1. He enlisted and probably volunteered, as many men of the time did, at the age of 27, on 5 Sept. 1861 and served with C Co. 1st Cav Reg, MA. His description from his pension records; he was 5’ 10” dark complexion, dark hair, black eyes. He was at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland, in Sept of 1862, and it was after this time that he became ill. His pension records state that he suffered chronic diarrhea, disease of the kidneys, and was “unable to hold his water”, or incontinence of urine. He reported for duty sick and was furloughed (on sick leave) many times. He was unfit for duty for 60 days and discharged before his three year term was over, on 9 June 1863, at the age of 29. He received ¾ disability, and received a monthly $12. I’m not sure how early he entered the soldier’s home at Togus Maine, but I know he was there by 1890. Pension # 32974, certification # 91725. In the 1890 and 1900 census he is at Eastern Branch National Home for the Disabled Veterans, Chelsea town, Kennebec, ME. Civil War records indicate he held the rank of Sergeant.2. This is the last will and testament of W. I. Thorn, of 29 Garden Street, Poughkeepsie, New York, to wit: I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Mary Roberts, living with me, at said residence, the whole and every part of my estate, real, personal and mixed, and hereby appoint her the sole executrix of this last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, the date and place above mentioned.
W. I. Thorn.

(Poughkeepsie Semi-Weekly Eagle, March 12, 1890, p. 5)8. LAWYER THORN'S WILL
All of His Effects Left to "Mary Roberts, the Woman who Lived with Me."
Poughkeepsie, March 14.-- The brief will of the late William I. Thorn, the lawyer, came before Surrogate Dorland this afternoon on the petition of Mary Thorn to have letters of administration granted her. In his will Mr. Thorn, in giving his wife all of his effects, spoke of her as "Mary Roberts, the woman who lived with me." Surrogate Dorland raised the question as to whether Mary Roberts is the widow of the testator. Ex-Surrogate Hufcut, counsel for Mary Thorn, said Mr. Thorn always addressed her through the Post Office as his wife, registered with her at hotels as man and wife, and within three weeks she had been introduced as his wife. Mr. Lewis Baker, an intimate friend of Mr. Thorn, testified; "I know of no marriage ceremony. They traveled together and lived together and were constant companions." After further discussion the will was proved, Mary Thorn's petition was granted and Frank Lown and John Mylod were appointed a committee to make an inventory of the testator's effects. It will take all of the property and more, too, to pay the debts. Mr. Thorn's legal fees the last year of his life amounted to about $25,000, all of which went like the wind. (Sun and New York Press, March 15, 1890, p. 2)9. William I. Thorn's Will.
"MARY THORNS" PETITION.
She Applies to the Surrogate for Letters of Administration — Her Marital Relations with Mr. Thorn Discussed -- In Law She ls His Widow, though They were Never Married — The Surrogate Grants Her Petition — A Committee Appointed to Make an Inventory of Mr. Thorn's Effects.
On Friday Mary Roberts, to whom William I. Thorn gave what property he had by will, petitioned Surrogate Dorland to grant her letters of administration, she being named as executrix in the will, and her petition was signed "Mary Thorn."
Horace Hufcut appeared as her counsel, and James L. Williams appeared as guardian ad litem for William I. and Susan Vincent, the latter between thirteen and fourteen years of age, and the former nineteen years of age.
Lewis Baker was sworn and testified that the will was in Mr. Thorn's hand-writing. He further said that Mr. Thorn and Peter B. Hayt came into his office one day together. Mr. Thorn commenced writing, and when he finished, said to Mr. Hayt, "I have made my will, and I would like to have you and Lew sign it; two good men and true. I'll subscribe it and you witness it for me." Witness and Mr. Hayt did so. Witness added, "I knew nothing of its contents." Mr. Thorn said to wit es, "It is very short, but conveys everything I want." Mr. Baker said to the surrogate, "I never saw it afterwards, and I never witnessed any other will. Mary Roberts named in the will, is the same person who makes the petition to have the will probated." Question (by Mr. Williams) — Do you know of anything to your knowledge of any marital relations of Mr. Thorn, and the petitioner?
A.— I know of no marriage ceremony. They traveled together and lived together, registered at hotels as man and wife, and were constant companions.
