2. Mr. Dennis Bates is confined to the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, Sherbrooke for treatment of burns he received sometime ago. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. (Stanstead Journal, Oct. 19, 1972)

3. Dennis Bates of Cowansville, changed his option and pleaded guilty to charges of hit and run and criminal negligence causing bodily injury in Cowansville. May 5. 1976 Crown attorney Noiseux told the court it was a dastardly crime “He was atthe intersection of Main St., and Boulevard Jean Jacques Bertrand when he hit a motorcycle and the driver fell to the ground He got out and saw the injured man, then got behind the wheel and drove off without offering any help A second car came by and saw the motorcycle but not the driver and struck him; which resulted in fractures to both wrists, one arm. one leg, and his clavicle. Bates is fortunate he is not charged with criminal negligence causing death in the operation of a motor vehicle. “He has a prior criminal record on charges of a car theft and fraud This was a cold-blooded and completely inexcusable crime and I have no alternative but to insist on 18 months in prison,” Mr. Noiseux con eluded Defence lawyer Claude Hamann said “My client was drunk when the accident occurred He has a criminal record and he panicked as he had no insurance and fled the scene He later learned his victim was ospitalized in Montreal and tried, to no avail, to contact him Remorse set in and he gave himself up to the police “He has a regular job and is supporting his common law wife and their child At the same time he is paying off his creditors and if he is incarcerated they will be penalized as he will not be able to fulfill his obligations, adding a further burden to society I beg the court order the preparation of a presentence report to give the tribunal all the data needed to impose a just sentence and I sincerely hope my client will be allowed his freedom during preparation of the report Mr Noiseux then argued since the accused had pleaded guilty he should be incarcerated pendingp reparation of the report Judge Bernard Legare freed Bates and adjourned sentencing to Feb. 20. (The Sherbrooke Record, Feb. 17, 1978, p. 11)

4. 13th conviction for drunk driving
Denis Bates will have to wait until Nov. 4 to learn how much jail time he’ll face for his 13th conviction for drunk driving. Bates pleaded guilty at the Granby courthouse Wednesday. This after being stopped in the parking lot of the Bar Chez Valmont last Sunday. Police found him sleeping in his car with the motor running and the lights on. With the legal limit at 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, Bates registered 211 milligrams and 193 milligrams on separate tests. Bates’ has been stopped for impaired driving no less than 13 times, dating back to 1980. Following his arrests he has received $600 in fines as well as jail sentences of two weeks, one, three and six months. Surprisingly Bates has never been in an accident. The repeat drunk driver was released on conditions, among which were an obligation to stay away from bars, not drink and not drive for the next ten years. Quebec Court judge Donald Bissonnette will hand Bates his sentence, which will likely include stiff jail time, on Nov. 4 (Sherbrooke Record, April 26, 2002, p. 1)

- JEAN DELIA O’CONNOR
With great sadness and heavy hearts the family of Jean O’Connor announce her peaceful passing on February 14, 2014 at Ste. Rose Dulac, Manitoba. Born September 18, 1918 in Limerick, Saskatchewan to Clifford and Elizabeth Sealy (nee Murray). As a young girl the family moved to Rainy River, Ontario. Later, she met and married Francis O’Connor and started raising their family of three boys and a girl. The family eventually moved to Fort Frances, Ontario. Mom started working at Rainycrest (Nursing Home) until her retirement. At the age of 70 Mom decided to move to Ste. Rose to be near to her brother Mac and wife, Val. She had a great love of horses, whether riding or going to the race tracks and always placing her bets on the winning horse! Mom enjoyed fishing, even if you caught the fish, it was considered her catch. Mom loved dogs, especially her little Mitzy who she loved well into her late seventies. In her earlier years she traveled with twin sister Jess to the U.S.A. Then down to eastern Ontario to sons Bob and Larry and their families for some sightseeing and sailing. Back to northwestern Ontario with son Ralph (Debbie) to fish, then off to daughter Joyce for a good visit! Mom loved all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were so special to her in every way. Mom was the greatest seamstress, she could make something out of nothing. She made beautiful quilts, did needlepoint, knitting and crochet. Her artwork was awesome! Many of her art pieces hung on her walls for all to see. Mom was also born with a green thumb when it came to gardening...the veggies to the beautiful flowers everywhere! We will all miss you and all the precious memories.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Elizabeth Sealy; twin sister, Jessie (Morris) Waranuk; brothers, John (Mac) Sealy, Walter Sealy; husband, Francis O’Connor.
