3. Obit: James ˜Jim' Nolan, 83, passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was the eldest son of James and Mary (Frances) Nolan. He had a fun-filled, exciting childhood in San Francisco where he graduated from Lowell High School. After graduating from Dartmouth College, class of 1960, Jim continued his education at San Francisco State University before earning a Ph.D. in sociology from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. Most importantly, it was here that he met and married the love of his life, Sally Jo. They were lucky to have recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary together, a special milestone in which they shared a vow renewal ceremony.
After teaching at the University of Maine, Orono, for two years, Jim joined the sociology faculty at Norfolk State University in 1970. He taught undergraduate and graduate sociology and criminal justice during his 36 year career. He was chairman of the sociology department and director of the graduate criminal justice program when he retired. Jim's favorite parts of teaching were exchanging ideas with students and supporting them with reaching their goals.
Throughout the years Jim also volunteered with the Crime Prevention Steering Committee, League of Women Voters, and local Dartmouth Alumni Association.
Jim enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with his family. He had a zest for learning and appreciated experiencing different cultures. Jim's wit, humor, easygoing personality, and thoughtfulness will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His special bond with his grandson, Mason, will ensure his legacy lives on. Jim was predeceased by his parents, as well as by his brother, Daniel. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Sally Jo; daughter Kathleen Nolan; daughter Kara Nolan Raymundo, son-in-law Edgar Raymundo, and grandson Mason Raymundo; and a host of cousins, nieces, and loving friends. Jim and his family want to express their appreciation to the healthcare providers at DaVita, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, and Sentara Hospice for extending his time and quality of life during his final years.
Jim's immediate family will honor him in a small, private ceremony. Online memories and condolences may be shared with the family at Cremation Society of Virginia. (The Virginian-Pilot, Oct. 24, 2021)

1. OHSU Performs Bone Marrow Transplant No. 1,000 (June 8, 2005)
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Adult Bone Marrow Transplant program of the Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute has performed its 1,000th stem cell transplant for a 63-year-old patient from Bandon, Ore. Caring for patients who live 200 miles away reflects the program's broad reach across Oregon and southwest Washington, as well as the increasing number of older patients receiving transplants.
Daryl Barnes, who received his own cells back after chemotherapy, returned to his home in the southern Oregon coast two weeks after the transplant and mowed his lawn five weeks later. Such activity is possible when a patient's own stem cells are used.
However, in an "allogeneic" transplant that uses the cells of others, post-transplant care requires long term administration of medications by catheter and orally, while maintaining a protected environment to decrease the risk of infection. OHSU requires such transplant patients to be within 30 minutes of the hospital during the first 100 days.
As a result, Barnes' swift return home contrasts with the experience of Barbara Erickson, 53, Salem, who spent more than three months in an apartment near OHSU following her transplant in which she received bone marrow from a sibling in 1994.
Barnes is marking his own milestones in the short time since his transplant. Besides mowing and edging the lawn, Barnes is growing back his moustache, though he notes ruefully, "Now, it's mostly white." And he's just added lettuce back to his diet. "Nice to be able to have salad again," he says Barnes and his wife, Bonnie, have lived in Bandon since 1964. He travels to Coos Bay for regular checkups with his oncologist.

Miss Barbara Ann Roloff became the bride of Kirk Phillip Taylor at a ceremony read by the Rev. Timothy Seim, Abbottsford, B. C., at the Fourth Memorial Church. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Leonard B. Roloff, Nine Mile Falls, and Mr. and Mrs. Phillip E. Taylor, N5315 Fairmount Place. The bride chose a gown of giana, enhanced with Mencon lace on the high neckline, bodice and sleeves. A matching headpiece held her cathedral-length veil. 3. Obit: Kirk P. Taylor
March 9, 1951 – September 6, 2020
Kirk Phillip Taylor was born in Pasco, WA, the second child of Bonnie and Phillip Taylor. Kirk was raised in Spokane on Fairmount Place with his siblings and many neighborhood friends. He graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1969 and followed his parents into retail. He began working at Safeway as a box boy and then a meat cutter, which was his profession for the next 41 years.
Kirk and Barbara Ann Roloff were introduced by their siblings in 1974. They were married on a snowy April 5, 1975, in Spokane with family and friends coming from all over the state. Kirk and Barb spent their first year in Davenport, WA, where they welcomed their first daughter Bethany. It was three short years later, with a cancer win, new home, and second daughter Krista that the family settled in Marshall, WA, closer to extended family. The Marshall house was designed with the couples family heirlooms, antiques, and to host family and friends. Many wonderful memories, parties, and loved ones who are no longer with us spent time there. On those 5 acres Kirk was able to have his outhouse, chicken coop, guinea hens, and turkeys and told stories about them for years.
Kirk faced many bouts with illness in adulthood with persistence and grit. He fought through each brush with death with determination to get back to family and friends. In 1989, after getting a position at Costco, Kirk and the rest of the Taylor family made the move over the Cascades and settled in Bellevue, WA. The Taylor family loved to travel near and far and enjoyed meeting extended family for camping, large Christmas gatherings at Fairmount Place, trips to Canada and Hawaii.
Kirk was a collector of antiques and family heirlooms and knew the history of most items in his possession. He loved connecting with family, friends, and the community. Sharing stories, he was able to recall dates, locations, and names of everyone in each photo. Roaming the country, gallivanting and antiquing was something he enjoyed his whole life. In 2000, Kirk and Barb were divorced, and Kirk moved in with James Arthur. In his later years, Kirk found joy exploring Seattle, living in Capitol Hill, and traveling to tropical climates with James Arthur. Kirk and Jim shared the same interest in family, classic cars, and each other.
Kirk would light up when he showed pictures of his grandchildren. He was a boastful grandpa to the Henriksen Five—Zadok, Tirzah, Azaliah, Kezia, and Zimri—and he kept close tabs on the DuSchene crew—Gabriel Powter and Victoria Castro—and many exchange students. Kirk loved being a grandpa and could not get enough time with them. The little angels were a source of pride and made his heart happy.
Always the enthusiast for a family get-together, Kirk would have wanted to celebrate and let everyone know he was turning 70 on March 9, 2021. Kirk passed away on a sunny afternoon in September, enjoying time in Bay View with his grandkids. His passing was sudden, unexpected, and dramatic. We will miss him forever.
Kirk was predeceased by his partner James, his parents, and grandparents. He is survived by Barbara Taylor, Bethany and Ben DuSchene, Krista and Craig Henriksen, brother Brent Taylor and his wife Olga, sister Lynn Seim and her husband Tim, and grandchildren Zadok, Tirzah, Azaliah, Kezia, and Zimri Henriksen, and Gabriel Powter and Victoria Castro.
There will be a virtual service March 9, 2021, at 5:30 p.m., hosted at Seed Church. Please join us via Zoom. If you have a written statement, story, or video you would like to share, please send them to Bethany at 206-255-0929 or leave them on this site.
