"A cemetery on the property, [ The Martinette Farm] bears witness to the farm's rich history: once used by the region's English-speaking settlers, it contains the tomb of Vester Cleveland, co-founder of the town of Coaticook with Richard Baldwin in1818." (http://www.lafermemartinette.com/english/farm.html)
The farm is about 10-12 KM East from the town of Coaticook, PQ.5. Mr. Richard Baldwin Sr., came from Barnston Pinacle on foot and went to the place which is currently Coaticook. He cleared a corner close to the brook, in the place which currently is the building, Case of Coaticook. Vester Cleaveland helped him and they cut down enormous pines and threw them towards the river with the intent of making a dam not far from the current cement bridge. During this year, the two Walter brothers and William Buckland made a clearing opposite the current station. Two other pioneers, Elias Parkhust and a brother-in-law of Buckland began a clearing, closer to the line of Barford.
Richard Baldwin and Vester Cleaveland returned in spring of the following year and finished the dam. They then built a mill.
In 1826 Cabe Ingraham made a clearing which is currently the parish Saint-Marc de Coaticook. The first school was built in 1828, on the clearing of Cabe Ingraham. The first teacher was Sophia Chesley, wife of Richard Baldwin, whom holds the honor of the true founder of Coaticook. Notes:
1. Cleveland Cemetery
On the Martineau road, are the last traces of the old Cleveland farm. Sylvester Cleveland, commonly called Vester, was born in Canterbury in Connecticut on August 1, 1780. It will be on this earth in 1801. He married Relief Converse, born as in Spencer Massachusetts February 22, 1783. The couple joined the Methodist Church. The land that Cleveland operates will belong to his descendants until 1948.
A burial place was built on the family plot of lot 15 of the 5th Range of the Township of Barnston. It seems that the first burial to take place was that of Lydia Bemis, wife of Jude Converse, in 1808. This woman is apparently the mother of Relief. However no visible trace remains today of this burial.
The stones can still be seen today have been moved from their place of origin to be grouped on a concrete slab. These together mainly members of Cleveland such as Vester family and his wife Relief, as well as some of their children, grandchildren, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. The oldest burial on the stelae is Ruth Cleveland died in 1829, registered on the same monument as his parents Vester and Relief themselves who died respectively in April 1855 and in August 1853. This stele, realized in the granite, is probably not the original stone as the granite was not yet used at the time of their death. This is possibly a stone engraved at a later time, such a memorial stone for example. The oldest gravestone yet readable, manufactured in soft marble, owned by Walter Hanson, who died in 1831, at the age of 11 months. He was the son of Micajah Hanson and Cynthia Cleveland, and therefore the grandson of Vester and Relief.
However, the cemetery was not only for the relatives of the family. Formerly known under the names of "Poor Farm" or "Farm Town", the family plot was also burials of the poor, having no means for a decent burial or no place to bury. Of simple stone or wooden cross, they disappeared, marking the location of their burial. It seems that no record of burials were held by the Cleveland family and it therefore cannot know today how many people have been in Earth in this cemetery. The exact location of the place of burial, 1808-1901 activity, seems impossible to locate.
71. Relief Converse was born on 22 Feb 1783 in Spencer, Worcester Co.,MA. She died on 19 Oct 1852 in Barnston, Stanstead Co., PQ. Relief was buried 1 on 25 Oct 1852 in Cleveland Farm, Barnston, Stanstead Co., PQ. [Parents]
