1. Sunshine and Happy Hearts Welcome Navy Transport
A light drizzle added to the moisture at the Seattle Army Terminal this forenoon, but smiles and sunshine eventually broke through the tears and mist. Warmth came simultaneously from the sun and from happy hearts as the Navy transport Gen. M. M. Patrick sidled in close enough to the pier for those ashore to recognize their important servicemen aboard. Mrs. Rodney Chapman of Wapato, Yakima County, had waited 16 months for her big, handsome soldier. She almost missed him as he marched away toward a waiting bus. "Rodney! Rodney! Oh, he doesn't see us!" Mrs. Chapman cried. "Somebody tell him we're here! Rodney, over here!" That last "Rodney!" did it. Sergeant Chapman didn't wait for a fourth. But he did hear a name he never had been called before. His son Ricky Dean, 20 months, had learned to say "Daddy!"... (Seattle Daily Times, Oct. 26, 1955, p. 33)2. Obit: Rodney M. 1. Obit: Our world is a little less warm and beautiful today with the loss of beloved mother and grandmother, Carol May Brown. Her sparkling eyes did not open again from an afternoon nap on Wednesday, November 4th, 2020. She shaped young minds and brought out the potential of countless students throughout the upper and lower Yakima Valley. She always said her students taught her more than she ever taught them. She developed a true and enduring connection to each of her students. The legacy she leaves us with is an example of loving unconditionally.

1. (sister) Marjorie Brown Hopkins, 96, of Yakima died on Wednesday July 1, 2015, at Highgate Senior Center.
Marjorie was born May 11, 1919, in Spokane, Washington, to Charles and Julia May (McAuliffe) Brown, a pioneer farming family of the Wapato area. She was raised on a farm where she attended a “one-room” schoolhouse. She graduated from Wapato High School in 1937 and went on to graduate from Central Washington State College at Ellensburg in 1940, where she met the love of her life, Willis G. (“Bill”) Hopkins. They were married in Camas, Washington on November 1, 1941, days before Bill was sent to Santa Rosa, California and Texas where Marj accompanied him and taught school. Bill was eventually assigned to the South Pacific for the remainder of World War II, and Marj returned to the Brown ranch where she continued to teach school for 32 years. After the war Bill farmed and she taught 3rd grade in Harrah and Wapato, completing her career as a reading specialist. Many of her students still remember her mantra “chest high and tummy in.” Bill and Marj were blessed by a great group of cherished friends and were very active in the Wapato community.
Bill and Margie moved to Yakima after her retirement in 1982. Marjorie was an avid bridge player and member of Tillicum Literary Club, Rosalma Club, Women’s Century Club, and a special bridge group of Wapato ladies who met for over 50 years.
Bill died in 1994 and Margie continued to be active with her new Yakima friends at Windcrest Villa, Living Care Senior Center and Harmon Center, where she played weekly bridge for many years.
Margie, a product of the Great Depression, was thrifty and always instilled these values in her family. She was a wonderful cook, hostess, and a gracious caregiver to so many. She handled life’s hardships with grace and optimism that inspired all around her. Whether it was awaiting Willis’s return from the war, or battling cancer earlier in life, she never suffered a moment of self pity and said daily, even to her last, “I count my blessings every day.”
We all count our blessings for her. The family extends our deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Highgate Senior Living Center where Marjorie and her family were so lovingly cared for the last six years.
Marjorie is survived by her two sons, Bill Hopkins and his wife Cheryl of Yakima, Brian Hopkins and his wife Kathy of Federal Way, and her daughter Erin Shirey and husband Jonathan of Yakima, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, a beloved sister, Betty Young McQuesten of Yakima, a special sister-in-law, Patricia Brown of Yakima, and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of over 50 years, Bill, two sisters, Dorothy Dixon and Virginia Morse, four brothers, Robert Brown, Lloyd Brown, Jimmy Brown, and Tommy Brown, and many life-long friends.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, August 14, 2015 at 10:30 at Holy Family Church in Yakima. A lunch and celebration of her life will follow. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yakima Area Arboretum or Wellness House. Merritt Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
