Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend. She passed away April 13 after a courageous battle with a brain injury. She was born in Ballard to Gordon and Betty Daufney on February 14, 1953. After graduating from Ballard High School, she married and had two daughters. She was extremely proud of her accomplishments in her career with the Washington State Ferries where she worked for 23 years and had achieved the rank of Chief Mate. For all those who knew her, she was a hard-working and compassionate woman who frequently went out of her way to help others. In recent years, she volunteered as a CASA helping children in Kitsap County. Her greatest love, however, was the time she spent experiencing life with her friends. All who knew her loved her and she will be greatly missed.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her children, Sherri Hainje (Matt) and Shelly Davis (Jeff); her sisters, Judy Daufney-Stenberg (Don) and Nancy Tropple (Ron); her brother, Glynn Daufney; her grandchildren, Halie, Joseph, Lauren, and Julian; many nieces and nephews; and her constant companion, her yorkie, J.D.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Green Lake Presbyterian Church (6318 Linden Ave. N., Seattle). Norman D. Martin, of Whitewater, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car collided at about 12:45 p.m. with a vehicle driven by Paul Swader, 18, also of Whitewater. Martin and passenger Almyra Martin, 69, of Whitewater, were approaching a slight curve while heading north when Swader's southbound car crossed the center line and struck Martin's vehicle head on. Both Martin and his passenger were wearing seat belts as were Swader and his passenger Brian Hookstead, 17, of Whitewater. Almyra Martin and Swader were flown to UW Hospital, and Hookstead was taken to Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services. The condition of the three victims was unknown Saturday night. Norman was born on Oct. 19, 1932, to Mildred Martin in Chaseburg. He married A. Beth Helwig on Sept. 25, 1954, in Superior. He attended 13 years of school at Spooner, graduating in 1950. He then attended Superior State College, where he received a degree in library science. He then obtained an advanced degree in library administration at a Kentucky university. After graduation, he joined the library staff at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he retired after 37 years as librarian emeritus. With his wife he formed a gourmet cooking club at the university several years ago. They also traveled to Europe and South America during their vacations. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Kathleen (James Galvez) of Madison and Lisa Beth Heiman; two grandsons, Kenneth Dale and Martin LeRoy Heiman of Whitewater; several aunts and uncles; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins, including Rod Ripley of Spooner. - Almyra L. Helwig, 94, of Whitewater, died Wednesday, October 20, at the home of her daughter, Beth, in Whitewater. Born December 28, 1898, in Harrison, Idaho, the daughter of Hans and Emma (Jenkins) Stuve, she married Karl Lyle Helwig on February 17, 1923, in Rockford, Illinois. He died on October 6, 1977. Mrs. Helwig was a teacher for 29 years, including teaching in one-room schools, grade country school and high school and served as a principal for many years, retiring in 1963. She was a member of Danbury United Methodist Church, Danbury. Surviving are one son, Karl Lyle Jr. (Opal) of Marquette, Michigan; two daughters, A. Beth (Norman) Martin of Whitewater and Virginia Margaret (Leslie) Goplen of Deerfield; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen E.M. (Robert) Short of Alexandria, Minnesota; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, William; two grandsons, David and Daniel Helwig; two brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church, Whitewater, with the Reverend Lance Herrick officiating. MADISON - Almira Beth (nee Helwig) Martin, 90, of Madison, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 26, 2024.
Beth was born in Waupaca, Wis., the youngest of Karl Helwig and Almira (nee Stuve) Helwig’s four children. The family soon moved to Superior, Wis., where Beth attended the Superior schools through college. Beth was valedictorian for her high school class, just like her siblings before her. Beth met and married her beloved Norman Martin while attending the University of Wisconsin-Superior for her degree in art. Soon after the wedding, Norman was drafted into the U.S. Army, and so Norman and Beth moved to Germany. The couple moved to Nashville, Tenn., after completing Norman’s Army service where Beth taught art classes and Norman attained his master’s degree in library science at Peabody College.
Upon Norman’s completion of the master’s degree in library science the couple settled in Whitewater, Wis., where they made a home on Lindsey Court. Beth further developed a career as an art teacher for area schools, including the Madison Area Technical College system, while Norman flourished as the first reference librarian for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
On July 6, 1961, Beth gave birth to Kathleen Louise, and on April 29, 1964, Beth gave birth to Lisa Beth. The family thrived in Whitewater, building lifelong friendships, attending and participating in United Methodist Church programs, supporting the Whitewater community, doting on their two grandsons, and taking many family trips.
On Saturday, June 21, 2003, a fatal car accident killed Norman and required Beth to be hospitalized at the UW Hospital in Madison for four months. A new chapter would now begin for Beth with her daughter, Kathy, and Kathy’s husband, Jim Galvez. The three of them all moved into a new home in Madison, Wis., on Oct. 4, 2003, the day Beth was released from the hospital. In 2005, The Hoard Museum of Fort Atkinson, Wis., asked Beth if she would accept the offer to be the featured artist for 2005. Beth happily accepted. This showing turned out to be the largest exhibit and largest attended showing of a Featured Artist for The Hoard Museum. From October 2003 until August 2024, Beth was the family miracle by: recovering and adjusting to her car accident injuries, teaching art in her new home, taking the pet dogs for their daily walks, extensively traveling throughout the United States, Brazil, Ireland, Caribbean, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and visiting so many times, “The Most Magical Place on Earth”- Walt Disney World in Florida.
