6. Garden Grove Wedding Was Pretty Affair
A beautiful wedding occurred Sunday at 12:10 o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Hayes In Garden Grove, when their son Willard. and Miss Evelyn Chafe of Orange, were united in marriage by the Rev. Hurlburt, pastor of the Garden Grove Baptist church. Miss Leta Hayes, sister of the groom, and Alfred Chafe, brother of the bride, were their only attendants. The bride was lovely in a gown of beige crepe with corsage bouquet of white sweet peas, pink rose buds and fern. Miss Leta Hayes wore a lovely gown of powder blue chiffon with corsage of pink sweet peas and fern. The spacious rooms were banked with pink and white carnations and pink gladioli. After the ceremony a three-course luncheon was served to the following guests: Fred Chafe and son, Alfred, father and brother of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Chafe, and two children: Mrs. Hodges, all of Los Angeles; George Sumner, of Pasadena, Miss Grace Eddy and Miss Anna Stiles of Orange. 2. FORCED OUT INTO COLD FOR HOURS WITH SCANT ATTIRE
TAUNTON, Dec. 18 -- Mrs Carrie E. Cash, 24, , wife of Frank E. Cash, School st. North Dighton, was forced to leave her home in the bitter cold attired in a wrapper and overshoes, and remained outdoors for several hours until a neighbor took her into the house. This was brought out in District Court yesterday when the husband was arraigned on charges of drunkenness. He was adjudged guilty of the two complaints and one was filed and the other resulted in probation for the defendant. According to the testimony of Deputy Sheriff John Synan and officer Gordon, both of Dighton, on the night of Dec. 15, which was bitterly cold, Mrs Cash was forced by her husband to leave the house. They stated she walked around for about two hours and it was midnight before Mrs. Cash found a neighbor who would take her in. Officer Gordon said he went to the Cash home and tried to persuade Cash to allow Mrs. Cash to return, but the man refused.

She was the widow of William Golliff and Joseph Marchand. She died at Catholic Memorial Home, Fall River. She was born in Dighton a daughter of the late Frank and Carrie (Gaspar) Cash and had lived in Fall River most of her life and had lived in both Dighton and Westport as well. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Thomas Street, Fall River. She was a homemaker and was the owner of the former Modern Lunch. Mrs. Marchand volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Store for 10 years, enjoyed crocheting, and spending time with her family. Survivors include a daughter Ann Marchand of Westport, 3 sons: William Golliff of South Yarmouth, F. Robert Golliff of Yarmouth, and Allan Marchand of Tiverton, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Kathy Robbins and sister of the late Frank “Buddy” Cash, John Cash, and Ella Spratt. Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Saturday at 9 AM from the SOUTH COAST FUNERAL HOME, 1555 Pleasant Street followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, 529 Eastern Ave., Fall River. NEW PORT RICHEY - A New Port Richey woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Regency Park Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Irma Golliff Melanson, 70, of 8225 Arevee Drive, Lot 356, was driving her 1981 white Ford Granada station wagon out of the Carlton Arms apartments about a half mile south of Orchid Lake Road at 3:10 p.m. when she attempted to turn left onto Regency Park, Trooper Steve D. Wheeler said.
Mrs. Melanson's car was struck by a 1977 brown Ford pickup truck being driven northbound by Mark Arthur Kolling, 26, of 9806 Middlecoff Drive in New Port Richey. Kolling's truck hit Mrs. Melanson at the driver's side door and spun the car around. Both cars came to a stop in the middle of the road. A helicopter from Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg flew to the accident scene and was prepared to take Mrs. Melanson to that hospital. But because of the seriousness of her injuries, Mrs. Melanson was treated at the scene by paramedics before she was taken to Riverside Hospital in New Port Richey, Wheeler said. Mrs. Melanson was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:38 p.m. Wheeler said she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. A neighbor of Mrs. Melanson said she had been visiting some friends in Carlton Arms and was on her way home when the accident happened.
A news release issued by the Highway Patrol on Wednesday night said that Mrs. Melanson failed to yield the right of way and that the accident was alcohol related. No charges have been filed.
Kolling also was treated at the scene for injuries to his wrists and neck. He was treated and released from HCA Bayonet Point/Hudson Medical Center. Kolling was not wearing his seat belt.
The accident closed Regency Park Boulevard for about an hour.

