Notes:
1. “I don't know if you know that our nonno(Adolfo) took your gram to the New York State Fair and became sick with pneumonia there. He refused to enter the hospital there because he knew he was going to die and wanted to come home to nonni instead. They say that the fact that he worked in a foundry, which damaged his lungs and worked part time as an ice man carrying ice on his back contributed to his getting pneumonia. They waked him in their house on Beech St.” Rudolph died Sep 1940 at the age of 46 and Virginia died July 1987, age 88. (L)2. It's entirely possible they eloped. Nonno's mother, Teresa, was a tough one and didn't treat Non that well. She clearly favored her own daughter and her daughter's husband, Beuna and William Giadone. In fact, Nonno and Non lost the house on Newton St. because when Non used to give Teresa the monthly payment to put on the mortgage, she gave it to her daughter Beuna and her husband. They eventually opened Giadone's Furniture Store on Water St. in Fitchburg with a lot of Nonno's and Non's money, and Nonno and Non lost the house. Non was always bitter about that and who could blame her. (L)
3. Mom tells me that Non had between 18 and 20 pregnancies so it's entirely possible there were some miscarriages before Uncle Joe. There was also a baby girl named Josephine that died before Uncle Joe was born. (L)
Adolpho married 1 Virginia Angela Contessa daughter of Giuseppe "Joseph" Contessa and Antonia {Clara} Vangelista on 13 Oct 1916 in Bellows Falls, Rockingham, Windham Co., VT. Virginia immigrated in 1915 to to the U.S. She was employed as 1920;worked at Yarn Mill,1930;spinner cotton mill.
1. On July 8, 1915, Virginia, age 17, departed Tezze, Italy and left thru the Port of Genoa on the ship "Dante Alighieri". There were two other young girls from her home town heading to Fitchburg as well. She arrived 22 July 1915, thru Ellis Island, N.Y. She reported that she was going to her brother in law Antonio Ballerin in Fitchburg, Mass. She reported that her father in Italy was Guiseppe Contessa. 7. CONTINUANCE GRANTED TO FITCHBURG MAN
Fitchburg, March 14. -- Rinaldo Curzio of 49 Beech street pleaded guilty in District Court this morning to a charge of drunkeness. Judge Thomas F. Gallagher continued the case to Monday. Curzio was arrested last night by Patrolman Joseph P. Darcy and Reserve Officer Edward White after they had gone to 49 Beech street to investigate a disturbance. The officers found that three persons, including the defendant, sustained minor injuries during a family quarrel. Miss Virginia Baldarelli received a cut on the head, bruises on the left wrist and teeth marks on the left hand. Her husband, Rudolph, suffered cuts on the face, and Curzio, a boarder in the Baldarelli residence, was treated at police headquarters for a deep gash on the head and cuts on the face. The story told to officers by Mrs. Baldarelli was that a dispute arose when Curzio alleged that five dollars was missing from his pockets. police allege that Curzio picked up a broom and struck Mrs. Baldarelli on the head and that she then struck Curzio and in the meantime her husband came to her assistance. (Evening Gazette, March 14, 1936, p. 12)8. 1936, Dec. 5, Social Security application at Fitchburg, MA. At this time she was living at 49 Beech St., 38 yrs old, and working at Fitchburg Yarn Co.

Notes:
1. ? There are 3 Baldarelli deaths in Fitchburg, in the Massachusetts death index; [I suspect these might be her children]
Male died 1936
Female died 1938
Antonine died 19382. Virginia Contessa from outside the town of Tezze, now Tezze sul Brenta, in a town called Stroppari, departed the port of Genoa, Italy aboard the ship Dante Aligheri , 22 July 1915 at the age of 17. Manifest shows her to visit sister Elvira at 25 Rockland St. Fitchburg, MA. An entry above hers shows a Antonio Ballerino at the same address. Virginia’s sister Elvira departed the port of Le Havre on the ship La Lorraine and arrived in NY, 29 Dec 1906 at the age of 16. The manifest shows she was going to visit her Aunt Luigia Contessa in Fitchburg, MA. Virginia’s brother Giacomo departed the port of Genoa aboard the ship Barbarosa and arrived in NY 1 April 1910 at the age of 16. The manifest shows he went to visit his sister Elvira in Fitchburg, MA. Giacomo later departed the port of Le Havre, Seine Inferior, France, aboard the ship La Provence and arrived in NY 9 April 1910 at the age of 16. The manifest shows that he went to visit his sister Elvira in Fitchburg, MA. The 1910 census shows Elvira and Vittorio as borders at the home of Batista Vangelista and Contesse. In 1916 she married Adolpho Baldarelli. About the 1940’s she married John Moretto. (BKS)
3. Nonni married John Moretto thinking he could help her financially but, [he was less than the perfect husband]. About 1960 she worked as a seamstress at Clinton Manor until she retired in 1985. (L)
