

J.W. Whipple is dead. Genial, big hearted "Bill" Whipple. who has become a familiar figure everyone in Wadena county during the past thirty-six years, passed to his eternal rest Friday morning, Feb 18th after a very brief illness, death being due to rheumatism of the heart. News of the calamity which had befallen this community spread with the rapidity of wildfire and struck its hearers with a force which rendered them momentarily speechless, unwilling to believe what their sense of hearing had confirmed. No one had been aware of his illness, but very few knew that he had not been enjoying his usual good health.
Mr. Whipple finished his day's work at Murray's Land Office, where he had toiled so faithfully and well for the past twenty years, and drove to his home in the outskirts of the city as usual that Thursday evening. He had complained once or twice during the day of the severity of rheumatism in his left shoulder which continued, apparently, even after he reached home that evening.
Bed time came and he found it impossible to sleep. He paced the floor the greater share of the night until exhaustion probably led him to lie down. Mrs. Whipple, also awake because of her husband's pain, soon heard him snoring as in a deep sleep. Alarmed at the peculiarity of that snore she went to investigate and found him breathing very heavy and hastily summoned a physician. Before his arrival however, Mr. Whipple was breathing his last, death ensuing at about five o'clock.
The funeral services were held the following Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Methodist church where friends by the hundreds had congregated to pay their last respects to the memory of their departed fellow-citizen.
Wadena county first knew J.W. Whipple as a lad of ten years when he accompanied his parents to this village thirty-six years ago to make their home on what is now the B.R. Boyer farm four and a half miles south of town.
Of excellent parentage James Whipple inherited those most commendable qualities to be found in man, honesty, modesty and a desire to number all with whom he came in contact as his friends. As he grew to manhood and his acquaintanceship widened he commanded and received the respect of all. The early death of his father brought added cares upon his young shoulders but he never faltered. At the age twenty-one he left the farm and in company with John Knight engaged in the drug store business in the Murray building now occupied by the billiard parlor. After two years in the drug business he became cashier of the Northern Pacific depot, which position he held until he went to work in the county treasurer's office. The election of Fred Boyer to the office automatically removed Mr. Whipple from that position and he entered Murray's Land Office to fill the vacancy by the election of Mr. Boyer as treasurer. Mount Vernon, Feb 15. -- Emma H. Whipple, 68, retired Mount Vernon school teacher, died February 11 at Richmond, Virginia, friends here were advised today. She had gone there to visit a son and also with the hopes of recovering from ailing health. Mrs. Whipple retired as a teacher about three years ago. She was a music instructor and was active in club work. Surviving relatives include two sons, Earle, of Alaska, and W. J. of Virginia, and a daughter, Alice, of Cashmere. Funeral services were held in Virginia. (Bellingham, Feb. 1944)Word has been received by friends here of the death of Mrs. Emma Whipple at Richmond, Va., on February 11. She and her husband lived in Wadena for many years. He was associated with the Murray Land Ofiice and she gave music lessons here.
The Whipples lived on a farm located on the south end of what is now Jefferson Street. Mr. Whipple died here in 1914 and in 1921, Mrs. Whipple left here with her five children. She attended the Bellingham school of music and taught normal until 1923 when when she moved to Mt. Vernon, Va., where she made her until last fall when she went to live with a son, Wilburn, J. Whipple at Roxbury, Va.
While in Wadena Mrs. Whipple played the organ in the Methodist church for many years. She also took the Wadena County exhibits to the state fair for several years and on one occasion won the state championship besides capturing many other prizes.
Mrs. Whipple was born in Greene, Iowa on September 1, 1876. She will be remembered by her love for music and her ability to develop talent in her pupils.
One daughter preceded her in death and another daughter, Alice Whipple, resides at Cashmere, Va. Besides the son in Virginia, she is survived by another son, Erle, of Pelican, Alaska, a granddaughter and grandson and her mother, Mrs. Minnie A. Douglas of Stanwood, Va.
