7. TAKING FIRST REAL VACATION
Mrs. Hart Leaves Today For California For First Extended Rest In 20 Years
WIDELY KNOWN
Makes Trip To Visit Daughter, Wife Of Gene Morgan, Screen Actor In Cal.
Mrs. Katherine Hart, for 20 years proprietor of the Linwood Hotel, for the first time in two decades will leave for an extended period of time the modest hostelry which has been her home and place of business. She will have with her a traveling bag, the gift of 75 friends presented at a recent bon voyage party. Shortly after 6 o’clock tonight, she boards the Minute Man express for Toledo and later she will detrain at Los Angeles for an extended visit with her daughter, Rachel Hart Morgan, of Santa Monica, Calif., wife of Gene Morgan, well known screen character man. Accompanying Mrs. Hart will be her daughter-in-law, Mrs Evelyn Hart, who will accompany the party as far as Toledo. There the older Mrs. Hart will meet the mother of Gene Morgan, and both mothers will visit their children in Santa Monica. Mrs. Morgan, formerly Rachel Hart, is widely known by a host of friends in Leominster. It has been many years that she has been urging her mother to visit her in California. But the task of inducing Mrs. Hart, who was bom, reared, and lived her entire life in Leominster to date, was not an easy one.
TO JOIN MRS. MORGAN
It is only since she has relinquished many of her business duties ahd had the promise of making half of the trip with Mrs. Morgan that she finally considered it. "l have fed the rich and the poor,” said Mrs. Hart, speaking in a reminiscent.mood, “and running a hotel has been an education in itself. One encounters all types of personalities and all kinds of people. My experience has been long and
happy. however, and now that I am to lay aside my duties for a time, I can say that people are for the most part good."
It is a happy philosophy of life, a broad and generous nature, and a genial disposition, that carried on even through the depths of the depiction, that has won for Mrs. Hart respect and friendship of so many people. During the terrors of the depression, when Jobs were few and hundreds of the jobless were walking the street, there was many a warm dinner handed out over the time-worn oaken tables which was never paid for, according to those who know Mrs. Hart best. "There were times when finances were a little shaky," said Mrs. Hart, smiling today at the tribulations of these times, “but I am glad to say that no one was ever refused.’’
Gene Morgan, who has supported in character roles some of the leading actors of the screen, has become a name actor himself. His flare for comedy has alsqf been discovered. He started his career as a newsboy and has visited in Leominster with his wife several times. Mrs. Morgan, as Miss Hart, was well known in amateur theatricals here and was selected to play the leading feminine role in a motion picture that was made in this city. Later she appeared on the musical comedy stage. (Leominster Daily Enterprise, Aug. 19, 1937, p. 6)