"It doesn't make any difference about that," said Mr. Hufcut.
Surrogate Dorland — The petition is made out by Mary Thorn, formerly Mary Roberts.
Mr. Williams — The question might arise whether she is Mr. Thorn's widow or not, but it would make no difference to the infants whom I represent.
Here the surrogate directed Mr. Hayt to read the petitioner's affidavit, which he did, and he also read the will, and identified it as the document he signed.
Mr. Hufcut — There has been considerable said about town about this case, and everything should be made plain here. The property cannot escape the conclusion that in law Mary Roberts is Mr. Thorn's widow. He had addressed her through the post office as Mrs. Thorn, she has been called Mrs. Thorn in places where they have visited, and, although no marriage ceremony has occurred, yet I believe all these facts make out the case that she is his widow. Within three weeks she was introduced as his wife.
Mr. Williams — I don't see how anything practical can be gained by making it a matter of doubt. He gave her his estate, and the estate is liable for his debts.
Mr. Hufcut — He has told people she was his wife, and if she was to be put upon the stand her testimony would support that view of the case.
The Surrogate — Can I issue letters of administration to Mary Thorn when the will gives the estate to Mary Roberts?
Mr. Hufcut — You will have to do such things a great many times when people marry the second time.
Mr. Williams — I suppose as the matter stands it would be proper to issue letters of administration to her as the widow. The only thing that embarrasses me as guardian for the infants is whether, as protecting their interests, I should raise the question as to her being the widow, but I can't see that whether she is or not makes any difference. A creditor might raise the question in an other proceeding.
The Surrogate — Then the question might come up, suppose the estate amounts to $10,000.
Mr. Williams — Then in the absence of any debts she would take it. A short informal discussion followed, after which letters of administration were granted to "Mary Thorn," and the court appointed Frank B. Lown and John Mylod a committee to make an inventory of the testator's effects. (The Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle, March 15, 1890, p. 6)10. THE THORN ESTATE GETS A VERDICT.
$5,000 From An Insurance Company.
Mary Thorn, widow of the late William I. Thorn, as executrix of his estate, brought action against the National Accident Society of New York, in which Mr. Thorn held a policy for $5,000, before Judge Barnard Friday morning. The suit was brought to recover the amount of Mr. Thorn's insurance, as it was alleged that his death was caused by an accident which befell him about a month before he died. The society disputed the claim. Wood & Morscbauser, Lewis Baker and H. D. Hufcut, Esq., appeared for the plaintiff, and Stephen W. Collins and Daniel S. Remsen, of New York, for the defendant. William I. Thorn died on March 1, 1890. On February 18, 1890, he was at Millerton in company with Mr. S. H. Brown on legal business. Driving from Millerton to the railroad station on that evening, Mr. Thorn was thrown out of the buckboard wagon in which he and Mr. Brown were riding. It was very dark, and the wagon ran up on a side hill and was overturned. Mr. Thorn received severe injuries about the head, which it was claimed were the cause of his death, in producing congestion of the brain. John P. Smith, of Millerton, testified to the circumstances of the accident as stated above. Lulu Richardson, colored, employed as a domestic in Sir. Thorn's household, testified that that gentleman was confined to the house for two weeks after the accident. William Schufeldt, the professional nurse who attended Mr. Thorn in his last illness, testified that the patient complained of a severe pain in his head and also on the left side of his body. He had a high fever, and a wet cloth was kept on his head all the time. Other witnesses were examined for the plaintiff and defendant, and the court then allowed the full amount of the claim. (The Poughkeepsie Eagle, April 25, 1891, p. 6)11. Surrogate's court.
An application was made to Surrogate Dorland Monday afternoon asking that Mary Thorn be required to furnish bonds to secure the amount of $5,000 accident insurance taken out by the late Wm. I. Thorn before his death, the whole amount of which has been recently collected. The creditors of the Thorn estate declare that the money should be given to them, while Mary Thorn insists that as she was made the beneficiary of the policy in the late William I. Thorn's will, the money therefore belongs to her absolutely. The surrogate reserved his decision. (The Poughkeepsie Eagle, Sep 29, 1891, p. 6)12. Demanding Bonds from Mary Thorn.