Funeral services were held in Roxbury, Va., with cremation following and the ashes sent to the family vault here in Wadena. (Wadena, March 1944)2. Celebrating her 82nd birthday Friday, Mrs. Caroline Thompsen, 64 E. Burton ave., was to be honored by friends with an observance at her home. Born in Denmark in 1865, she came to the United States as a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ ot Latterday Saints and settled in Richmond, Cache county. She has resided in Salt Lake City the past 21 years. Her husband, James Thompsen, also from Denmark, died in Richmond in 1913. Sunnyside - Arthur E. "Art" Nixon, age 89, a lifetime Sunnyside resident died Wednesday January 3rd at his home in Sunnyside. Art Nixon waqs born November 27, 1900 at Sunnyside to Edward and Alice Nixon. He spent his early years and received his education in Sunnyside. On April 2, 1938 Miss Mabel Hansen and Art Nixon were married at Colfax, WA. Following their marriage they made their home in Sunnyside where Art was employed by the City of Sunnyside until he retired in 1967. Following his retirement he continued to make his home in Sunnyside until the time of his death. He was a member of the Sunnyside Moose Lodge. Arthur E. "Art" Nixon is survived by his wife, Mabel Nixon of Sunnyside; two sisters, Eleanor Hanson of Toppenish and Edith Hewitt of Kent, WA; and by a number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three sister-in-laws, Katie Smith of Sunnyside, Marie Hayes of Portland, Ore. and Mae Gulick of Moscow, Idaho. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lawrence Nixon. SUNNYSIDE -- Normally, volunteers with the Loving Sunnyside Initiative paint houses beige, brown or gray.
On Saturday, Mabel Nixon received a fresh coat of pink. "She's 99, she can get what she wants," said Leroy Werkhoven, one of the coordinators of the twice-yearly church-led effort to paint homes, clear weeds and generally spruce up the city.
The group, comprised mostly of congregation members of several Sunnyside churches, typically tackles six homes each round, just as it did Saturday morning. It has 35 houses under its belt after three years in operation, and will pull out the brushes and paint again in October. Nixon stood on the porch in her neighborhood of modest houses with peeling paint surrounded by patchy grass huddled near a convenience store. She watched as a team of young and old clad in bright green T-shirts made her home of 72 years gleam in a brief spell of morning sunshine. "Bless them, I think they're great," she said.
The group's leaders pick the houses during their routine bike rides through town. If they see a home in disrepair, they knock on the door. Mabel Nixon Stark, 99, a long-time Sunnyside resident, was reunited with her Heavenly Father and five sisters on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012. She was born March 17, 1912 in Mapleton, Iowa to Andrew and Stella (Jordan) Hanson.
Mabel graduated from Palouse High School in Palouse. Mabel later moved to Sunnyside. She met and later married Arthur Nixon in 1938 in Colfax and together they made their home in Sunnyside, until his passing in 1990. In 1994 she married Jay Stark in Moscow, Idaho and they together made their home in Sunnyside, until his passing in 1999. Mabel enjoyed art, spending time with her sisters and traveling. She was a former member of the First Christian Church and a current member of the Sunnyside Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Mabel is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Nixon and Jay Stark; her five sisters, Ruby Crooks, Nora Hacker, Marie Hayes, Mae Gulick and Katie C. Smith. Viewing and visitation will be held Monday Feb. 6, 2012, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Katie C. Smith, 93, a long-time Sunnyside resident, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, in Sunnyside. Katie was born May 23, 1913, in Sweet Grass, Mont., the daughter of Andrew and Stella (Jordan) Hansen. At a young age, she with her family moved to Palouse before moving to Sunnyside in 1926, where Katie completed her education. On July 24, 1934, she married Ike Smith in Palouse. Following their marriage, they made Sunnyside their home. Katie worked in fruit warehouses. Katie owned and operated Katie’s Beauty Salon in Sunnyside on Edison Avenue for many years.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and Sunnyside Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Katie enjoyed her work, people, collection of knick-knacks, traveling, celebrating Christmas and her dog, Joey. Katie is survived by her sister, Mabel Nixon Stark of Sunnyside; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ike Smith; and four sisters, Nora Hacker, Ruby Crooks, Marie Hayes and Mae Gulick. - Leon Hewitt, 74, a retired Bellevue real-estate operator, died Sunday at his home, 1653 92nd Av. N. E. Bellevue. Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock tomorrow in Green's Chapel of Flowers, Bellevue. Burial will be in Acacia. Mr. Hewitt was born at Ingersoll, Ont. He came to Seattle in 1916 and was Northwest sales manager for the Conklin Pen Co. from 1918 to 1933. Mr. Hewitt established his real-estate business in 1933. He founder of the Bellevue Lions Club. He was a past master of Lakeside Lodge No. 258, F. & A. M. under whose auspices funeral services will be held. He also was a founder of the Washington State Bank and an early proponent of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge. Surviving are three sons, Mitchell H. and Forde H. - Wauneta, a small town of some 700 residents, is located in southeast Chase County, sprawling on both sides of the Frenchman River where it curves from west to south.
