3. Robert Temple - NH man found dead on railroad tracks
Robert Temple, 51, of New Hope, was found dead shortly after midnight Oct. 22 on the Canadian Pacific Railways tracks in New Hope.
New Hope Police were called to the 8200 block of 54th Ave. N., a site 1,800 feet west of Winnetka Avenue, after the engineer of an eastbound train called to report a body on the tracks.
The 79-car train, which was carrying grain, was stopped before it reached the body. Police believe the man was hit and killed by an earlier train.
According to New Hope Police reports, several of Temples personal items were strewn up and down the tracks. A plastic bag containing sandwiches and another bag were found on the tracks.
Alcohol is suspected as a contributing cause, New Hope Police Captain Jim OMeara said. The officers did observe a strong odor of alcohol at the scene.
The death is being classified an accident, OMeara said, though the case is being investigated by officials from the Canadian Pacific Railways and the Hennepin County Medical Examiners Office.
Temple is survived by his mother, a brother, and six sisters. A memorial mass was Friday at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Anoka, Interment was at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery. (Sun Newspapers (St. Paul, MN) - Wednesday, October 31, 2001)
