4544. James Converse was born about 1620 in England. He died on 10 May 1715 in Woburn, Middlesex Co., MA. He married Anna Long on 24 Oct 1643 in Woburn, Middlesex Co., MA. [Parents]

1. Lieutenant JAMES CONVERS, born in England in 1620; came to this country with his father in 1630, sat down first at Charlestown, and thence removed to Woburn, Mass., in 1641, where he died 10 May 1715, aged 95, surviving his son Major James Convers.3 He was Sergeant 1658 to 1672, Ensign 1672 to 1688, and Lieutenant 1688 to 1715. As Lieutenant he served with the Woburn company in garrison there during King Philip's War. He was one of the Selectmen of Woburn, a Commissioner of the Rate, and one of the leading members of the Woburn Church. He was Deputy to the General Court, 1679, 83, 84, 85, 86 and 89. Sewall's History of Woburn says of him-" Through a long life he was a very valuable and highly esteemed citizen; was repeatedly honored by the town with the principal offices it had to confer, and . . . in his will, dated Aug. 28, 1712, he bequeathed as follows:-
To my Reverend Pastor, Mr. John Fox, twenty shillings; and to the church of Christ in Woburn twenty shillings to purchase a large flagon withall.' The last twenty years of his life were spent in retirement. But he was not one who under any circumstance; could live without care or concern for the good of others. As indicative of this, the following anecdote respecting him seems worth preserving. As Hon. Judge Sewall was once journeying homeward from Newbury to Boston he took the road through Andover and Woburn, then adjoining towns. His passage through Wooburn he notices in his diary thus:" 1702, August 12.- Right [Wright] conducts me to Wooburn through the Land of Nod [in which he was largely interested]. This is ye first time I have seen it. Got late to Fowl's at Wooburn. Sick there, which made me uneasy. Aug. 13. Visit Mr. Fox. View ye Hop-Yards. Come home. Very hot. Met Mr. Converse, the Father, and discours'd him under a Shady Tree. Won't give his Grandchildren till after his death, for fear of giving offence. Expressed his Grief that Gov Dudley put men in place that were not good."
He married, 24 October 1643, Anna Long, daughter of Robert Long of Charlestown, by whom he had ten children. She died 10 August 1691. He married, second, Anna, widow of Dea. John Cooper of Cambridge. She is mentioned in Major Convers' will, together with her children Samuel Cooper and Anna Cooper. Anna Cooper was the daughter of Nathaniel Sparhawke.

1. Came to New England in the ship "Planter" in 1635, his age being then stated as 21 years. On 24 June 1662, he made a deposition giving his age as 50 years. His land is mentioned in 1636 as bounding that of Samuel Hall at Ipswich. He was made freeman 18 May 1642 in company with Hampton men. In 1645 he shared the common lands of Hampton and was on the committee for finishing the meeting house. After 1649, Francis Peabody married (2) Mary Foster, daughter of Reginald Foster and widow of Daniel Wood. Daniel Wood died about 1648, the date of his inventory. (Essex Antiquarian: 10:48).
The will of Reginald Foster, dated at Ipswich 30 April 1680, mentions "my daughter Mary, wife of ffrancis Paybody." Francis Peabody, in his will, dated 20 January 1695-6, proved 7 August 1698, mentions "my son in law Daniell Wood." (The ancestry of Franklin Merriam Peabody, Merriam, 1929).

2. Removed to Topsfield, MA.

Notes:
1. Leiutenant Francis Peabody Of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, Who was born in 1614, came to New England in the ship "Planter" in 1635. He was about 21 years of age. He is stated to have first settled in Ipswitch MA, which then included, indefinitely, the territory outside of the present limits of that town. He was one of the first settlers in Hampton, NH.,going there with Rev. Stephen Batchelder (father of Deborah Wing who married John Wing of Sandwich and the ancestor of the perkins family through Henrietta Child who married Ira Perkins, father of Edwin E. Perkins), in 1637. He was made a Freedman in 1640. His name is found in the Grand Jury, and on trial juries in Hampton. As that place prior to 1657 was decided to be within the limits of NH, He sold his estate in Hampton in 1650 and bought land in what is now Topsfield MA, on the southern border, where he spent the rest of his life. He was a large landholder and was prominent for his enterprise and wealth. He died on Feb. 19, 1697-8. He married Mary Foster and had 14 children. Mary Foster came from England (Wales?). She was descended from Alfred the Great from Scottish kings and was related to every king and queen at that time. No records of birth and death.{Signed his will "paybody"} His first wife was named Lydia

4567. Mary Foster was born in 1618 in Exeter, England. She died on 9 Apr 1705 in Topsfield, Essex Co., MA. Mary was buried in Southside Cemetery, Topsfield, Essex Co., MA. [Parents]

Notes:
1. Mary Foster came from England to America in 1638 when she was about 20 yrs. old with her parnets, REGINALD & JUDITH FOSTER, five brothers and a sister. The family settled in Ipswich in Mass. Bay Colony. According to "Foster Genealogy: being the record of the posterity of Reginald Foster, an early inhabitant of Ipswich in New England....", by Frederick Clifton Pierce, p. 131, Mary Foster married first Daniel Wood and second Francis Peabody. [Daniel Wood's estate was settled in 1648 and Mary Wood was the executrix of his estate & was to bring up the children]. If this is the same Mary, she had children from her first marriage. Yet, according to the same book, Francis & Mary Foster had fourteen children beginning with John who was born in 1642 ending with Nathaniel who was born in 1669. If this is true, she would have married Francis Peabody prior to 1642 and could not have married Daniel Wood.

5058. John Frye.John married [---] [---].

Foot-note to page 13:
"John Frye was from Basing, Hants Co., Eng. He arrived in the Harbor
of Boston in Aug., 1638, bringing with him his wife and 3 children, viz.:
(1) John (Dea. John of Andover), b. 1633; (II) Benjamin, b. 1635; (III) Elizabeth,
b. 1637 (m. Robert Stile.s). He was one of the original purchasers of
the Cochichewick tract; rem. from Newbury to Andover previous to 1641.
At Andover were born 3 children, viz. : (IV) Sarah, b. 1643; d. Mch. 5, 1661-3;
(V) Samuel, b. 1644; (VI) James, b. 1653." The above account is from a letter
of Theophilus D. Frye of Montclair, N.J. .Genealogist of the Frye Family.
Mr. F. states that there is now in the possession of a family in Michigan
an ancient " Sampler," which was wrought by a Miss Ann Frye, in 1785,
and was a copy of an older one which, family tradition says, was the work
of Elizabeth, depicting the Frye arms. Among the posterity of the emigrants
John and Anna Frye, these have been, from the first, persons of
note. This is shown by the following epitome from Miss Bailey's " Historical
Sketches of Andover, Mass. : " " Mr. Fry was one of the first settlers
in this towne, and his offspring men of grate note; there was Copprils,
Sergeants, Clarks, Ensigns, Lieuts Twelve Captains, Magrs, Cornels, and
Major Generals, Two Judges of the Corts Superer and Court of Common
Pleas, and two that held the titel of the Honorable Couucellors, and
severall j ustices of the Peace, and some of the Rest excellen Good citizens."
[U. S. Senator Frye, of Maine, is a descendent of John' Frye in the line
of his son Samuel.]