On the west bank of the river, near a little waterfall, Wauneta's first settlers, George Rowley and his wife, built the first dwelling in 1875. It was a spacious seven-room soddie, with three bedrooms and board floors, and was the birthplace of Chase County's first white child, Earl Champion Rowley. Tragedy was to come to this family some time later when George was killed by marauding Cheyenne Indians when returning home from Ogallala with supplies.
An old-fashioned square piano was a cherished possession of Mrs.Rowley. Visitors to the Rowley home were treated to piano music and songs she sang for trappers, cow-boys, and other settlers in this lonely out-post.
A frequent request was for the Spanish love song "Juanita." When the town site was surveyed in 1887, the post office given the name Juanita, spelled "Wauneta," to distinguish it from the Nebraska town of Juniata in Adams County. Celia M. Harrison, 91, of Moses Lake and a former longtime Sunnyside resident passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, in Moses Lake. Celia was born Aug. 28, 1918 in Benton City to Erle Rowley and Camilla (Hoover) Rowley. She graduated from Kiona-Benton High School in 1936 and from Washington State College (WSU) in 1940 and had one year of graduate school in the field of social work.
Celia worked at the Benton County Welfare Office before her marriage to William H. Harrison in 1943. The couple moved to California and returned to Washington State in 1947. Celia volunteered as a home service worker for the Red Cross. Celia was a life member of United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and was president of United Methodist Women, member of AAUW, Chapter L PEO, Sun-wa Garden Club, Nouvella Club and Tops 522.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Glen) Uhlenkott of Moses Lake; granddaughters, Kristi (Alex) Bryant and Annette (Dan) Uhlenkott-Trippel; great-granddaughters, Annika Trippel and Grace Trippel; and two nieces, Carol Foulks and Nancy Stuller. Celia was preceded in death by her husband, William Harrison; her parents; one sister; and one brother.
Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, April 16, 2010, from 9 a.m. until noon followed by funeral service at 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery.

She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons, Ronald and Donald, 3 brothers, and 4 sisters. 2. Don Adams Car Victim In Germany
A Vancouver serviceman has been killed in Germany, his family has been notified. SP4 Donald Adams died as the result of a traffic accident Monday at Frankfurt, Germany. Details of the accident will be received later, relatives were informed. The body is being returned to Sumyside in Yakima County for funeral and burial there. Adams was bom on Oct 18, 1946, in Battle Ground and attended schools in Battle Ground and Vancouver as well as at Sunnyside He was living in the Vancouver area when be joined the Amy three years ago. He bad been in Germany about two years. Adams is survived by his father, John Adams of Battle Ground, mother, Mrs. Helen Laird of Sunnyside and a brother, Ronald Adams, stationed in Germany with the US Army. Pvt Willie E. Laird former Fort Collins man who was taken prisoner by the Germans during the Belgian Bulge battle last Dec. 21, has been liberated and returned to American control his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Voss of Battleground Wash., have been informed by the War department. A postcard from Mrs. Voss brought the information here today. He is the husband of Pvt Lois E. Graveside services for Willie Elliott Laird, 64, will be held at 10:90 am Wednesday in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. He died Sunday. He was born Aug 6, 1912, in Waco, Tex. Mr. Laird was a retired cook at the Quay restaurant. He had made his home at 2904 O St. Mr. Laird was a member of the American Legion Post 14 Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 791, Disabled American Veterans' life member and Ex-Prisoner of War Inc. Mr. Laird received a purple heart for wounds be received in Germany in World War II. He also was a prisoner of war. Survivors include brothers, Mack of Glendale, Tex. Pat of Tyler, Tex. and Dickie of Gladewater, Tex. and a sister Edle May Ward of Tyler, Tex. The Rev .Martin Larson will officiate at the graveside rites. YAKIMA - Harold G. Searle, 78, of Yakima, formerly