DAVIDSON - MORRISON - At Barnston, Que., by Rev. W. Williams, Oct. 19th, A. Lee Davidson to Miss Emma Morrison. (THe Herald, Oct. 29, 1899, p. 2)6. Sarah's first marriage to Albert Lee Davidson ended about 1905-1907. It seems that Albert wanted to move west to Alberta and presumably she did not want to follow. In 1905 he went west and worked as a cowboy on the Carby & Knight ranch. In Nov. of 1905 he filed for a homestead on the SW 32-39-12. Then he went back to Quebec for the winter and brought out a railcar of supplies. He put lumber in the bottom of the car, loaded equipment and horses and cattle. He had to freight his supplies from Stettler and ford the Battle River. His father Joe Davidson and his brother Ralph followed in 1907 and filed on the south quarters of 6-40-12 bringing more supplies. They were able to come to Sedgewick but waited three days in Daysland for the rail to be finished. In Sedgewick they had to unload their car. Ed Davidson, who worked for the railway and later worked in Alliance, told them just to pile their belongings on the ground and they would be perfectly safe. They were and it took several trips with teams of horses to get it all moved to the homestead. Joe Davidson stayed long enough to prove up on his homestead and then gave the quarter to his sons and returned to Quebec. (Joyce)

Notes:
1. “I don't know if you know that our nonno(Adolfo) took your gram to the New York State Fair and became sick with pneumonia there. He refused to enter the hospital there because he knew he was going to die and wanted to come home to nonni instead. They say that the fact that he worked in a foundry, which damaged his lungs and worked part time as an ice man carrying ice on his back contributed to his getting pneumonia. They waked him in their house on Beech St.” Rudolph died Sep 1940 at the age of 46 and Virginia died July 1987, age 88. (L)2. It's entirely possible they eloped. Nonno's mother, Teresa, was a tough one and didn't treat Non that well. She clearly favored her own daughter and her daughter's husband, Beuna and William Giadone. In fact, Nonno and Non lost the house on Newton St. because when Non used to give Teresa the monthly payment to put on the mortgage, she gave it to her daughter Beuna and her husband. They eventually opened Giadone's Furniture Store on Water St. in Fitchburg with a lot of Nonno's and Non's money, and Nonno and Non lost the house. Non was always bitter about that and who could blame her. (L)
3. Mom tells me that Non had between 18 and 20 pregnancies so it's entirely possible there were some miscarriages before Uncle Joe. There was also a baby girl named Josephine that died before Uncle Joe was born. (L)

7. CONTINUANCE GRANTED TO FITCHBURG MAN
Fitchburg, March 14. -- Rinaldo Curzio of 49 Beech street pleaded guilty in District Court this morning to a charge of drunkeness. Judge Thomas F. Gallagher continued the case to Monday. Curzio was arrested last night by Patrolman Joseph P. Darcy and Reserve Officer Edward White after they had gone to 49 Beech street to investigate a disturbance. The officers found that three persons, including the defendant, sustained minor injuries during a family quarrel. Miss Virginia Baldarelli received a cut on the head, bruises on the left wrist and teeth marks on the left hand. Her husband, Rudolph, suffered cuts on the face, and Curzio, a boarder in the Baldarelli residence, was treated at police headquarters for a deep gash on the head and cuts on the face. The story told to officers by Mrs. Baldarelli was that a dispute arose when Curzio alleged that five dollars was missing from his pockets. police allege that Curzio picked up a broom and struck Mrs. Baldarelli on the head and that she then struck Curzio and in the meantime her husband came to her assistance. (Evening Gazette, March 14, 1936, p. 12)8. 1936, Dec. 5, Social Security application at Fitchburg, MA. At this time she was living at 49 Beech St., 38 yrs old, and working at Fitchburg Yarn Co.