LEOMINSTER - Irma (Golliff) Melanson, 70, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Leominster, was killed March 22 in a two-car accident in New Port Richey. She was the wife of P. Raymond Melanson. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Donald Melanson of Chelmsford and Phillip Melanson of Ashburnham; a daughter, Dina Johnson of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, Al Golliff of Dennis; a sister, Irene Davis of Fedhaven, Fla., 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Sutton, was killed in a car crash last year in Lunenburg.
She was born in Taunton, daughter of William and Ruth Golliff. Mrs. Melanson formerly was employed at General Electric Co. in Fitchburg and later at Rochdale Stores in Leominster and was a bookkeeper at the former Colony Tool and Die Co., which was owned by her husband.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St. Cremation was in Florida. Burial of ashes will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours at Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., are 7 to 9 tonight. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Joslin Diabetes Foundation, 1 Joslin Place, Boston. There was a GREAT fire which occurred within the St Louis National Archives building in St Louis, in 1973. The fire destroyed many of the individual veteran's records, but not ALL. Unit records survived; they are located in Maryland. I requested his records from St. Louis, but was told they were destroyed in the fire. What I know so far:

Allan J. Mulgrew was assigned to M Company 254th Infantry Regiment on 23 August 1945 just prior to the division returning to the US. He came from the 1175 Engineer Combat Group and was assigned to the 63rd Infantry Division for the purpose of accompanying the division back to the U.S in September 1945. Little is known about the soldiers returning to the US with the 63rd Infantry Division in that most of them did not serve with the division in combat, but were assigned only because they had enough "points" to return at this early date. It is possible that he was initially assigned in the 106th AAA (Antiaircraft Artillery) Group, and later with one of the battalions of the 1175th Engineer Combat Group.
The 1175th Engineer Combat Group was activated from the now surplus 106th AAA Group. It was composed of at least 3 Bns:
- The 367th Engineer Combat Battalion was constituted 19 October 1944 as the 367th Engineer Combat Battalion and activated 31 December 1944 in France. Possibly formed from the 406th AAA Gun Bn.
- The 369th Engineer Combat Battalion was formed 31 Dec 1944, Marignone France from personnel of the 215th AAA Gun Battalion (Semimobile) Credited with Central Europe and Rhineland Campaigns.
- The 370th Combat Engineer Battalion was formed from the 74th AAA Gun Bn on 31 December 1944 at Gignac, France. 370th`s location in August 1945 was Ulm, Germany.

- Camp Lucky Strike was situated in the town of Saint-Sylvian, 5 kilometers from Saint-Valery-en Caux, France. Its location was not selected by chance, but rather because the occupying German troops had constructed an airfield there in 1940 with a landing strip 1800 meters long and 50 meters wide. This airfield was one of the defensive elements of the Atlantic Wall: surveillance and coastal defenses were also a perfect starting point for attacks on southwest England. V-1 rocket launching ramps were installed at the beginning of 1944 in the woods surrounding the airfield. It was heavily bombed by the British throughout the war, but especially during the fighting which followed the June 1944 landings. In September 1944 American Engineer Corps troops took control of the area, repairing the landing strips and constructing the camp.
The camp became the most important military camp in Europe. It extended over 600 hectares (1 hectare = approximately 2 ½ acres). It was a mandatory port of entry for practically every American soldier, and 1½ million spent from a couple days up to 18 months there. It was the principal camp used for repatriated soldiers and liberated POWs, but also as a reception station for soldiers on leave. It was also a staging area for the Pacific Theater and - until August 10, 1945 - for the invasion of Japan. There were 100,000 men in the camp each day - 100,000 men to lodge, feed, train, and entertain. (Regarding repatriation, there were 6,000 daily departures by plane or boat from Le Havre, the only port liberated on the western coast that could accommodate large ships.) The first American troops arrived around Christmas 1944. They consisted of engineer units. Camp Lucky Strike was also made up of several satellite camps in the neighboring countryside. Camp Lucky Strike remained active until the end of 1945, and was officially closed in 1946.
The camp was like a U.S. town with theaters, hospitals, a PX, and gift shops, and it mainly consisted of more than 12,000 tents. (At times, more than 100,000 U.S. soldiers stayed there.) Most of the liberated American POW’s went through Lucky Strike on their way home to the United States. After the unconditional surrender of Germany, the camp was used to return troops to the USA via Le Havre.

