2. Curtain Of Sight Comes Down Fast
(photo)
RAPID CITY (AP) -- The curtain of sight came down with a thud one afternoon in 1965 for 23-year-old Mrs. Marshall Mayry who had just celebrated her first month wedding anniversary. "I was riding home" she said "when I felt something inmy left eye. I tried to get in to see the doctors at the army base where my husband was stationed, but they said they were too busy and it would be six weeks before they could see me. I then made an appointment to see a local doctor who told me I would be blind in less than a year." Mrs. Mayry's blindness came as a result of diabetes. no one else in her family of two brothers and one sister was born with this inherited disease. "My great, great grandmother had it." the young wife said. She added that the doctors told her genetically speaking this should have come out in the third generation, which would have been her mother, but it skipped a generation and showed up in the fourth. Mrs. Mayry, who is better known as Kay, lived a normal life, in spite of the fact she had to take daily doses of insulin. She and her husband met in high school and continued to date while he attended the University of Minnesota at Duluth and she attended Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. Her husband, Marsh, graduated with a degree in economics in 1963, and the following year she graduated with a double degree in psychology and elementary education. Marsh was drafted into the army and she took a job teaching. They were married in July 1965. life was treating them well. As a side effect of diabetes, kay was having small hemorrhages in her eye. After each hemorrhage, scar tissue would develop. on the day she lost sight in her left eye, a blood vessel broke and caused a massive hemorrhage which put too much strain on the scared retina. It was this massive hemorrhage which caused her to suffer a detached retina, which left her without sight in the left eye. Her doctor told her not to lift anything and to sleep with two pillows. "One morning," she said, "I was brushing my teeth and I looked in the mirror and saw my right eye full of blood." "Later in the day," she added, "the blood had been re-absorbed into my system and my eye cleared somewhat." Kay's doctor referred her to the Seattle Eye Clinic. It was from these doctors that she learned she was slowly going blind. "I had ten months between the loss of sight in both eyes," she said, "so I had time to adjust to this problem." Kay still has ten percent sight in her right eye, but she said, "I can only see big items, and then a lot depends upon the light." Her husband said the biggest adjustment for him was to learn patience. "It is the hardest thing in the world to keep from helping her," he explained. "But," he added, "it's the only way she will become self-sufficient. Everyday she amazes me by what she can do." He added that he wants her to become as independent as possible, so that if anything should happen to him she will be able to help herself. "I suppose," Marsh explained, "that because I'm in the insurance business I'm more aware of death and the problems it brings when it strikes a family." Together they have worked out a system to help her. For instance in typing a letter, Marsh has put tape on the "home keys" of the typewriter so she doesn't make the mistake of typing a letter with her fingers on the wrong keys. "One time," Kay added, "I typed a three page letter only to have Marsh tell me the ribbon selector was on stencil." And she laughed when she told me about the few cakes she had "broiled," because she had forgotten to check the oven regulator. They solved that problem by putting tape on the oven temperature so she knows when it's on. "And," Marsh said as he pointed to the oven temperature control knob, "the engineers prbably did this without thinking, but this rise in the knob is set so that when it's vertical, the oven is at 350." Together Kay and Marsh have worked out their problems around their immaculate home. Their biggest problem comes with people who are afraid to break tradition. "The schools won't hire a legally blind person," Kay explained, "If they would just give me an opportunity to take an open contract I think they would find I'm still capable of teaching, even though blind." While kay is still helping herself, she continues to help others. She devotes volunteer time to teaching children at the Black Hills Workshop School and in helping with the problems the local probation office has. Their biggest success, since moving to this area last February from Denver, is instituting a potluck supper which is held on Friday and Saturday nights the second weekend of every month. The couple explained that after moving here they felt a need for getting people together without one individual having to foot the cost for the gathering. "We started out with ten people," Kay said "but this past weekend we had 40 who participated." The group is divided into tens with several host homes. kay keeps an active card file which lists who the host will be, who will bring the main dish, etc. kay keeps abreast of current articles by listening to magazines reproduced on tapes and records. And while she's listening she knits gifts. If she's not knitting, she's ironing. "You look around you," they said, "and you find a lot of people with problems worse than ours." Karen Mayry, 64, RAPID CITY, S.D. - Karen Mayry, 64, Rapid City, S.D., died Tuesday Nov. 28, 2006, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Karen was born April 30, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, to David R and Nellie E. (Daufney) Anderson. The second of five children, she was raised in Hibbing, graduating from Hibbing High School in 1960 and Hamline University in St. Paul.
