9. Memo From Past and Present
A telephone call was received from Mrs. June Harding on Friday morning to notify villagers of the death of her aunt, Mrs. Violet Bell, aged 82, who passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital on January 7th. A great-granddaughter of John Millar who founded New Dundee in 1830. Mrs. Bell was one of about 50 descendants of John and his brother Frederick G. Millar (who built the flour mill and laid out the village plan) who came by car and chartered bus to attend the 150th anniversary celebration here in August 1980. She assisted in the tree planting ceremony at the community park along with four others of the Millar family from Halifax, Rochester, N.Y. and the Toronto area.
A native of Toronto, Mrs. Bell was the daughter of Ann Millar who was married to John Bryan of Whitby. Her mother was the daughter of James William Millar, the only son of John and Jane Millar who also had six daughters, namely; Margaret, Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, Janet and Ellen. Margaret Millar, who was married to Robert Lindsay of Brantford, had a daughter Jennie who as a child was one of the first persons to talk on the telephone back in 1876 since the Lindsay Family were neighbors of Alexander Graham Bell.
Mrs. Violet Bell is survived by one brother, Earl Bryan of Toronto, the last one of his generation and by five children - Mrs. Rena Jones of Willowdale; Mrs. Beverly Salmon of Don Mills; Mrs. Marjorie Sorrell of Port Hope; Herbert of Stouffville and David of Thornhill. The funeral servive was held at St. Patrick's Anglican Church, Willowdale at 11 a.m. on Monday.
Mrs. Bell had visited the village on several occasions since the early 1960's. Prior to that there was no known local contact with members of the Millar family until the late 1950's. A chance meeting on a C.P.R. passenger train en route from Detroit to Toronto between New Dundee correspondent Miriam Sararu s and David Bell was responsible for the family's later visits here. An important link with the past has been broken with the passing of Mrs. Bell although her children's interest in the village continues. This was evidenced by a telephone call from her daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Sorrell on Sunday afternoon also to inform villagers of her mother's death. (The Ayr News, Jan. 13, 1982, p. 7)

Herbert McLean Bell enlisted in the West Indies Regiment at the age of 17. When his parents found out, he was de-enlisted and sent to Boston to study engineering. He however wanted to serve in the military and went to Canada and joined the First Depot Battalion New Brunswick regiment in 1918. 4. Owner wants to rebuild burned-out Stouffville home
Herb Bell lives in an apartment above a barn that overlooks the spot where his house once stood.
Ask him what it’s like to look out the window and see nothing but land where his house stood for 38 years and he becomes noticeably emotional as he holds back tears.
“The emotions of my family and friends, we all feel a great loss ...” he told The Sun-Tribune almost three-months to the day when his Vandorf Road home burned to the ground.
No one was home at the time. Mr. Bell, 78, had gone to Scarborough with his dog Wicki to watch a choral performance.
The fire remains under investigation, said Carol Gravelle, a spokesperson for the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office. York Regional Police are also involved.
No arrests have been made nor have any charges been laid in connection with the May 4 fire, according to police spokepserson Const. Rebecca Boyd.
The exact value of the home remains unknown due to the years of accumulated items inside.
However, the actual structure has been estimated to be worth between $500,000 and $1 million, according to Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire Chief Rob McKenzie, noting this is based on the area and current market values.
“You make a list and you absolutely cannot remember every item that has been lost. Although some is irreplaceable, some have a replacement cost,” he said.
“One has to dwell on the real values we have and accept the material losses and just go forward,” Mr. Bell said.
Moving forward consists of rebuilding and Mr. Bell wants to do so within the next six months.
“I feel the replacement home will be a beautiful structure,” he said, adding he is already working with an architect on the design.
Mr. Bell’s friends and family, he said, are not sure it’s a good idea.
“I’ve always liked to be physically active and I don’t think I could survive in a condo or townhouse setting. I love my property and wish to remain there,” he said.
Following news of the fire, residents immediately donated clothes, food and money to Mr. Bell, who was insured, but left with nothing but the clothes he was wearing, the truck he was driving and his dog.
