2. Picking up the pieces of last week's glider crash on the Grand Teton forced rangers to balance their own safety with the important task of recovering the body of a husband and father. Renny Jackson, incident commander of the recovery effort and Jenny Lake area ranger, said last week's effort took an enormous amount of planning. The first job was to locate the body of David Ryhti, 47, of Mounds View, Minn., and determine whether the spot was threatened by rockfall from the North Face. He crashed into the summit July 1 and he and his high performance glider tumbled down the peak's north side.
"The aim was first to figure out if it was safe enough to go up there and have a look," Jackson said. The Park Service asked for volunteers for the recovery, and seven people stepped forward. The team looked at weather and temperatures beginning with the day after the glider crash. Jackson said late that morning the team read a thermometer at the Lower Saddle, at about 11,600 feet. "What you hope for is the high alpine wall freezing," Jackson said, referring to the North Face of the Grand. "Unfortunately during this time period the glacier is only in the 40s. ... We knew we were going into a risky place because of the rockfall this time of year. The North Face is quite a loose rock area in general."
Because Ryhti's body was on the Grandstand at the base of the dangerous face, acting chief ranger Bill Holda said it was a step-by-step recovery. "We had to know when to say 'no,'" Holda said.
Rangers have faced at least one climbing fatality where they were unable to recover a body they had found. The incident occurred not far from the North Face of the Grand when an alpinist on the East Ridge was killed by falling rocks. Rangers located the victim but judged it too dangerous to try and retrieve his corpse. Holda said early on in the operation the rangers knew the pilot was killed in the crash. That made time less of a factor and allowed for a more careful approach.
Jackson said beginning the recovery effort Tuesday afternoon allowed the North Face to cool down in the shade reducing the chance of falling debris. A helicopter with seven rangers was flown to a helicopter landing spot on the north side of the Grand, in Glacier Gulch. Two people acted as "spotters," watching rock fall with binoculars and equipped with a warning horn should the climbing rangers be in danger, Jackson said.
Conditions on the Teton Glacier were assessed on site for some time before the rangers decided to ascend the Grandstand to make the recovery. "We left it up to them if they would commit to this operation," Jackson said.
In an effort that spanned nine hours, five rangers climbed the precarious slopes. While alpinists follow this route they usually do it as fast as possible, reaching the safety of the top of the Grandstand or one of the ledges on the North Face. Lingering under the towering alpine wall, which rises some 1,800 vertical feet, is universally considered an invitation to danger.
The afternoon of July 2, the team climbed to the Grandstand using ropes to safeguard a crevassed area of the Teton Glacier. The group crossed the bergschrund, an area at the top of the glacier where the ice pulls away from the rock.
"You have to use climbing skills to find the best place to get across, all the while trying to do it as quickly as possible," Jackson said.
At about 4:15 p.m. that day the team climbed 300 feet up from the bergschrund to the body and prepared it for lowering. That climb was difficult, Jackson said, because the Grandstand rock was covered in flowing water.
The body was moved down the bergschrund, across the the uppermost part of Teton Glacier, then lowered down the glacier to the spot where the helicopter would lower a cable to hook up. A helicopter brought the body out July 3. Jackson said the rangers all "take care of each other" and try to be supportive through the stressful recoveries.
"This is the worst part of the Jenny Lake job," Jackson said. "We deal with a variety of human tragedies. The effects are cumulative. Some people have dealt with it over a number of years."
Jackson said this incident may have allowed rangers to distance themselves from the tragedy because it was an airplane accident, not a climbing one. Too often rangers have been called to recover those of their own ilk. "There was some feeling of being separate from this, the circumstances were quite a bit different," he said. "If you can separate yourself from it, it helps."
Holda said people involved in the recovery participated in a debriefing to talk about the incident. "It's kind of an informal setting, we sit around and talk about the incident," he said. "It's to give closure, to give people the chance to debrief rather than going their own way." Still on the North Face are debris from the glider. Jackson said rangers are looking into what to do and trying to pinpoint locations of parts of the plane.
Holda said some debris may be in more precarious locations than others, threatening to fall down climbing routes. That could lead rangers to try to get the debris off the face. But, safety for rangers is the biggest concern and nothing will be moved if it would put people in harm's way, he said.
A DC-3 plane that crashed into Mount Moran decades ago remains at that site. Climbers pass it routinely as they ascend the peak's northeast ridge. "In a perfect world we would want to bring it down," Holda said of the glider. No timeline has been set for determining what parts, if any, to bring off the mountain. Ryhti crashed his private glider plane into the Grand Teton July 1. (Jackson Hole News & Guide, July 2002)3. Body of Mounds View man recovered after glider crash in Tetons Park rangers recovered the body of a Mounds View man Wednesday from a mountain in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park, where he had crashed Monday while piloting a glider plane. According to the Jackson Hole News, David Ryhti, 47, was circling the Grand Teton late Monday afternoon when his glider crashed into the mountain's northeast side, about 100 feet below the 13,770-foot summit. Rangers on an aerial search Tuesday spotted Ryhti's body below a 2,000-foot cliff and worked six hours to move it to Teton Glacier, where it was recovered Wednesday and flown out, National Park officials said. Ryhti was an experienced glider pilot who had flown in the Teton area for years, the newspaper reported. He was towed by a motorized plane from an airport in Driggs, Idaho, and released at a height of 3,000 feet about 90 minutes before the crash. (Jackson Hole News, 7 July 2002)
4. JACKSON HOLE, WYO. Mounds View man killed in glider crash
A Mounds View man was killed last week when his glider crashed into the Grand Teton mountains, near Jackson Hole, Wyo. David Ryhti, 47, who died July 1, was flying his own glider at the time of the accident, said his wife, Carolynn Crumley. An experienced glider, Ryhti was on vacation with his two children, A.J., 16, and Nora, 11, and was staying at a hotel in Driggs, Idaho, Crumley said. "He had flown on Saturday and did really well," she said. "On Sunday, he did not go up because it was extremely windy. Monday he went up. A draft must have caught him."
Grand Teton Park rangers found his body July 2, below a 2,000-foot sheer cliff on the north face of the Grand Teton.
His body was moved to a more secure location before it was recovered by helicopter July 3, park officials said in a news release. Ryhti, an engineering tech at Alliant Techsystems Inc. in Arden Hills, had been flying gliders for nearly 20 years and loved it, Crumley said. "It was the closest thing to soaring like an eagle," she said. "That was his thing." (Pioneer Press, July 2002)5. Molly Crumley, 48, of River Falls, pulled onto the shoulder of eastbound I-94 on the St. Croix River bridge at around 8.30am on Thursday, during morning rush hour. According to witnesses, she then exited her vehicle, leaving her young daughter inside, climbed over the railing and threw herself off. The woman is believed to have died on impact, when she hit the ice-covered lake. St. Croix County Sheriff's Department recovered her body from the ice using an air boat. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the bridge is 55 feet above the water at its highest point. Crumley's 11-year-old daughter, who hasn't been identified, witnesses the horrific tragedy and is now in the care of relatives. According to Crumley's Facebook, she has at least one other daughter.