At age 11, Karen was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which defined the rest of her life.
Karen taught school in Arvada, Colo., for one year before marrying her long-time love, Marshall Mayry, in 1965. While living in Tacoma, Wash., where Marshall was finishing out his military obligation, Karen taught in the Clover Park school system. They later moved to Denver, Colo., where she taught in a private school for children who had dropped out of the public school system. In 1968, they moved to Rapid City, S.D., where Karen was employed for several years as juvenile probation officer.
Beginning in 1965, she had experienced continual vision loss and was deemed legally blind in her late 20’s. Due to her constant determination and positive attitude in coping with her diabetes, blindness and other health problems, Karen became one of two founders of the Diabetes Network of the National Federation of the Blind and the state president of the South Dakota affiliate of the NFB, a position she held for 25 years. Her list of organizations is vast and her accomplishments and awards are countless, including the recognition she received in the U.S. Senate, Washington D.C. by South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson on April 8, 2004.
Karen is survived by her husband, Marshall, Rapid City, S.D.; and one brother, David R Anderson, Chippewa Falls, Wis.; special niece, Gail Wagner, Albuquerque, N.M.; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Beverly Olson; and one brother, Robert E. Anderson.
At Karen’s request, services will be held at a later date.

1. President National Federation Of The Blind (N.F.B.) Of South Dakota.
2. MY KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
by Karen Mayry From The Editor: Karen Mayry is a long-term diabetic who knows the importance of good diabetes control. Karen was the original president of our Diabetes Action Network at its inception in 1985. She also serves as president of the National Federation of the Blind of South Dakota..
Karen discusses her kidney transplant, an important issue for anyone with diabetes. People experiencing renal failure should realize at some point they may have to choose between dialysis and transplantation. Kidney transplant recipients enjoy a high rate of success (organ survival) and their quality of life is vastly better than on dialysis.
Here's what Karen says: In 1968, Marshall and I had been married for three years. During a routine visit to my doctor, Marshall was told that my kidneys were failing and that my life expectancy would be shortened dramatically. According to medical knowledge at the time, he was correct in relating that persons with diabetes were not able to have kidney transplants. Luckily, I did not require a transplant until 1977, when my brother, David, donated a kidney to me. Dr. John Najarian, MD, Chief or Surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospital, performed the surgery.
Twenty-five years later I am healthy, busy and fully involved in life's activities. I have had the opportunity to be married to my biggest supporter and wonderful man, join the thousands of volunteers in the National Federation of the Blind, travel, and benefit from the love of my family and friends.
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! (http://www.nfb.org/vod/vodspr0208.htm)

3. From Rapid City, South Dakota, Karen was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11, while in the fifth grade. "When it became time for my transplant, my brother David Richard immediately said that he would donate a kidney to me, if our blood types matched at all, and of course they did, and we did," she says.
"I went in to the hospital weighing 143 lbs which was at least 25 lbs over my normal weight. And I had no clothes to wear at that point because everything I owned was too small. I came out of the hospital weighing 103 lbs, and still had no clothes to wear because everything was too big!
"On January 12, 1977, 23 years ago, I got my transplant at the University of Minnesota Hospital. And after the transplant, I loved it because I only needed like three hours of sleep, I was so hyped up. I just can't imagine somebody making the choice to not have the transplant when they have the option. If it were up to me and I lost this one and had to go for another one, I would take that opportunity as well."(http://www.nfb.org/vod/vow0001.htm)

4. Public Statements
Speaker: Senator Tim P. Johnson (SD)
Title: Honoring Karen Mayry
Location: Washington DC
Date: 04/08/2004
HONORING KAREN MAYRY
Mr. JOHNSON. Mr. President, I stand today to recognize an individual who is a dedicated advocate for the blind in this Nation, and especially in my home State of South Dakota. Karen was raised in Hibbing, MN. The second of five children, she learned at an early age to cope with people's afflictions. Her brother Robert was born with Down syndrome. It was from this early exposure that Karen gained some of the beliefs that would carry over in later life. At age 11, Karen, herself was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes-the disease that was to define the rest of her life. In 1965, Karen married her long-time love, Marshall. While living in Tacoma, WA, where Marshall was to finish out his military obligation, Karen found a job teaching in the Clover Park school system. In her first year on the job, she experienced her first hemorrhage in her right eye which resulted in complete vision loss in that eye. Because of her love of educating children, she remained on the job teaching despite experiencing a traumatic physical ailment. Marshall and Karen moved to Denver, CO after his military obligation was fulfilled. While in Denver, Karen lost still more of her vision and for all