Bud was born 4/10/35 in Chico, CA to Delbert Powell and Alma Bennets-Powell (both deceased). Not long after, his family moved from Chico to Grass Valley, CA and remained there until about 1948 when they moved to Sacramento. Bud attended California Junior High School and graduated from C.K. McClatchy High school in 1953. He passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019. Bud was a really fun guy and almost never met a person he didn't like. He was only 5'5" but that only made him try harder. He was an accomplished sportsman and very proud of it. He could run fast as the wind and carry a football over the back of a fellow player and over the TOUCHDOWN line with great swiftness and pride. He loved golf with friends, and was a forever fan of the S.F. 49ers and S.F. Giants. Bud was a jock, outstanding racquetball player, veteran, wonderful husband, father to many, grandfather, great-grandfather, and much more. He was a Mason and long time member of the BenAli Shrine. Bud was married to Loretta Kuhn-Wolff-Powell for almost 54 years. Some of Loretta's favorite words to Bud were "I love you, Bud" and "Damn It Bud!" He could smile and joke his way out of just about any problem situation. He was a very social, friendly, generous and kind man. Throughout their many moves, Bud would get to know the new neighbors and their history in just a few days. Bud also known as Papa, was a wonderful father to son Bradly Powell, daughter Lisa Wolff- Yates, son Richard Wolff (Dec'd). He was a delightful grandfather to Bianca, Amber, Erin, Harlan, Leland, Marian and Hayley. He was a Great-Grandfather to Anthony, Raymond, Lizzy, Nicholas, Kaizen, Anz, Zuri, Uriah, Asa, Haven, Jaden, Isla and Nyack. All of his grandchildren adored their Papa. He always took lots of time with them including tickling their sweet tooth by giving them candy, ice cream, lunch at Vic's Ice Cream Parlor with a big sweet "whatever" for dessert. Bud had two brothers, Bill Powell (Dec'd) and Bob Powell. Services will be held on Monday 7/29/2019 at Herberger Family Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Boulevard, Elk Grove, CA 95624, at 11:00 am. 2. Alameda Girl, 16, Elopes to Reno
ALAMEDA, Nov 3. - The adage that "love will find a way" still holds good, even if it's all the way to Reno. For the truth of this saying you can quote Mr. and Mrs. James B. McVicar Jr. now at home in their new residence on Benton Street, after a Reno elopment. Mrs. McVicar, who is 16 years old, is the former Miss Maxine Grolla, daughter of Mrs. George E. Hiniker, of 743 Pacific Avenue. Because her daughter was still a student at Alameda Junior High School, Mrs. Hiniker opposed the couple's marriage, but the young folks couldn't wait, and off to Reno they went. Upon their return yesterday they received parental blessings from Mrs. Hiniker and McVicar's mother, Mrs. James B. McVicar Sr., of 1033 Central Avenue. McVicar Sr., is employed by the government in the Philippines. Mrs. McVicar will continue her schooling according to the present plans, she said. She obtained a license at Reno by giving her age as 18, while her husband's age was given as 21. (Oakland Tribune, Nov. 3, 1937, p. 17D)

Notes:
Death Is Mourned. It was with deep regret friends here learned of the death last week of Miss Beulah McVicar, IG, of Oakland, formerly of this valley. Mrs. J. C. Johnson, of Kansas, sister of Mrs. McVlcar, who was here visiting her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Estes, went to Oakland for the services which were held Wednesday. Mrs. McVicar and daughter, Dorothy, are at present guests of Mrs. Estes, coming up Friday. James McVicar, the father, is in the United States Navy and at present located in China, and their oldest son, Jimmy, known in Ukiah and Santa Rosa to the boxing fans, is in Alaska. Miss Beulah was to have become a bride next December. The community extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