Luckily Mr. Bell had a second home in Musselman’s Lake he used to rent out that was vacated shortly before the fire. He lived there until late last month when the barn apartment’s renovations were completed.
“It makes me realize the true values of one’s life is the essence of friendship and support, which no fire can destroy,” Mr. Bell said. (Aug. 2012)

1. Obit: Jacquelyn C. Sutton, 25, of North Conway, died tragically Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after being struck by a vehicle while jogging. Born in North Conway, the daughter of Charles and Elaine (Prince) Sutton, she was a lifelong resident of North Conway. Jacquie graduated from Kennett High School in Conway with honors in 2003 and St. Michael’s College cum laude in Burlington, Vt. with a triple major in psychology, sociology and anthropology. Jacquie had both a strong drive for academics and an innate sense to help others. From an early age her gift in academics was evident. From spelling bee champ to English awards, National Honor Society and later graduating cum laude at St.Michael’s college. As a volunteer, she had been a member of the Kennett Key Club, participated in Angles and Elves and ushered at Our Lady of the Mountains beside her late grandfather Donald Prince. While in college, her passion for helping others continued and was evident through her participation in several college sponsored service trips, the M.O.V.E. program, and Best Buddies. She had worked as a social worker at Lund Family Center in Burlington and was currently preparing to pursue her master’s degree. At the end of the day, Jacquie, to those who knew her, was full of life and wit. She was always quick to come up with a joke or a catch phrase when you needed one, and even when you didn’t. She had an uncanny ability to say what others were thinking, and her perspective on life was refreshing. She loved figure skating with her best friend, target shooting with her brothers, and catching a movie with her sisters. She enjoyed running, music, the ocean and hanging out with her St. Michael’s College friends. But, more than anything, Jacquie loved her family, especially her nephews and nuppies (nieces/nephew puppies). The family includes: her parents, Charles and Elaine Sutton, of North Conway; four siblings, Carolyn Iorio and her husband James of Hyde Park, NY, Charles C. Sutton, Jr. of North Conway, John C. Sutton and his wife Maura of North Conway and Katelyn M. Sutton of North Conway; her maternal grandmother, Claire Prince of North Conway; two nephews, James G. Iorio III and Thomas C. Iorio, both of Hyde Park and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery in North Conway. Mrs. Elza Kilroy, teacher of the Indian Flat public schools, gave a Halloween Hard Times party in honor of her school pupils and their parents at the Kilroy home on Lost Hill. It proved to be a most enjoyable affair and the thirty odd pupils and their elders went home singing the praises of the hospitable teacher. Numerous novel games were played having the general tone of “hard times,” excepting the refreshments, which smacked of prosperity. Music and other past times also helped to wile away the time all too swiftly. Mrs. Kilroy certainly proved herself an adept entertainer. (The Morning Union, Nov. 5, 1919, p. 5)

15. 1959: “As I Remember Christmas”, Elza Kilroy
Christmas Eve was the big night. It was a family night, and the kids would decorate the tree. Instead of electric lights we had candles, about four or five inches long, that clipped to the tree. People never gave the fire hazard a thought, and I don’t remember any fires from Christmas tree candles except maybe somebody’s curtain burned up. Christmas was simple and everyone had a joyous time, a 4 bit (50cent) Christmas tree was bought and on many occasions we would go up into the hills or side of Deer Creek and cut our own making a Sunday picnic. The base was the end of a fruit box, no fancy holders or gadgets made of metal or aluminum. A beautiful tree it was when a few candle holders bearing white small candles were attached to the various branches together with popcorn strung on white thread taken from Mom’s sewing bag. There was no midnight mass in those days. People went to church on Christmas day. And there was a lot of visiting from house-to-house on Christmas day. We’d have wine and fruitcake at people’s houses. Cornish groups such as the Grass Valley Cornish choir would also sing in the streets or go out to serenade the patients at the county hospital - a custom which has not been entirely forgotten. There use to be a series of living Christmas trees throughout Grass Valley and Nevada City. People would go from street to street night after night about 20 years ago to see the lights. (Citizen Christmas Book, Dec. 23, 1959 and The Independent)

5. BIO:
Elza John Kilroy was born on the Kuster's wheat ranch in Yuba County near the Nevada County line March 6, 1896, to William and Susan Kuster Kilroy. His maternal grandfather owned the property, which is now part of Beale Air Force Base. The old ranch house once served as the officer's club at Camp Beale. Elza never had any recollection of either of his parents. His mother died within months of his birth. His father, a Nevada City police officer working the position of night watchman, was stabbed to death in the line of duty in 1899; Elza was 3 years old. The youth grew up in Nevada City as a member of the James Flewellan family and attended the old Washington School, which was on the site of the present Nevada City Elementary School at Main and Cottage streets. Elza earned pocket money by delivering newspapers, doing odd jobs at the Miners Foundry, and hauling stove wood in a horse-drawn wagon to customers in the Blue Tent area of rural Nevada City. While still a teenager he moved to Sacramento, where he worked briefly before returning to Nevada City to begin his career in 1914 with the United States Post Office. He was just 18 years old. Here he was a fixture until illness forced a disability retirement in 1946. On June 26, 1919, Elza Kilroy and Luvia Worthington were united in marriage at 318 Drummond Street, Nevada City, where the couple would spend their entire lives. It was in this house that Luvia was born to William and Nellie Worthington Sept. 24, 1899. The house came into the Worthington family around 1873 when Luvia's grandfather bought the property that remained in the immediate family for some 110 years.
A son, William, was born to the couple in 1922. Bill and his wife, Beverly, are the parents of two sons and still reside on Nevada Street. In July 1969, Elza and Luvia Kilroy celebrated their Golden Wedding at the Nevada City Veteran's building on North Pine Street. I covered the event and wrote this account for The Independent: "Elza and Luvia Kilroy celebrated their Golden Wedding Sunday ... and what an event it was! "Friends came from around the state and the nation to wish the couple many happy returns of their Golden Day. "Nevada City's Congressman Harold Johnson came ... (as did) Sacramento's Mayor Richard Marriott, who recalled as a boy eating bread and syrup in the Kilroy's kitchen after fishing all day in Hirschman's Pond. "Master of Ceremonies Bob Paine read letters and telegrams from friends and dignitaries, including Governor Ronald Reagan congratulating the Kilroys and praising them for their years of public service to Nevada City. Some 300 friends and relatives passed along the reception line during the afternoon." Elza Kilroy's community service began around the time of the first World War when, in 1914, he joined the Nevada City Volunteer Fire Department, the year he went to work for the U.S. Post Office. He served as chief engineer in 1921-22 and would remain a lifetime member, both active and retired, all his life. Elza was a prominent founding father of Nevada City's first Rotary Club and was a lifetime member. His work on endless Chamber of Commerce committees was legendary. It was said that if Kilroy did not work on the 4th of July Committee "he was probably too ill to stand." He served on the Nevada City Planning Commission for 14 years. Elza was one of the first directors of the newly formed Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in the early 1960s. He was active in the formation of the Nevada County Historical Society and wrote a number of its bulletins. The society named him Citizen of the Year in 1955. Kilroy was one of the original members of the Liberal Arts Commission that raised funds to purchase and save California's oldest theater, the Nevada Theatre. The LAC has since become the Nevada Theatre Commission. He also took part in Golden Days, the variety show that kicked off the fund-raising drive in 1965. He was a member of and active in the many charitable activities of myriad fraternal organizations, including: Hydraulic Parlor No. 56, Native Sons of the Golden West, 65-year member; California Congress of Parents and Teachers, lifetime member; Nevada City Elks Lodge No. 518; Sons in Retirement; and E Clampus Vitus Chapter No. 10, Nevada City. There were many other organizations that benefited by his membership throughout the years. E Clampus Vitus honored Elza in 1958 by naming him clampatriarch of Chapter No. 8591. This was a lifetime honor and it carried forward when Chapter No. 8591 combined with Chapter No. 10. Elza and Luvia Kilroy were honored in 1979 when the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce named them "Mr. and Mrs. Nevada City." At Christmas, the Kilroys sent cards with historic Nevada County scenes to their many friends. I considered myself honored to have been included on the "A" list. Bob Wyckoff, (11 Jan 2003, The Union)

6. The Kilroy name is one that has been prominent in Nevada County throughout the years, based primarily on the exploits of two men - William Kilroy and his son, Elza. Both gave their lives - one literally, the other figuratively- to Nevada County. The earliest Kilroy found in the Nevada County records is William Kilroy, who married Bridget Cox in 1857. They would have five children: William and Joseph, both listed as miners in the 1895 Nevada County Business Directory; along with a third son, John, who also lived locally; and two Kilroy daughters, who lived out of Nevada County. In the late 1890s the younger William, now grown to manhood, took the position of night watchman for Nevada City. It apparently wasn't a job William Kilroy wished for the long term, as he mentioned to friends his desire to resign the position shortly. However, before he had a chance to do this he, had a run-in with Ed Moore, a man known to be desperate. It was just after midnight on March 31, 1899, when the two men met at Pine and Broad streets in Nevada City. Ed Moore apparently had some words with Kilroy earlier. He accused Kilroy of dogging his steps, cursed the officer and dared Kilroy to arrest him. At this point, apparently without any provocation, Moore pulled a revolver and fired three or four shots into Kilroy, who didn't have a chance to draw his weapon. Moore fled, leaving Kilroy dying in the street. The sheriff, two deputies and a posse took off after Moore. Moore was eventually captured and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Officer Kilroy was popular, and the Methodist Church was filled to overflowing for his services. They were made especially poignant by the fact that Kilroy, a widower, left his 3-year-old son Elza Kilroy behind, an orphan. Elza Kilroy would become as honored in the way he led his life as his father did in losing his. Elza Kilroy worked for the Nevada City Post Office for 32 years. He was greatly interested in Nevada City affairs and worked tirelessly in improving the town. Yearly he sat on the Fourth of July committee and was once a parade grand marshal. Kilroy spearheaded the effort to raise money to restore the old Nevada City Theatre and was on the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital board of directors. His wife, Luvia, taught school for 32 years at Nevada City Elementary. A large cross on Drummond Street in Nevada City, lighted every Christmas, was erected by Elza Kilroy in 1932. It is still illuminated each year at holiday time. Elza Kilroy put in so much of his time and energy to make Nevada City and Nevada County a better place that the Elza Kilroy Award would eventually be established. It is given each year by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce to a person who exhibits outstanding community service. Elza died in 1981, as full of honors and as sorely missed by the community he served as had been his father. Bill Kilroy, 78, the son of Elza Kilroy, and Bill's wife, Beverly, are the senior Kilroy family in Nevada County today. Bill Kilroy lives in Nevada City, retired after 25 years with Pacific Bell Systems. He and his wife have two sons, Kent and Bob, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bill Kilroy was in the Army in World War II and served with the military police in Germany. Bill's son Kent Kilroy owns and operates Kilroy's Auto Dismantling, just south of Grass Valley. He and his wife Kim also have two sons: Scott, who lives locally, and Corey, who lives in Auburn. Their daughter, Jenika, is a junior at Nevada Union High School. Bob Kilroy is retired and lives in Nevada City. He has two children Michael and Katie. When asked what the Kilroy men like to do, Beverly Kilroy said that her husband likes to "Just putter, putter, putter on old cars." "As for my son, Kent, who owns the dismantling company, he just likes to work, work, work." Prior to the fairgrounds decided to shut down the dirt track, Kent Kilroy ran sprint cars and super stocks. "Thank God he doesn't do that anymore!" his mother said. Compared to other Nevada County families that date back to the early years, the Kilroys are not nearly as numerous. But what they lack in numbers they have made up for in what they gave to the community - their lives. (25 Nov 2005, The Union)