4. My Mom and I were remenicing about Nonni's book of dreams written in Italian. Everytime you had a dream you didn't understand you would consult Non. She in turn would consult her friend Rosie Bizzotto (also from Bassano), who would read to her from the book. She would then be able to decipher your dream and tell you a little about your future. They were quite a pair. (L)
5. In 2001 while working in Germany I was sent to Vicenza. When I was first stationed in Germany while I was in the Army, my relatives would often encourage me to visit Italy and look up our cousins, but I never did. Where would I start? Well, the time was now. It was about an eight hour drive down from where I was in Germany to the city of Vicenza. The drive was beautiful this fall day. I drove down thru the Austrian Alps, the Brenner Pass, and northern Italy with the Dolimite Mts. in sight. I got a chance to go searching my 2nd day. So, armed with a map, an English-Italian dictionary and Mr. Renzo Zanatto’s address I drove north. The town of Tezze is about 30 min. north of Vicenza. After a couple of wrong turns and a few stares from the locals, I found the address. When I knocked at the door, Mrs. Zanotto answered. She spoke no English. I asked for Renzo and she said, "no Renzo". I was disappointed and ran back to the car to get my book. I tried to explain to her to no avail. Rather than continue to be embarrassed(I think) she let me in her home. Luckily about 10 minutes later, her daughter, Sylvia came home. Sylvia spoke some broken English and I continued explaining who I was. Then 30 min later Renzo came home. Renzo was great and I felt comfortable right away. Renzo has a beautiful home and is rightly proud of it. He showed me the yard and his favorite place, the den with fireplace above the garage. We talked via Sylvia (as translater) for a couple of hours. I showed him some pictures, and he quickly recognized my great Aunt Bruna. I also showed him the family history chart. When I asked about the cemetery, Sylvia seemed hesitant, but I urged her to ask her father. Renzo immediately jumped up and got a flashlight and we went looking for grave stones. The cemetery was beautiful and I should have expected that Italy does the same thing as Germany, that is, they contract grave plots. So, many of the names I had hoped to see where no longer maintained. Later, Renzo guided me in the right direction back towards Vicenza. I had a great visit. (BKS)
6. As far as stories go, Nonni was great at telling them. The problem is no one ever knew when she was serious. She used to kid alot about Gypsy heritage with me, but I wonder if she was kidding. I've looked into it a bit and a very sizeable number of Gypsies migrated to the Baltics. Those in Montenegro eventually lost their language and culture and assimilated into the population, however, a great many migrated to northern Italy. We've often laughed about this, but given her singing and guitar playing who knows? If you have ever listened to a recording of the Gypsy Kings you would swear you're listening to her. ... some of the spices Nonni used in her cooking are similar to those used in Indian cooking and as I'm sure you're aware, the Gypsies or (Zingari in Italian) originated in India. Something interesting to ponder anyway. That gorgeous skin of hers had to come from someplace. (L)

13. Woman Crash Victim (with photo)
A Fitchburg woman died Wednesday afternoon one hour after she drove head-on into a tree on Route 2A. Police do not know what caused the accident. Pronounced dead at 5 p.m. at Burbank Hospital was Rose A. Baldarelli, 58, 30 DeLisle St. Drs. John Pellegrini and Chase Peterson told police she died from multiple fractures of her ribs and a collapsed lung. All on her right side. Mrs. Baldarelli also sustained multiple fractures of both legs. According to police reports, Peterson said the extent of the injuries prevented him from determining whether or not Mrs. Baldarelli suffered a heart attack immediately before the accident. The fatal accident, Fitchburg's fourth this year, occurred at 4 p.m. opposite Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School 200 feet east of the Fitchburg-Westminster boundary. Mrs. Baldarelli was traveling easterly towards Fitchburg when her car apparently left the road and drove head-on into a three-foot diameter tree 12 feet from the highway. Police and Registry of Motor Vehicle inspectors reported no skid marks in the vicinity of the accident and are at this time unable to determine if the car went out of control. There were apparently no witnesses, but Andrew Hamonds, Brooks Village Road, Templeton, was the first to come upon the scene a few minutes after 4 p.m. He told police Mrs. Baldarelli was calling for help when he arrived. Rescue 1 from the Fire Department was dispatched at 4:07 and the crew removed Mrs. Baldarelli who was pinned under the dashboard of the 1971 Toyota sedan. She was then taken to Burbank Hospital where she died a short time later.