of Toppenish passed away on Saturday, March 9, 1991, at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Yakima. He was born on February 14, 1913 in Sunnyside, the son of Charles Wilbur and Queen Genevieve (Gilbert) Searle. Harold attended schools in both Sunnyside and Granger. He enjoyed all sports in school. He then worked for various farms throughout the valley during the depression. He married Annabelle Neal on August 18, 1933 in Seattle. Harold and Annabelle made their home in Toppenish. Harold began work for the Del Monte Corporation as a night watchman in 1941. He retired with a 35 year pin as a foreman in the agricultural division in 1976. His work took him through much of the valley and the basin, from which he developed many friendships. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities. He taught his grandchildren to appreciate the art and enjoyment of hunting. Harold was the backbone of the Searle family. He was a lot of fun; had a gruff exterior but was actually very tender hearted. Harold was a proud man who was highly thought of in his community. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and his community. Harold is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Roberta) Crain and Mrs. Joann Roth, both of Portland; two brothers, Donald Searle of Sunnyside and George Searle of Mt. Vernon, Wa; four sisters, Helen Laird and Dorothy Bracelin, both of Sunnyside, Harriette Deyo of Yakima and Alice Suhadolnik of Proser; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle, on May 18, 1975, and also by two grandchildren. Funeral services for Harold will be held Friday, March 15, at 11 a.m. in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Vault interment and concluding services will be in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. 5. Silver Anniversary Reception Honors Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Deyo
A family reception and pot-luck dinner was held Sunday, April 16, at the IOOF Hall in Sunnyside honoring Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Deyo of Toppenish on their 25th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Deyo is the former Harriett Searle of Sunnyside. The main table was decorated with a three-tiered wedding cake trimmed in pink and silver, a pink-bouquet of rose and pink candles. A sliver money tree on the table was presented to the honored couple. Approximately 50 attended the event. They included Mrs. Robert Caraway and son, Kevin, daughter of the Deyos, of Vancouver, Mrs. Edith Hewett of Seattle, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Searle, Mr. and Mrs. Don Rath and family, Douglas Deyo, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hansen all of Toppenish, Sally Labberton of Wapato. TOPPENISH - Harriett S. Deyo, 81, of Yakima, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, September 20, 1995. She passed away at the Valley Rehabilitation Center in Toppenish. Harriett was born on August 10, 1914 in Sunnyside, WA. The daughter of Wilbur and Queen (Gilbert) Searle. She attended schools in Sunnyside and graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1932. She married Gerald Deyo in Longview, WA. In April of 1935, and they resided in Sunnyside for a few years, before moving to Toppenish. While living in Sunnyside, Harriett worked for Haskins Variety Store. After moving to Toppenish, she worked as a retail clerk in what she called the “rag business”. She was employed by JC Penneys and Sol and Clara Kraff, who then owned Kraff’s Men’s Wear. She later became the owner of the Mode-O-Day Clothing Store in Toppenish and worked there until retiring to Yakima in the early 1970's. Harriett loved reading and working cross-word puzzles. She was a devoted grandmother and was always interested in what her grandchildren were doing. She kept in touch with cards and gifts, which she signed, "Love Grandmere". She is survived by her son, Doug and wife, Lana Deyo of Toppenish; her daughter, Judy and husband, Robert Caraway of Buena; five grandchildren, Kevin Caraway of Buena. Kris Coverdell of Toledo, Jay, Jeffrey and Robert Deyo of Toppenish; a special niece, Sally Labberton of Everett; a brother, George Searle of Mt. NASELLE, Wash. (AP) - A 49-year-old Toppenish man was killed and five persons injured Monday when two cars collided head-on about one mile east of here. The victim was Gerald Deyo.