Notes:
1. ? There are 3 Baldarelli deaths in Fitchburg, in the Massachusetts death index; [I suspect these might be her children]
Male died 1936
Female died 1938
Antonine died 19382. Virginia Contessa from outside the town of Tezze, now Tezze sul Brenta, in a town called Stroppari, departed the port of Genoa, Italy aboard the ship Dante Aligheri , 22 July 1915 at the age of 17. Manifest shows her to visit sister Elvira at 25 Rockland St. Fitchburg, MA. An entry above hers shows a Antonio Ballerino at the same address. Virginia’s sister Elvira departed the port of Le Havre on the ship La Lorraine and arrived in NY, 29 Dec 1906 at the age of 16. The manifest shows she was going to visit her Aunt Luigia Contessa in Fitchburg, MA. Virginia’s brother Giacomo departed the port of Genoa aboard the ship Barbarosa and arrived in NY 1 April 1910 at the age of 16. The manifest shows he went to visit his sister Elvira in Fitchburg, MA. Giacomo later departed the port of Le Havre, Seine Inferior, France, aboard the ship La Provence and arrived in NY 9 April 1910 at the age of 16. The manifest shows that he went to visit his sister Elvira in Fitchburg, MA. The 1910 census shows Elvira and Vittorio as borders at the home of Batista Vangelista and Contesse. In 1916 she married Adolpho Baldarelli. About the 1940’s she married John Moretto. (BKS)
3. Nonni married John Moretto thinking he could help her financially but, [he was less than the perfect husband]. About 1960 she worked as a seamstress at Clinton Manor until she retired in 1985. (L)
4. My Mom and I were remenicing about Nonni's book of dreams written in Italian. Everytime you had a dream you didn't understand you would consult Non. She in turn would consult her friend Rosie Bizzotto (also from Bassano), who would read to her from the book. She would then be able to decipher your dream and tell you a little about your future. They were quite a pair. (L)
5. In 2001 while working in Germany I was sent to Vicenza. When I was first stationed in Germany while I was in the Army, my relatives would often encourage me to visit Italy and look up our cousins, but I never did. Where would I start? Well, the time was now. It was about an eight hour drive down from where I was in Germany to the city of Vicenza. The drive was beautiful this fall day. I drove down thru the Austrian Alps, the Brenner Pass, and northern Italy with the Dolimite Mts. in sight. I got a chance to go searching my 2nd day. So, armed with a map, an English-Italian dictionary and Mr. Renzo Zanatto’s address I drove north. The town of Tezze is about 30 min. north of Vicenza. After a couple of wrong turns and a few stares from the locals, I found the address. When I knocked at the door, Mrs. Zanotto answered. She spoke no English. I asked for Renzo and she said, "no Renzo". I was disappointed and ran back to the car to get my book. I tried to explain to her to no avail. Rather than continue to be embarrassed(I think) she let me in her home. Luckily about 10 minutes later, her daughter, Sylvia came home. Sylvia spoke some broken English and I continued explaining who I was. Then 30 min later Renzo came home. Renzo was great and I felt comfortable right away. Renzo has a beautiful home and is rightly proud of it. He showed me the yard and his favorite place, the den with fireplace above the garage. We talked via Sylvia (as translater) for a couple of hours. I showed him some pictures, and he quickly recognized my great Aunt Bruna. I also showed him the family history chart. When I asked about the cemetery, Sylvia seemed hesitant, but I urged her to ask her father. Renzo immediately jumped up and got a flashlight and we went looking for grave stones. The cemetery was beautiful and I should have expected that Italy does the same thing as Germany, that is, they contract grave plots. So, many of the names I had hoped to see where no longer maintained. Later, Renzo guided me in the right direction back towards Vicenza. I had a great visit. (BKS)
6. As far as stories go, Nonni was great at telling them. The problem is no one ever knew when she was serious. She used to kid alot about Gypsy heritage with me, but I wonder if she was kidding. I've looked into it a bit and a very sizeable number of Gypsies migrated to the Baltics. Those in Montenegro eventually lost their language and culture and assimilated into the population, however, a great many migrated to northern Italy. We've often laughed about this, but given her singing and guitar playing who knows? If you have ever listened to a recording of the Gypsy Kings you would swear you're listening to her. ... some of the spices Nonni used in her cooking are similar to those used in Indian cooking and as I'm sure you're aware, the Gypsies or (Zingari in Italian) originated in India. Something interesting to ponder anyway. That gorgeous skin of hers had to come from someplace. (L)

5. TWO TAUNTON WOMEN ARE NEARLY DROWNED
One Unconscious for Hour Before Being Revived
[Special Dispatch to The Herald]
TAUNTON, Aug. 15 -- Two local women narrowly escaped death by drowning here today while bathing in Sabbatia lake. Miss Mary King, 17, of 72 Agricultural avenue, unable to swim stepped beyond her depth and sank in eight feet of water. Mrs. Ruth G. Golliff, 33, of 75 Agricultural avenue, attempted to save her, but was overcome and went down herself. Miss King's body was brought ashore by Frank Eccles, 19, of 229 Stadding street, who dived in fully clothed. She was apparently dead. Mrs. Golliff was saved by other bathers and was easily revived, but police, under Chief John P. Duffy, applied the Schaeffner method to resuscitation of Miss King for nearly an hour before she was brought back to life. (Boston Herald, Aug. 16, 1926, p. 13)6. Two Rescued Near Taunton
TAUNTON, Aug. 16. -- Efficient work of resuscitation saved one person from death by drowning yesterday afternoon, following a double recue at Sabbatia Lake near here. Miss Mary King, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas King of 72 Agricultural avenue, was saved after patrolman Joseph Jacinto worked 45 minutes in an effort to restore breathing. Mrs. Ruth G. Goliff, 33, wife of William Goliff, 75 Agricultural avenue,, was the other person recued. Miss King and Mrs. Golliff were bathing in the lake when Miss King got beyond her depth. She could not swim so Mrs. Goliff started to her rescue. As she reached the girl, however, Miss King secured a death grip on Mrs. Goliff and the two went down struggling. Mrs. Goliff suceeding in breaking the grip and came to the surface near where she had gone down. Miss King came up several feet further out. As she threshed about wildly, two young men in a canoe succeeded in securing a grip on her hair and were attempting to pull her when she broke the grip and again went under. This time Frank Eccles, 19, of 229 Seaddings street, who was fully dressed, dove into the lake and freed Miss King, who was stuck in the muddy bottom of the lake. he swam ashore with her limp form. Others near the scene, including Mr. Goliff, had suceeded in bringing Mrs. Goliff to shore. When Chief of Police John P. Duffy and Patrolman Jacinto arrived Miss King was cold and showed no sign of life. Officer Jacinto applied the Shaffer method and, after 45 minutes, miss King began to breathe weakly.