2. Hawaii Transplanted to Long Beach
(photo caption) Mrs. Donald Hiniker in her Hawaiian garden. The Hiniker's find that many plants from mid-Pacific will thrive here.
A CHARMING Hawaiian garden flourishes not much more than a stone's throw from the Long Beach Municipal Airport. It is carefully tended by Hoouluonalani Ohta Hiniker, the Hawaiian-Chlnese-English wife of Donald E. Hiniker, purchasing, agent. for the Pacific Far East Line, .and it reminds her of home. Hoouluonalani--"Lani" for short--met her husband in 1952 when he was an Army corporal pharmacist at Tripler Hospital, Honolulu, and she was a clerk-typist in the same hospital. They were married in 1953 and came to the United States. They have two lively little sons, Michael, 4, and Mitchell, 1.
In their Tropical garden, 5318 Coralite St., they have honohono orchids in bloom, tiny pale yellow orchids with pale lavender edges. They have a variety of anthurium plants - the red kind one most commonly sees in floral shops, and the Hawaiian "pigtail" variety. "At home", explains Lani, "the center curls like a pig's tail. Here, for some reason it doesn't curl - it just has a little wave in the center." They also have green and red ti leaves, papaya plants which are doing well, and plumeria that bloomed profusely last summer. "One plumeria is seeding - giving me little seeds. Isn't that wonderful of it?" the Hawaiian girl rejoices. HOW DIFFICULT is it to grow these tropical plants in California? The question is often asked. "Not at all", says Lani. "We plant in shreddings from the fern trees. We water the orchids and the anthuriums once a day because they dry out fast. Otherwise they need no special care." Baskets made from fern tree trunks add a pictureesque touch to the garden. (Independant Press-Telegram, April 19, 1959, p. 110)

6. LANI MOORE: Avalon's Hawaiian Princess
Moore was born in Hawaii. She fell in love with Catalina in the 1960s. Recently, the former Catalina resident, no 82, looked back at her time in Avalon.
If there is a sense of "The Aloha Spirit" on Catalina Island, it may have something to do with Avalon's own "Hawaiian Princess", Madeline (Lani) Hooululani Moore. She has a large family and an even larger number of friends and people who care about her. Moore has three children (two of whom still live on Catalina), 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. From 1968 to 1991, Moore owned and operated the Pancake Cottage in Avalon. She has remained one of the most beloved citizens of the tiny island village of Avalon. "We are all her friends here on the island," said Jane Stevens, one of Moore's closest friends. "Whenever we go out riding on a golf cart, people come running up to her and give her a hug. Everyone loves Lani." Moore, 82, who still lives on the isalnd, grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. "She is a very soft-spoken lady with a very good sense of humor," Stevens said. "She danced the Hula beautifully, even up to about a year ago. She also loves to play golf and used to play often with (former Avalon Mayor) Ralph Morrow's wife Pat. Moore attended Mid Pacific Institute where she could see bomber planes coming through the mountains and down to Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. "We could see the smoke and the planes in the sky," she said. "It was very scary." In 1945, Moore began dancing hula professionally at major hotels in Waikiki. She also starred in "The Arthur Godfrey Show" and danced on horseback at the rodeo. Moore visited Catalina for the first time in the early 1960's with her family. She said it was like "falling in love at first sight". She bought the restaurant, The Pancake Cottage, in 1968, changing the name to "Lani's Pancake Cottage." She later purchased a second restaurant in Maui, Hawaii, by the same name. Both restaurants were favorites of visitors and residents of their respective islands. According to family members, there was time when she also owned the local taxicab stand, the Orange Julius (currently Coney Isalnd) and Lani's Pancake Cottage all the same time. She created the famous Chef's Mess and sold Hawaiian, Chinese favorites from the Orange Julius Stand and special burgers for 25 cents. Moore has been a member of the Hawaiian Club "Hale O Na Alii" for more than 64 years. Hale O Na Alii means: House of Royalty, it does not mean she is a direct descendant of King Kamehameha. Moore said that she sees her royalty connection as being very thin. "Everyone who has Hawaiian blood is related somewhere along the line to the Hawaiian royal family." Moore said. "For me, it's just something fun and not a serious thing." When she was not working, Moore said she loved to play golf. She was a member of the Women's Golf Club and had served as its president. She was also an active member for many years of the Eastern Star Civic Club. Moore has recently struggled with her health. Family members have been staying by her side. However, her health seemed to rally early this week. "I feel much better than I have for a while over the last three days," Moore said. She recalled her days on Catalina fondly. "I didn't like to swim much here on Catalina...not like I did in Hawaii where the water is much warmer," she said. "But I loved to go fishing. After work I would grab my pole and go down to the pier and fish and maybe catch one or two." Moore said her life has been a good one. "I have no regrets," she said. "It's been a wonderful life." (The Catalina Isalnder, Nov. 28, 2008, p. 1+9) [w/photos]