The proceedings instituted to make Mary Thorn give bonds as executrix of the estate of the late William I. Thorn were continued before Surrogate Dorland Tuesday morning. Some proof was taken when the case was adjourned. George W. Lumb has a claim of $500 against the Thorn estate, and he is behind the effort being made to force the executrix to give bonds. It is said that incidentally the question whether Mrs. Thorn was ever married to Wm. I. Thorn will be revived again, although the surogate has substantially decided that she was his wife. (The Poughkeepsie Eagle, Oct. 14, 1891, p. 5)13. At the Surrogate's Office.
At the surrogate's office on Tuesday, the matter of the final accounting of the estate of William I. Thorn came up. The assets proved to be about $2,150. The expenses for the administration of the executrix. Mrs. Mary Thorn, nee Roberts, were about $1,600. The commission of the executrix and attorneys amounted to $415, leaving about $135 to pay the liabilities which amount to about $10,000. Horace D. Hufcut represented the executrix, and several lawyers represented the creditors, each of which will get a nominal allowance. (The Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle, April 26, 1893, p. 8)14. Mrs. May Thorn, aged 67, a widow residing at 72 Medford st. is believed to be the Mary Thorne mentioned in New York dispatches as heir to $20,000, under the will of Ferris S. Thompson, who died in Paris last month and left a large estate. Mrs. Thorn is the widow of William Thorn, formerly a New York lawyer and friend of Mr. Thompson. Mrs. Thorn has resided in this city the past year, previously living in Boston and New York. She has not received official notification of the bequest, but says that Mr. Thompson had promised to lease her money in his will. (The Boston Globe, 17 Mar 1913, p. 6)

Bequest from Husband's Old Friend Comes in Mary Thorn's Day of Need
"Mary Thorn of Malden." to whom the late Fergis S. Thompson, a wealthy New York real estate operator, who died in Paris, left $20,000, is believed to have been found yesterday in the person of Mrs. May Thorn, 72 Medford street, Malden. While Mrs. Thorn has received no notice of the bequest, she feels sure she is the beneficiary for whom the executors of the will are searching. She is 67 years old, and though once wealthy, is now in straitened circumstances and failing health. According to Mrs. Thorn, her husband was once a very prosperous lawyer. His practice was in New York. Thompson, then conducting extensive real estate operations there, retained Thorn to handle all his legal affairs. The two families became good friends. Later, when in some way Thorn's prosperity waned and Mrs. Thorn became a widow, Thompson kept up the friendship and helped her from time to time. "He always told me that when he died he would remember me," said Mrs. Thorn yesterday. "But I never took that seriously or gave it a second thought. But now I guess there is no doubt but that he has made his words good and bequeathed me $20,000. It is a great surprise." Mrs. Thorn lives with the family of George Conner at the Medford street address, where she has a room to herself. Thompson was the grandson of John T. Thompson, founder of the Chase National Bank of New York, and his estate is estimated at $3,000,000. (Boston Herald, March 16, 1913, p. 7)16. Pacific settlement of our present difficulties
Memorial of citizens of Boston, Massachusetts, praying that such measures may be adopted by Congress for the pacific settlement of our present difficulties as will restore tranquillity and peace to our now distracted country. January 28, 1861.
-- Laid upon the table, and ordered to be printed --
To the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress:
The memorial of the subscribers, citizens of Boston, respectfully showeth: That, while sharing in common with their fellow-citizens the general solicitude at the dangers which are now threatening the peace and unity of our country, they desire to give their urgent and emphatic expression of the necessity which seems to exist for mutual conciliation and compromise, and therefore, without discussion as to the merits of the various questions at issue, your memorialists humbly pray that such measures may be speedily adopted by Congress for the pacific settlement of our present difficulties as shall embrace substantially such a plan of compromise as may be deemed expedient to restore tranquillity and peace to our now distracted country.

This battery is very finely equiped, and the appearance of the whole corps indicated that the greatest care had been exercised upon all points connected with the furnishing of the company. Men better fitted for the service to be required of them, or more efficiently prepared, have not been sent from the State of Massachusetts, which rightly boasts of the excellent manner of equipment of all its troops.