Beth was preceded in death by spouse, Norman Martin; her parents, Karl Helwig and Almira (nee Stuve) Helwig; her siblings, Virginia (nee Helwig) Goplen, Karl Helwig and William Helwig; and other family and friends.
Beth is immediately survived by her daughters, Kathy Martin (Jim Galvez) and Lisa Martin; and her grandsons, Kenneth and Karl.
A celebration of life will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at 2 p.m., and will be preceded by a visitation at the funeral home starting at 1 p.m. Immediately following the celebration of life, cake and ice cream will be served at Unity of Madison, 601 Tompkins Drive, Madison.

EMMA STUVE DIED OF A HEART ATTACK:
Grandma Stuve suffered a heart attack on Tuesday and was taken by ambulance to the Krohn Hospital in Black River Falls, Wednesday. She died early Saturday morning. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church. Mrs. Karl Helwig, Superior; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Short, Wessington Springs, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Howell Stuve, Owen; were called home by the death of their mother, Emma Stuve.
2. Virginia M. (Helwig) (Goplen) Anderson, 88, of Madison, Wis., passed away peacefully at Agrace HospiceCare on May 12, 2014, surrounded by family.
Ginny was born on April, 13, 1926 in Humbird, Wis., to Karl and Almyra Helwig. She was the oldest of four children (Bill, Karl and Beth). She grew up in Waupaca, Wis. and later Superior. Where in high school she dated Frank Anderson. Ginny and Frank corresponded with each other during Frank's World War II service with the United States Army in the South Pacific. After the war, Ginny attended UW-Madison where she met her first husband, Leslie J. "Les" Goplen. They were married in June of 1948. Ginny graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in home economics.
Ginny taught home economics and adult education classes while raising three children, Gary, Pamela and Bruce, in Monona, Wis. In 1970, she returned to UW-Madison for her M.S. in counseling, becoming a counselor at McFarland High School for 10 years. After two years of advanced training, she became a marriage and family psychotherapist for the remainder of her career (20 years), working at the Madison Holistic Health Center and founding the Birch Springs Center in Monona, Wis.
In December, 2009, Ginny married her high school (Superior Central) sweetheart, Frank W. Anderson in Madison, Wis., where they resided when not traveling to Norway or wintering in Florida. Ginny and Frank made a beautiful couple and spent their golden years together until Ginny became ill. Frank remained at her side and was her primary companion and care giver for the last year of her life.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Frank W. Anderson; three children, Gary (Sandra) Goplen of Stoughton, Wis., Pamela (Mark) Hallowell of Clyde Park, Mont., and Bruce (Vicky) Goplen of Edgerton, Wis.; a step-son Edward M. (Dawn) Anderson, Superior; four grandchildren, Bradly Goplen of Monroe, Wis., Chad (Sherry) Goplen of Janesville, Wis., Christopher (Kelly) Goplen of Madison, Wis. and Kevin (Amanda) Goplen; two step-grandchildren, Erick and Nicholas Anderson, Superior; and two great-grandchildren, Lily and Beatrice Goplen; a brother, Karl (Opal) Helwig of Winona, Minn.; a sister, Beth Martin of Madison, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Allen G. Asmus, 77, of Holmen, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Bluffview Memory Care with his family at his side. He was born on January 24, 1938 in West Salem to George and Adelia (Miller) Asmus. Allen was baptized, confirmed, and member of Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in West Salem for many years. He graduated from Holmen High School in 1956. On March 11, 1958 he married his dancing partner, Phyllis A. Kopplen, at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. They were blessed with two sons. Allen had worked at the Holmen Creamery, Montgomery Wards for 17 years, and then owned and operated Asmus Appliance Service for 23 years until his illness caused him to retire. He instilled a Christian life in his family and found pleasure in many hobbies including fishing, men’s league softball, playing cards, cutting wood, dancing, visiting with friends. He most enjoyed attending church and being on many committees.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis, two sons, Randy (Michelle) Asmus of Bloomington, MN and Brian Asmus of Holmen, three grandchildren, Alex (Brianna) of Richfield, MN, Megan (Fiancé’ Nick) of St. Paul, MN, and Colin of Bloomington, MN, and many special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Dolores Allen, and a brother James.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 1201 Avon St., La Crosse. Pastor David Leistekow will officiate. Burial will be in the Christ Ev. He was born Jan. 7, 1953, to Don and Ordetta Rach in La Crosse. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Onalaska, and lifelong member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. On Aug. 9, 1975, he married Kathy Klein at Tamarack Lutheran Church in Arcadia. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Jeff worked as a fisheries biologist for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from 1975 until his retirement in 2008. During the last years of his life, Jeff’s greatest joy was watching his young grandchildren grow older and develop their faith in Jesus. He is well known for ending his phone conversations with his children and grandchildren with “say your prayers.” Jeff spent much of his time outdoors; hunting, fishing and working on his mustangs.
Jeff is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathy Rach; his three children, Steven (Natasha) Rach of Omro, Wis., Anthony (Meghan) Rach of Centennial, Colo., and Melissa Rach of Minneapolis; three sisters, Barbara (Al) Knobloch of La Crosse, Donna (Jeff) Blanchard of Ettrick, and Diane (Dewey) Larson of Mantorville, Minn.; five grandchildren, Madalyne Rach of Omro, Addison Rach of Centennial, Eli Rach of Centennial, Elliott Rach of Omro, and Ava Rach of Centennial; one brother-in-law, Gary (Pix) Klein of Arcadia; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Doerr and Margie Klein, both of Trempealeau; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
