Norman D. Martin, of Whitewater, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car collided at about 12:45 p.m. with a vehicle driven by Paul Swader, 18, also of Whitewater. Martin and passenger Almyra Martin, 69, of Whitewater, were approaching a slight curve while heading north when Swader's southbound car crossed the center line and struck Martin's vehicle head on. Both Martin and his passenger were wearing seat belts as were Swader and his passenger Brian Hookstead, 17, of Whitewater. Almyra Martin and Swader were flown to UW Hospital, and Hookstead was taken to Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services. The condition of the three victims was unknown Saturday night. 8. Obit: Norman Dale Martin, age: 70, of Whitewater, died in a two-car crash near Whitewater on Saturday, June 21, 2003. His wife, Beth, was severely injured and remains in a Madison hospital. Norman was born on Oct. 19, 1932, to Mildred Martin in Chaseburg. He married A. Beth Helwig on Sept. 25, 1954, in Superior. He attended 13 years of school at Spooner, graduating in 1950. He then attended Superior State College, where he received a degree in library science. He then obtained an advanced degree in library administration at a Kentucky university. After graduation, he joined the library staff at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he retired after 37 years as librarian emeritus. With his wife he formed a gourmet cooking club at the university several years ago. They also traveled to Europe and South America during their vacations. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Kathleen (James Galvez) of Madison and Lisa Beth Heiman; two grandsons, Kenneth Dale and Martin LeRoy Heiman of Whitewater; several aunts and uncles; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins, including Rod Ripley of Spooner. Olsen Funeral Home of Whitewater was in charge of the visitation on Sunday, June 29. Funeral services will be held at a later date. (The Spooner Advocate, July 22, 2003)

Allen G. Asmus, 77, of Holmen, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Bluffview Memory Care with his family at his side. He was born on January 24, 1938 in West Salem to George and Adelia (Miller) Asmus. Allen was baptized, confirmed, and member of Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem for many years. He graduated from Holmen High School in 1956. On March 11, 1958 he married his dancing partner, Phyllis A. Kopplen, at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. They were blessed with two sons. Allen had worked at the Holmen Creamery, Montgomery Wards for 17 years, and then owned and operated Asmus Appliance Service for 23 years until his illness caused him to retire. He instilled a Christian life in his family and found pleasure in many hobbies including fishing, men’s league softball, playing cards, cutting wood, dancing, visiting with friends. He most enjoyed attending church and being on many committees.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis, two sons, Randy (Michelle) Asmus of Bloomington, MN and Brian Asmus of Holmen, three grandchildren, Alex (Brianna) of Richfield, MN, Megan (Fiancé’ Nick) of St. Paul, MN, and Colin of Bloomington, MN, and many special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Dolores Allen, and a brother James.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 1201 Avon St., La Crosse. Pastor David Leistekow will officiate. Burial will be in the Christ Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, West Salem. He was born Jan. 7, 1953, to Don and Ordetta Rach in La Crosse. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Onalaska, and lifelong member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. On Aug. 9, 1975, he married Kathy Klein at Tamarack Lutheran Church in Arcadia. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Jeff worked as a fisheries biologist for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from 1975 until his retirement in 2008. During the last years of his life, Jeff’s greatest joy was watching his young grandchildren grow older and develop their faith in Jesus. He is well known for ending his phone conversations with his children and grandchildren with “say your prayers.” Jeff spent much of his time outdoors; hunting, fishing and working on his mustangs.
Jeff is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathy Rach; his three children, Steven (Natasha) Rach of Omro, Wis., Anthony (Meghan) Rach of Centennial, Colo., and Melissa Rach of Minneapolis; three sisters, Barbara (Al) Knobloch of La Crosse, Donna (Jeff) Blanchard of Ettrick, and Diane (Dewey) Larson of Mantorville, Minn.; five grandchildren, Madalyne Rach of Omro, Addison Rach of Centennial, Eli Rach of Centennial, Elliott Rach of Omro, and Ava Rach of Centennial; one brother-in-law, Gary (Pix) Klein of Arcadia; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Doerr and Margie Klein, both of Trempealeau; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jeff was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 1201 Main St., Onalaska. The Rev. P. William Bader and the Rev. Norris Baumann will officiate.
