1439. Mary Ella Smith (Mildred Marie Kniefel , Ella Emelia Bredlow , Elnora Eichler , Laura Ann Henry , Elizabeth {Rebecca} Sutton , Daniel , Philpot John ) was born on 2 May 1940 in Faribault, Rice Co., MN. She died on 2 Apr 2023 in Longmont, Boulder., CO.

1. Obit: Mary Ella “Mary” Kornman (Smith) passed away peacefully on April 2, 2023. in Longmont, Colorado. Mary was born May 2, 1940, in Faribault, Minnesota and was the youngest of three children. She loved that she was named after each of her grandmothers. Her favorite things to do as a child were ice skating, sledding and swimming. In school, she loved history and geography.
Much of Mary’s life was affected by the car accident she was in at age 13, which severely injured her left leg. A surgeon at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis was determined to save her left leg, and at the time, it was a pioneering medical effort. Five years after the car accident, Mary was finally able to walk unfettered for her high school graduation. She attributed her education to Sister Carol, who called her one day while she was laid up in bed and asked her what she was doing, to which Mary replied “nothing”. Sister Carol told her to enjoy that because the next day she would be tutored by a home-bound teacher visiting every weekday to ensure she was keeping up with her school work. Mary was thankful for Sister Carol’s intervention that allowed her to finish her education.
Though Mary had always wanted to be a nurse, she accepted her physical limitations, and after graduating high school, she went to the Minnesota School of Business and took bookkeeping and clerical classes. Her first job was for the Art Instruction Company in Minneapolis, creating contracts for sales and doing the bookkeeping for the company. One of her business school roommates had a cousin in Denver, and they both came for a visit with the intention of going to California afterward. Instead, Mary stayed in Denver and found a clerical job at a trucking company in Denver. There she met her husband-to-be, John Kornman, and they had three children, Kathleen, Jean and Michael. She worked on the family farm, doing tractor work, bookkeeping, cooking meals for hired hands throughout the year and at harvest time.
Mary was a devoted mother and grandmother. She never missed a school function or sports game. She wrote once that the car accident allowed her to find God and taught her to patient and kind. She never complained when she was in pain. She loved to read in her spare time. Her family takes comfort that she is no longer in pain and is in Heaven with God, her loved ones and her beloved family pets.
Mary is survived by her children Jean Kornman and Michael Kornman (Keisha); granddaughter, Lauren Kornman; sister-in-law Joanne Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Kornman, her daughter Kathleen Michelle Kornman, her parents Lewis B. Smith and Mildred M. Smith (Kniefel); sister Lavonne “Bonnie” Walker and brother-in-law Donnie Walker; brother Lewis B. Smith, Jr.