He leaves two sons, Donald J. Melanson of Chelmsford and Philip A. Melanson of Ashburnham; a daughter, Dina P. Johnson of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, C. Alvin R. Golliff, 79, of South Dennis and Green Acres, Fla., died Jan. 1 at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Florence M. Golliff for 58 years. Mr. Golliff was born in Taunton.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant from 1943 to 1945 with the 36th Division 143rd Infantry. His tours of duties included Africa, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, southern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received medals of victory and good conduct, the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf clusters, Bronze Service Arrowheads and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon.
After moving to Cape Cod in the early 1950s, Mr. Golliff was a building contractor, insurance adjuster, real estate broker and owner of two restaurants and a motel. He was a notary public, 32nd degree Mason of Scottish Rite and a member of the American Legion, VFW and Elks. He enjoyed time with family, travel, Cape Cod beaches and helping those in need. Besides his wife, survivors include five children, William L. Jones, Nancy J. Roberts, JoAnn Ashfaq, Robert A. Golliff and Rhonda L. McGrail; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was employed by the accounting department of Falmouth Hospital for several years, went on to own and operate Chelsea's Restaurant in South Carolina and finally was the owner/operator of Admiral Insurance Agency Inc., Stuart, FL until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion. He was fond of classical music, enjoyed building computers, photography, cooking, loved sports and was an avid golfer. He always enjoyed having family and friends around. Most importantly, he treasured the time spent with his daughter and his grandsons. In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter: Tracie Dubuque and her husband, Don of Merrillville, IN; 2 grandsons: Jeffrey and Joseph Dubuque; 6 sisters: Ruthanna Smith, Theresa Andersen, Sandra Fobert, Rhonda McGrail, Joanne Ashfaq, and Nancy Roberts; 5 brothers: Bertrand C. Jones, Jr., Thomas J. Jones, Michael K. Jones, Joseph Folger and Robert Golliff; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was brother of the late David F. Jones. (2011)

Wilmer H. Comstock, 87, of Clarksburg, passed away on Feb. 18, 2013, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. Born in Stoughton, Massachusetts, he lived in North Brunswick before moving to Clarksburg in 1986. He was a World War II Navy Seabee veteran. Bill owned and operated Comstock Landscaping for 40 years prior to his employment at Millstone Elementary School.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 2004. He is survived by his son and two daughters, Wilmer Comstock Jr. of Nashville, TN, Linda Comstock of Clarksburg, and Jeannette Mueller of East Brunswick; and three grandchildren, Chelsea, Jordyn and Kimberly Mueller. Norman was a lifelong resident of Malden. He was a United States Navy Veteran during the Korean Conflict. Norman worked for many years at MIT as a video producer and then went on to work for Wang Laboratory. He was currently the president of the Linwood Seniors Club in Malden.
Norman was the devoted husband of 60 years to Mildred (Trulio) Lang. He was the beloved father of Norman J. Lang and his wife Tina of Chestnut Hill, David Lang of Malden and Suzan M. Racca and her husband James of Franklin. Norman was the cherished grandfather of Max and Austin Lang, and Andrew, Olivia, Michael and Grace Racca.

... Seven students were injured early yesterday when a car traveling from a Salem Teachers College dance and a station wagon collided on the Newburyport turnpike. Reported in critical condition at Melrose Hospital last night was Mildred Sullivan, 17-year-old Malden High Scholl senior. A call was issued for blood donors. She was returning from the dance with Richard Fitzgerald, 21, of Stoneham, said by police to have been the driver of the car, and Mildred Trulio, 16, and Edward Lucey, 18, both of Malden.
