7. Mr. and Mrs. LaPrelle Have Returned from Brief Honeymoon
Returning yesterday evening from San Diego where they had spent a delightful honeymoon weekend Mr. and Mrs. Harold J. LaPrelle today were resuming their duties, Mr. LaPrelle with Hockaday, Harlow and Phillips, and his bride in the plant department of the local telephone office. Only relatives and a very few intimate friends were present. Miss Ethel M. Chafe, daughter of Mrs. E. C. Brock, 501 Wellington Avenue, became the bride of Harold J. LaPrelle. The Rev. George A. Warmer read the service, for which the bride was smartly attired in golden brown silk crepe, with all costume details in the same rich shade, completed with a graceful corsage cluster of velvety Talisman roses, her favorite flower. Mrs. W. B. Hayes, also smart in brown with a flower corsage, was her sister’s honor matron while Mr. Hayes assisted Mr. LaPrelle as best man. There was only a brief interval at the church for the young couple to receive the good wishes of their guests, and then they sped away on their motor trip to San Diego. Returning yesterday, they went at once to the home awaiting them at 417 Vance Street last night. Mrs. LaPrelle met with a warm welcome at her office, where she found that her co-workers’ interest had taken concrete form of a complete set of pottery in poppy trail design in turquoise blue. Beattie was the former home of the bride and she had her schooling in that city. Since coming to Santa Ana she has been affiliated with Kappa Delta Phi sorority, in which she is the current bride. Mr. LaPrelle’s schooling was in Fort Wayne, Ind., where his mother still resides. (Santa Ana Register, Nov. 26, 1935, p. 12)

4. L. A. Warren, chief county probation officer, today was making plans to “clean up” Balboa. Just what steps he intends to take to rid the popular summer resort of moonshine liquor, much of which finds its way to boys and girls, he said, he is not making public, but declared today that “things were getting bad down there and it had to stop.” Saturday night, Warren, with two deputy sheriffs, detained some 40 boys and girls for questioning, regarding liquor and 20 of the youths were taken to the police station. Eighteen of these were allowed to go to their homes after questioning Harry La Prell, 20, 127 South Main Street, Santa Ana and Paul Breithaupt, 20, San Bernardino, each were lodged in jail, charged with possession of intoxicating liquor. Yesterday, before Judge W. A. Leonard, of the beach town, Breithaupt was fined $150, which was paid by his father, and La Prell was given a $200 fine, which he paid. Officers claim they found two gallons of liquor in a machine operated by the two boys. Judge Leonard told Warren yesterday that he invited the probation office to take a hand in affairs at the beach town at this time and said he would assist in “cleaning it up.” Newport Beach police also are said to be willing to cooperate with the probation office, Warren said. (Santa Ana Register, May 17, 1927, p. 12)

He was sentenced to pay a fine of $20 or spend on day in Jail, and chose the latter alternative, being released at 6 o'clock last night. La Prell was arrested Aug. 10 by Traffic Officer Ben Coleman for driving his automobile in the city with the muffler cut out, and was cited to appear in court Aug. 16. He failed to appear, and later was arrested on a bench warrant pleading guiltv to the traffic law violation. La Prell was fined $5, and given the additional sentence for failing to honor the court citation. (The San Bernardino Sun, Aug. 21, 1927)
6. OPERATOR OF GAS STATION IS ROBBED OF $3
Forcing M. W. “Dad” Sweetser, service station operator, of 902 Seventeenth street, to get down on his knees, a lone bandit “covered” him with a pistol early last night and robbed the station’s cash register of $3 in change, according to a report made to the city police. From a. description of the bandit he is believed to be the same man who, on Wednesday night, held up Harold LaPrell, manager of the Jumbo fee cream stand at South Main and Walnut streets and escaped with $20 in cash. Sweetser reported the bandit drove to a point opposite the service station in a Chrysler sedan, parked the car and leisurely walked across the street to the station. He entered the building, flashed a small revolver and ordered Sweetser to get down on his knees. Sweetser complied and the bandit walked over to the cash register and ransacked it. During the holdup, the bandit kept his left hand over his face as a mask, it was reported. He was reported as wearing a light suit, which corresponded with that worn by the man who robbed LaPrell. Sweetser said he weighed about 170 pounds and was about five feet, 11 inches in height. Chief of Police Claude Rogers and Officer E. E. Perry are investigating. 5. TWO TAUNTON WOMEN ARE NEARLY DROWNED
One Unconscious for Hour Before Being Revived
[Special Dispatch to The Herald]
TAUNTON, Aug. 15 -- Two local women narrowly escaped death by drowning here today while bathing in Sabbatia lake. Miss Mary King, 17, of 72 Agricultural avenue, unable to swim stepped beyond her depth and sank in eight feet of water. Mrs. Ruth G. Golliff, 33, of 75 Agricultural avenue, attempted to save her, but was overcome and went down herself. Miss King's body was brought ashore by Frank Eccles, 19, of 229 Stadding street, who dived in fully clothed. She was apparently dead. Mrs. Golliff was saved by other bathers and was easily revived, but police, under Chief John P. Duffy, applied the Schaeffner method to resuscitation of Miss King for nearly an hour before she was brought back to life. (Boston Herald, Aug. 16, 1926, p. 13)6. Two Rescued Near Taunton
TAUNTON, Aug. 16. -- Efficient work of resuscitation saved one person from death by drowning yesterday afternoon, following a double recue at Sabbatia Lake near here. Miss Mary King, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas King of 72 Agricultural avenue, was saved after patrolman Joseph Jacinto worked 45 minutes in an effort to restore breathing. Mrs. Ruth G. Goliff, 33, wife of William Goliff, 75 Agricultural avenue,, was the other person recued. Miss King and Mrs. Golliff were bathing in the lake when Miss King got beyond her depth. She could not swim so Mrs. Goliff started to her rescue. As she reached the girl, however, Miss King secured a death grip on Mrs. Goliff and the two went down struggling. Mrs. Goliff suceeding in breaking the grip and came to the surface near where she had gone down. Miss King came up several feet further out. As she threshed about wildly, two young men in a canoe succeeded in securing a grip on her hair and were attempting to pull her when she broke the grip and again went under. This time Frank Eccles, 19, of 229 Seaddings street, who was fully dressed, dove into the lake and freed Miss King, who was stuck in the muddy bottom of the lake. he swam ashore with her limp form. Others near the scene, including Mr. Goliff, had suceeded in bringing Mrs. Goliff to shore. When Chief of Police John P. Duffy and Patrolman Jacinto arrived Miss King was cold and showed no sign of life. Officer Jacinto applied the Shaffer method and, after 45 minutes, miss King began to breathe weakly.