Police notified her next of kin, James Baldarelli, 45, 26 DeLisle St., shortly thereafter. Mrs. Baldarelli was born in Fitchburg, Sept. 18, 1905, a daughter of the late George and Matilda Rousseau and was the widow of James Baldarelli, Sr. She is survived by four sons, James F. Baldarelli, George, Albert and Robert Baldarelli, all of Fitchburg; a daughter, Alice, wife of Dr. Joseph B. Addante of Fitchburg: a brother, Albert Rousseau of Fitchburg; a stepbrother, Edward Bernard of Leominster; four stepsisters, the misses Bernadelle and Yvonne Bernard, Bertha, wife of Sylvio Chimard and Cecile, wife of Alex German, all of Fitchburg; 14 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday from the Joseph A. Isabelle and Son Funeral Home with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. (The Daily Sentinel and Enterprise, July. 18, 1974, p. 1)14. Fatal Crash Probe Ends
Registry of Motor Vehicle Inspector Martin Anderson has concluded his investigation into a July 17 car accident on Route 2A, which killed Rose A. Baldarelli, 58, 30 DeLisle St., saying no cause was found. Mrs. Baldarelli apparently drove into a tree across from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School and died within an hour of the late afternoon accident due to multiple fractures of her ribs and a collapsed lung. Fitchburg police on July 18 reported no skid marks at the scene of the accident and Anderson this week said there was no evidence of a hit and run incident. The registry official is still inspecting two recent Fitchburg car accidents which {},15, of Lunenburg, and Paul F. Christian, 23, of Leominster. Anderson said he expects to conclude the investigation by the middle of next week. (The Daily Sentinel and Enterprise, Aug. 30, 1974, p. 1)

6. 1974: An Expert At Furniture -
Bill Giadone - A Self-Made Man
There is a furniture man here who's gad he got out of the oil business in view of the recent fuel shortage. William B. Giadone was once an oilman but that was before World War II and things
became scarce. He also sold ice but the modern refrigerator cooled that business. The Best
Presently, he sells furniture on Water Street and his been doing so since 1941. He considers himself the best in the business. Giadone has lived In the Fitchburg area since he was three years old. His parents emigrated here from Italy with himself and his sister, Mary.
Once here, three other sons, Sarn, James and Joseph, were born and all but one live in the area. Sam works with William (he wants to he called Bill) at the Water Street stores. Bill is married to Beuna Baldarelli,a Fitchburg resident. Here is an example of a man who’s never dependent on anyone for anything. He had to leave the Bartley Nolan School on Salem Street at an early age
to go to work during the depression years. First, he tried his hand at baking at Padula's and then he worked in hotels in New York City for seven years. Bill returned to Fitchburg and the times got better for him, for Fitchburg and for the world. Since setting up shop on Water Street, the business has continued to grow. Now, he has two main showrooms displaying furniture and carpets. He learned the business the hard way. He attends symposiums on the retail business every year in Chicago, sponsored by the Retail Merchants Guild for 27 stores in the U.S. He has completed courses in a d v e r t i s e m e n t and merchandising at Northwestern University in Illinois. He also attends numerous seminars sponsored by the National Home Furnishing Association, which helps to update his abilities to better serve his customers. He has been president of the Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the City Republican Committee and, in
that capacity, co-ordinated the gubernatorial campaign of the now Ambassador to Italy, John A. Volpe in 1964. He was president of Fitchburg GeneralHospital for a number of years and received an achievement award for outstanding service in the community from the Order of the Sons of Italy in America.
Giadone is proud of the fact that he brings, over 30 years of experience to the furniturebusiness. "This is a business." he says, "you can lose your shirt in if you don't know what you're doing."
For example, take his recent tour of North Carolina furniture factories. He went down there
for eight days to see the latest styles, and to make deals for bulk orders. That's another advantage, he said, of being an old hand at the business. If you are going to keep down your overhead costs and sell at big values, he said, you have to buy in large quantities. "These fellows get to know you and they won't try anything funny...if I get an order that isn’t what was promised, I send it right back to the factory and then drop the factory.”Market
At one time, he explained, Chicago was the center of the purchasing market for furniture dealers. For the past 10 years, North Carolina has been both a national and international market for the factories and the showrooms. Places such as High Point Hickory, Lenor and Thomasville are well known names to furniture dealers around the world. “These plants are enormous… the selections are of a larger variety and finer quality.” He said. Bill changed a few brands and added other nationally known names this year and he expects shipments within the next month. This is how he rates the top furniture companies, first in bedroom sets - White of Mebane, second, Thomasville (a town grew up around this company), Broyhill and Bassett are middle-of-the-roaders but are known for basically good quality. The two B’s average about $100 million a year in sales, although Bassett, which started in an old barn, is bigger.
Largest
The largest manufacturer of living room sets, he says, is Kroehler and Lazy-Boy makes over $70 million a year just on chairs. Some other quality brand names which he plans to try this year are Silver coffee tables, Allan White living room sets, American Martinsville and Claremont living room sets. Of course, no furniture store is complete without good quality mattresses and box springs. Giadone’s carries only the best in Simmons and Sealy Posturpedic. Despite inflation and the energy crunch, the home furnishing industry is predicting a 40 percent increase in sales this year, he said. Bill plans to maintain his costs at reasonable levels. He provides each customer with a $1,000 guaranteed savings bond. In other words, under his signature, he states that every item of merchandise sold by our store cannot be purchased elsewhere under the same conditions of delivery and service for less, and if the purchaser can show this merchandise was available elsewhere for less within 10 days of purchase we will refund the difference between our selling price and the price for which purchaser could have bought it, plus 10 percent of that difference.
Shoppers are advised if they’re in the market for home furnishings this year, to shop before July 1st. the Cost of Living Council has freed price restrictions on furniture manufacturers as of that date and retailers expect manufacturers to raise prices on all orders placed for shipments after July 1. Giadone says that he will do everything he can to keep prices reasonable. (The Daily Sentinel and Enterprise, Tue. June 18, 1974, p. 23A)7.