The friends of Col. Wilson have presented to him a magnificent thoroughbred Morgan stallion, which cost $500. The horse is of dark bay color, 15 1/2 hands high, and weighs 1000 pounds. On Friday, the animal was sent to the camp at Lynnfield, "fully equipped." Senator Wilson, by his course with regard to the war, has increased the already large circle of his supporters, and he is today one of the most popular men in the State.
Col. Stephenson has now five hundred and fifty men in the State.
Capt. Williams, who is to command the cavalry regiment in camp at Readville, is in town to day. He is said to be a splendid officer. He has visited the regiment of which he will be the Colonel, and was highly pleased with the camp and the appearance of the men. He furthermore examined about 100 horses purchased for the men, and remarked that they were just the right sort of animals for service. (Boston Daily Evening Transcript, Oct. 7, 1861)7. 20. REVERES, June 16.—Philip W. Golliff had been notified by the Selectmen of Revere that he will continue to hold the position of chief engineer of the fire department. . . As reported in the Post, E. H. Loud had asserted his right to the position, and considerable confusion resulted. It has been the practice for the Selectmen in April each year to appoint three engineers, who chose which of the three shall act as chief. This year the engineers held over and in May E. H. Loud and E. G. Paine, two of the engineers, claimed the right to elect the chief for the year. Loud voting, for himself, Paine declared his election. Golliff appealed to the Selectmen and they consulted the legal advisers of the town, who have decided that such election was illegal and that Golliff is entitled to act as chief engineer until the Selectmen appoint a new Board of Engineers. (Boston Post, June 16, 1902, p. 5)
21. ORGANIZED THREE TIMES
Revere Board of Fire Engineers Elects E. G. Paine Chief and Philip G. W. Golliff Clerk.
The Revere board of fire engineers last night elected E. G. Paine chief and Philip G. W. Golliff clerk. This is the third time the board has organized this year. At the first of the year Mr. Golliff was chief and Mr. Paine clerk. Then E. A. Loud, a member of the board, and Mr. Paine held an election at which Mr. Loud was elected chief and Mr. Paine clerk. Golliff refused to abide by this decision, and for a short time the department had two chiefs. A few weeks ago the selectmen dropped Mr. Loud from the board and appointed Robert M. English chief. About three weeks ago Mr. English was appointed chief, but resigned last week, and Joseph A. Solari was appointed on the board. (The Boston Herald, July 23, 1902, p. 4)

23. FIRE CAPTAIN REPRIMANDED
Hoseman Suspended for 30 Days for Fighting at Revere Fire
Capt. George S. Basford, who was temporarily suspended, was reprimanded and restored to his position on hose company 2, and Hoseman Philip G. W. Golliff of the same company last night, was suspended for 30 days without pay by the fire commissioners of Revere, who finished their investigation of the complaint of James F. Delaney that Basford and Golliff engaged in a fist fight at the fire on Tuesday night last, when two summer cottages and a barn on Endicott avenue were destroyed. The testimony of the 11 witnesses heard last night and the day before was that Golliff was turning on the water at the hydrant and that Capt. Basford, impatient at his slowness, came up to remonstrate with him and turned it on himself, whereupon a fight ensued. The work was delayed several minutes until a bystander turned on the water. A noticed was sent out to all the firemen yesterday that any man found intoxicated while on duty would be dismissed at once. (The Sunday Herald, Boston, April 25, 1909, p. 7)

28. SUSPENDS THREE AUTO LICENSES
Revere Fire Official Among Those Affected
Frank A. Goodwin, State Registrar of Motor Vehicles, stated today that he has suspended the license of Lieut Philip G. W. Gollff of the Revere Fire Department. Edwin A. Reed of Lynn and Arthur Lincoln of Medford, for alleged operation of automobiles after drinking intoxicating liquors. Golliff and Lincoln were arraigned in the Lynn Court on that charge, but were discharged. Judge O'Brien, in discharging them, said, "The odor of liquor on a man's breath is not sufficient to convict a man of operating an automobile while under the influence unless he has previously been convicted of drunkeness." Reed was in the Nahant Court on the charge and his case was continued for two months. Registrar Goodwin, in commenting on the cases today, said that "No man has a right to drink intoxicating liquors and then go out onto the highways in a high-powered car and endanger the lives of innocent people." He is survived by two brothers and one sister. (Boston Herald, Nov. 30, 1923, p. 23)
