2. Descendant of Maolchraoibhe' (chief of Craobh, a place-name); the name of an Oriel family who were originally located westward of the upper Bann, but afterwards settled in Clannaboy, where they were followers of the O'Neills. At the beginning of the 17th century they occupied the west side of knockbreda, near belfast, in Co. Down, but the name was even then scattered through Tyrone, Armagh and Antrim. It is still common throughout East Ulster, but generally anglicised Rice, (Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall )
