JOHN STICKNEY, b. in Newbury, July 14, and bapt. July 20, 1740, in First Church, Newbury; was m. Nov. 11, 1762 by Rev. Mr. Lowell, to Mary, dau. of Benjamin Pidgeon. She d. about 1835, in Epping, N. H., aged over 80 years. John Stickney, 5th, was on the Roll of the Third Co. of Foot in Newbury, commanded by Major Joseph Coffin, 1757. [Mass. Archives.]
April 24, 1765. John Stickney, and Mary Stickney, both of Newbury, heirs to Amos Stickney, late of N., dec'd, release all claim on a piece of land, to John Titcomb. [Essex Deeds, 118: 45.]
May 27, 1766. He, of Newbury, husbandman, Jr., son of Amos Stickney, dec'd, with wife Mary, sell for £37, 6s. 8d., to Daniel Farnham of Newburyport, 7 acres, 4 rods of pasture land in Newbury, adjoining March's farm, and is his portion, which was set off to him, of his father Amos Stickney's [58] estate. 2£ acres of it he sold to his father-in-law, Benjamin Pidgeon, bounded S. on said Farnham's land, which he bought of Michael Pike of Newburyport, rigger, and his wife Mary, "my sister, and which was set off to her." [Ibid, 121 : 86.]
Last sale was Nov. 23, 1772, when he is Jr., of Newbury, yeoman, and with wife Mary, sells 19 acres of land in Newbury, bounded S. W., on South St., &c. [Ibid, 131 : 19.]
On his marriage in Newbury, 1762, he is styled 5th, but after the incorporation of Newburyport, Junior. He disposed of the homestead which had descended to him from Amos [2] , the first
settler of Newbury, and which had been in the family over one hundred and nine years, and removed to Epping, N. H., about 1772, where he bought a farm. Tradition says he was
wounded in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and was lame ever after. John Stickney died in Epping, N. H. Adm. on the estate of John Stickney, late of Raymond, N. H., granted to Mary Stickney, and Josiah Fogg, Esq. of Epping, May 29, 1776. Widow's dower set off, Nov. 26, 1776, and Administrators granted license to sell Real Estate. Account of Adm., Feb., 1778. Item—Expense to Newbury several times. For bringing up children under 7 years of age. [Rockingham, N. H., Prob.].
