Notes:
1. G-grandfather; Jude Converse:
The settlers soon sought help from the government to aid them in holding their clearings and improvements. In the end it was settled that the homesteaders release 1,000 of their 1,200 acres to the Agent, keeping the 200 on which were their buildings and improvements for themselves. The following is one of the partitions which was sent jointly by Stanstead and Barnston Townships:
"The Honorable Thomas Dunn, Esq.
Administrator of the Province of Quebec"
"The petition of Benjamin Haines and Simon Haines, of the Township of Stanstead, and Lemuel Rops, Jude Converse, Joshua Parker and Samuel Dunbar, of the Township of Barnston, in the Province of Lower Canada."
"Humbly and respectfully showeth, that your honorable petitioners have been settlers for some time past, on the several lots of land hereinafter annexed to their names respectively, and have made improvements thereon by clearing and cultivating the land, and erecting buildings on the same. Your petitioners further beg to observe that said improvements constitute nearly the whole of their property, to be compelled, therefore, to abandon them, would bring ruin on themselves and their families."
"Your Petitioners, therefore, humbly pray that your Honor and Council will be favorably pleased to consider their situation, and put an order allowing them the exclusive privilege of purchasing said lots of land at the same price which other ungranted lands, in the same Township, may hereafter sell for at public sale."
"And in duty bound will ever pray."
"Dated this 1st day of November 1805."
"Stanstead: Benjamin Haines, Lot 20, 13th Range; Simon Haines, Lot 21, 13 Range."
"Barnston: Lemuel Rops, Lot 18, 3rd Range; Jude Converse, Lot 22, 3rd Range; Joshua Parker, Lot 17, 3rd Range; Samuel Dunbar, Lot 17, 5th Range."

25. Obit:
It was with a feeling of profound regret that the community learned of the death of Chester A. Morrison which occurred at his home at Mid-night Wednesday Sept. 10th. Say a Manitou Springs Journal, Colorado. For the past three years Mr. Morrison has been an invalid struggling with a quiet patience peculiarly his own, an incurable disease. Last winter he spent the winter in California accompanied by his wife, hoping for benefit from the climate change, but his improvement was but temporary. He has failed steadily all summer and while his friends had given up hope of his recovery, the end came as a shock.
Mr. Morrison was born in Canada fifty-five years ago next December, and has lived in Manitou for the past sixteen years. Quiet and unobstructive as to disposition he soon won and has retained the respect and regards of the community. He served two terms as town councilman and has repeatedly refused re-nomination, and the people recognized in him one who could be depended on to take an honorable stand on all questions.
A wife and married daughter, who live in Canada, are all the surviving family. The Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Herbert W. Lathe, the burial at Crystal Valley being in charge of the odd fellows. (Stanstead Journal, September 25, 1902)

1. SUPERIOR COURT
The case of Lizzie Hart vs. Charles E. Hart, administrator of the estate of Thomas D. Hart, was tried before Judge Quinn and decision reserved. The action is one of equity to recover two policies of $250 each carried by Hart in the John Hancock. Insurance Co. and claimed by a third party. The company stands ready to pay, the money to whom the court says is entitled to it. Lizzie Hart was the wife of Thomas D. Hart and asserts that she kept up the payments, to the extent of $695. Her testimony was corroborated by agents of the company, one of whom swore that Hart told him that his wife took out the policies and that he must look to her for the assessments which he did and by whom he was paid. The administrator admitted that the plaintiff paid the asessments to the agents, but asserted that for six or seven years she simply acted as transfer agent from the husband to the company. Judge Franklin Freeman for plaintiff. Atty John E. Sullivan, of Worcester for defendant; Atty C. E. McGilladdy for the company. (Leominster Daily Enterprise, Nov. 28, 1911, p. 4)

