Leominster Man 1st Area Casualty in Korean War
Capt. Richard J. Andrews, Bombardier, Wounded; Decorated in War II
Leominster, July 10 - Capt. Richard J. Andrews, 27, of Pearl street is alive today because of the skill and quick thinking of two buddies, Capt. Dale P. Simpson of Sweetwater, Texas, and Staff Sgt Davan C. Adsit of Watertown, NY. The lead bombardier with the 8th army air force stationed outside of Yokohama, Japan, was seriously wounded while serving in Korea according to a telegram received my his mother, Mrs. Mary Andrews. He is the first Korean war casualty in this area. But although the telegram signed by chief of staff Gen. Hoyt S. Vanderberg, USAF, said his condition was not critical, the story of his accident on July 6 is another matter. Four days ago the three fliers took their B-26 bombers on a low level bombing and strafing mission south of Suwon. A shell ripped through the cockpit. It smashed the jaw and severed the jugular vein of the Bombardier, Andrews. Glass and shell fragments [---] Simpson’s hands. Simpson thrust a first aid compress against Andrew’s throat, meanwhile flying the plane. He called gunner Adsit to help. While Adsit held the compress, Simpson dropped bombs and rockets on his target and headed full speed for home. At their base, doctors said Capt. Andrews was in “amazingly good condition.” This morning, Capt. Andrews’ mother said her son is being flown to Washington for hospitalization. She said his wife, the former Mary Anita Passmore of Houston, Tex., telephoned her from Japan to say that Capt. Andrews was being flown to Walter Reed hospital for treatment. The wife was an army nurse in World War II. The couple have two children, John Hollis, 3, and Mary Margaret, three months. They have been living in Yokohama. Capt. Andrews was also a lead bombardier in World War II, making 39 missions in the European theater. He was decorated with the Air Medal with clusters. He has also been decorated by the Chinese government for his work in training flyers during the war. Capt. Andrews was discharged with the rank of major. A graduate of Leominster high school class of 1940, Capt. Andrews became an aviation cadet under the sponsorship of the Leominster lodge of Elks. (Fitchburg Sentinel, July 10, 1950, p. 1)8. Obit: Lt.