purposes became “totally blind” and underwent eye surgery with the hope of restoring some vision to her right eye. The surgery was deemed a cosmetic failure. It was also at this time, that doctors discovered that she was beginning to experience renal failure. In 1969, Karen and Marshall moved to Rapid City where she was hired on as a Juvenile Probation officer. She remained at the position for 6 years until her renal failure had continued to progress so much that she was no longer able to continue her duties. Experiencing kidney failure soon after, her loving brother, David, offered one of his kidneys. After many months of complications delaying the surgery, the transplant was successful. Three weeks later, she left the hospital and her kidney functions have remained excellent for the past 27 years. Following the successful kidney treatment, she was approached by representatives of National Federation of the Blind to become a member. The philosophy of the NFB matched her own; one of independence and the abilities of blind persons, if given a chance. Soon after joining, she became active that same year and was elected state president, a quite remarkable accomplishment. Karen Mayry is the long-time president of the South Dakota Federation of the Blind. For many years, she has provided tireless advocacy for the blind residents of South Dakota and for the disabled population of the State. Under her presidency the State affiliate has grown to five local chapters. She has proposed and lobbied for and had legislation passed bettering the lives of blind South Dakotans. She has testified before the Senate, investigating transportation for the handicapped and has annually made trips to our Nation's Capital to lobby for issues of importance to the blind of the country. She is dedicated to advocating issues of importance, and she is committed to breaking down the structural and attitudinal barriers that impact the blind and disabled community in south Dakota. Her list of organizations is vast and her accomplishments and awards are countless. Despite various physical ailments in recent years, Karen refuses to be sidelined and continues her stalwart advocacy. Her vitality and energy is commendable and her advocacy and education over the years on issues affecting blind and disabled individuals have proven very successful. She works hard to educate and advocate for the Americans with Disabilities Act, helps promote the skills and talents of the blind and educates the business community about the importance of hiring individuals with disabilities. South Dakotans with disabilities have many fighters in their corner, and Karen Mayry is one of their most ardent advocates. Karen doesn't mince words with elected officials, I, for one, have appreciated her frankness and candor over the years. Her insight is valuable on important issues, not only on matters directly affecting blind residents, but also in issues vital to all South Dakotans, disabled and non-disabled alike. As residents in my State prepare for the annual South Dakota Federation of the Blind Convention in Sioux Falls, I take this opportunity to congratulate and commend Karen Mayry for her many years of outstanding advocacy work for the blind. I applaud her dedication and commitment, appreciate her advocacy, and wish her the best in her own individual battle to come. I look forward to continuing my work with Karen concerning issues of importance to the blind and disabled citizens of south Dakota. It is with great honor that I share her impressive accomplishments with my colleagues. (http://www.vote-smart.org/speech_detail.php?speech_id=33738&keyword=&phrase=&contain=)

6. COON VALLEY, Wis. - Norwegian jokes have become commonplace and new ones keep cropping up all the time, but a recent incident here proves that the good people about whom they are told have a real sense of humor. The story begins when middle-aged bachelor farmer Milton Larson from up on Old Mill Road about a half-mile south of Coon Valley suddenly disappeared from town with his bride, Florence Ekern. A fellow townsman reported his friends learned that Larson had married. “Yes, it was all kind of a secret." one of his friends says laughingly. Perhaps thinking that Milton and Florence had pulled off a fast one on them, some of their friends decided to counterattack and reverse the trick. Some dozen or so friends and neighbors joined forces to surprise the couple when they returned from their honeymoon. First of all they cut some fresh birch trees and erected them upright in triangle form and wrapped cheesecloth around the trees to build a tepee to "house" the newlyweds. The tepee was erected on a site where Larson reportedly planned to build a new house. Right alongside the white tepee with the green birch branches poking out of its peak they placed a red outhouse. A large white sign was erected on the hillside near the tepee bearing the words: “Welcome Home Newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Larson.” A large oil drum with the wording “Mr. and Mrs. Milton Larson" was attached to a post at the front of the property. The unusual “mailbox" was stuffed with, newspapers and other items. The newlyweds returned from their honeymoon, but some bovines got to the new home erected by their friends before the couple did. The cows apparently thought the tepee was edible and went after it like a stampede and flattened it to the ground. Alas, no more tepee. One of Larson's friends said he remarked that he was ready to move in too. He reportedly also remarked that if he had known about the construction project he would have got someone to build a house that would stand up. “I would also have taken out insurance," he added. (The La Crosse Tribune, July 7, 1972, p. 9)