4. Leominster: A LIQUOR CASE
Saturday was a "field day" in the court calendar, Mrs. "Maggie" Reed having brought a complaint against Mrs. Margaret Hart for the illegal sale of cider. There has not been the best of feeling between the two parties of late. The case has created a great deal of excitement and at the hour of trialJustice Merriam's office was crowded. John R. Thayer of Worcester appeared for Mrs. Hart, and John W. Walsh of Fitchburg for Mrs. Reed, who was the principal witness for the government. She testified to having bought cider of Mrs. Hart; was washing for her on a certain Monday; bought a glass of cider and paid her five cents, drank both glasses in her house, also bought cider there for pies. Mr. Thayer gave the witness a severe cross-examination, but she still swore to buying the cider. Other witnesses were examined for the government, but no direct testimony for conviction was gained. Mr. Hart, husband of the defendant, testified: Got the apples of Mr. Willard on halves; made cider myself; think I had two or three barrels; it was more than I wanted, so the "brick-yard hands" came up and I sold it out to them by the gallon; never sold cider to man, woman or child, to be drank on the premises. Miss Matilda Hart, daughter of the defendant, testified: [Matilda is about 19 yrs old, bks] Live near Mrs. Reed; our yards join. (Mrs. Reed made her complaint two weeks ago and the case was continued until today). Mrs. Reed called me over to her house and said: "Hope you have no hard feeling against me; I want to get out of this; will give you $5 to say I got the cider in your house, and it won't cost you anything." I told her that would be wrong and I would not do it. I won't take a false oath; she told me she had often done that and no harm came of it; saw her again, last Friday, in her yard, between 10 and 11 o'clock; she wanted me to see my father and have him settle it up; said we can go down and see Esquire Merriam and stop the case, and she would do it if he would give her $8; then they could telegraph to the lawyers not to come; was at home when Mrs. Reed washed, but saw no cider furnished her.
Cross-examined: My mother never had trouble with Mrs. Reed, only when she came over there to fight with her. Mrs. Reed was not sober yesterday. Nellie Keefe testified: Have lived with Mrs. Hart two years; last night, after coming home, had a talk with Mrs. Reed; she wished me to speak with Mrs. Hart about settling the case; she told me she got no cider there and hated to go into court and say so; wanted to borrow money to pay her counsel; never saw any one drink cider there. Edward Obeshaw testified that he went to Hart's for a gallon of cider; went once for less but was refused. Cross-examined: Couldn't tell whether it was in spring or summer when I bought it; there was no snow on the ground.
Margaret Obey testified: Mrs. Reed told me she had never got cider there. Emily Dillel testified: Live in house with Mrs. Reed; she asked me to see Mr. Hart and get him to settle; she told me she had never got cider there; she had just made a complaint against Mrs. Reed for drunkeness. Joseph Dillel testified: Heard Mrs. Reed say she had never bought cider of Mrs. Hart. Mrs. Hart, the defendant, testified that her husband had told her not to sell less than a gallon; never sold any to be drank on the premises; I had a talk yesterday in the yard with Mrs. Reed; she told me it was a shame to go to trial, said she had never bought cider of me and she could not stand up in court and say so; she told me if my husband would give her $6 or $7 she would go down to Merriam and settle up. At 7 o'clock she came and asked me if I had done anything about it; told her no; I never sold her cider; paid her $1 for washing; she gave me 20 cents back in change; when I told her I had engaged a lawyer and would not stop it, she said, "my God, what shall I do?" Mrs. Reed said: "I have no hard feelings against you; I want to kiss you." I told her she shouldn't do it.
Mrs. Reed was re-called and swore positively she bought the cider there and had not spoken one word to the witnesses for several days. They have all sworn falsely. Mr. Thayer on cross-examination was very earnest. "Do you say Mrs. Hart is a liar?" "Yes, and Miss Hart and Miss Keefe." Then Mr. Thayer pointed out all the witnesses separately, and asked the same question. Mrs. Reed responded, "Yes, they are all liars."
The case was well argued on both sides. the justice, after summing up the case, ordered the defendant discharged. (The Fitchburg Sentinel, Sept. 11, 1882, p. 3)5. All Mayville was shocked and saddened last Friday when it became known that Fred J. Lang had been found dead at the Republican House, Milwaukee, Friday morning, shortly before dinner. Mr. Lang had gone to Rochester, Minn.,to consult specialists as to his spinal trouble, from which he had suffered for years. It was upon his return from there that death claimed him so suddenly. His relatives were notified and the remains were brought to Mayville on Saturday evening.
Fred J. Lang was born at Sheboygan, Nov. 15, 1862. Three years later his parents returned to Germany with him and he grew up in Saarbruecken. There he acquired his education and his great love for music, literature, art and nature. Upon returning to Wisconsin he was for years in the lumber business at Fond du Lac, and later in Michigan.
He was married Oct. 10, 1901 to Miss Antoinette Ruedebusch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Ruedebusch of this city, and here he lived these 19 years and gained the friendship and esteem of everyone.
He leaves his sorrowing widow and little son, Carl, also a sister, Miss Louise Lang of Milwaukee and two brothers, Max at Fond du Lac and Carl of Tower, Minn.
Besides these the following relatives came to the funeral: Messrs. and Mmes. John Goetz, F. J. Rueping, Arthur and Ed. Kramer, Miss Mary Femlon, B. Husting, all of Fond du Lac, A. Langenbach of West Bend, Carl and Alfred Langenbach of LaCrosse, Richard Schneider and family of Milwaukee, Mrs. M. Weber and daughter Miss Alexa of Theresa.
The funeral of F. J. Lang took place on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence on Horicon Street to Graceland cemetery. The funeral was held in private, none being present except relatives and members of the Turn-Verein of which he was an active member, and many of whom are near relatives of the family.
The ceremonies were simple, brief, and impressive. At the residence, a select chorus of the Maennerchor, under the direction of Professor Kramer, sang "Die Thraene." After the singing, a brief eulogy upon the life and services of the deceased was delivered by L. S. Keeley. He dwelt upon the pain and suffering that Mr. Lang had patiently and secretly endured for some years under the ever increasing intensity of an incurable nervous disease. The speaker described him in his years of health and strength as a man of far more than ordinary mental capacity. He had won the confidence of his employers and the reliance of business men everywhere in Wisconsin and in the states adjoining. He was thrifty and had accumulated sufficient of material wealth for the support of himself and family. Among men, he was the delight of a social gathering, a genial associate, an ideal husband, and his home life was a model of virtue. Mr. Keeley expressed deep sympathy for the family, especially the devoted wife. At the close he asked those present to not let the occasion pass without a resolve for the more faithful and affectionate discharge of their duties to the living.
At the grave in Graceland, the choir sang: "Unter allen Wipfeln ist Ruh."
Mr. Loewenfeld paid a tribute to the memory of the deceased in the German language. He spoke of him as a true American who in the full discharge of his duties to his country preserved also a deep attachment for the land of his ancestors. He loved her language and her people. He loved music and song and was a member of the "Maennerchor." He was a believer of the principles and purposes of the Turn-Verein, and was one of its members. He loved his home, his wife and his child. He was a lover of nature, of poetry and of art. He was a man of many friends and had not an enemy in all the world.
At the conclusion of Mr. Loewenfeld's address the choir rendered with a beautiful and touching effect, "Ritter's Abschied." The casket was then consigned to its last resting place, and all was over. Relatives and close friends of the family from Fond du Lac and Ripon were in attendance, and many were the expressions of kindness, regret, and of sympathy.
The floral offerings were very numerous and beautiful.
May he rest in peace!
